Help me choose a diamond ring

Globules · 24/01/2026 10:10

I want to treat myself to a diamond ring.

Budget up to £1k.

For third finger of right hand.

Everything I've seen looks like a wedding/engagement ring. I got rid of both those a few years ago and no desire to replace!

The most expensive piece of jewellery I currently own cost me £80, so I really need to be sure I like it before I splurge.

Any pointers for style please?

Well, what do you like?

Modern, sleek, alternative, hand made, gold, platinum, single stone, multiple stones, coloured stone mix, branded, unbranded, second hand, vintage, polished, matte....

Remember the price of gold and silver at present has never been higher, so prices are as high as they've ever been right now.

Tortephant · 24/01/2026 10:16

Go into a few independent jewellers and try some on. You’ll soon get a feel for what suits and the style you like.

when in these stores also look at vintage, there are some excellent finds here.

Uncertain111 · 24/01/2026 10:21

Oh gosh @TwattingDog you’re right about the price of gold and silver. I’ve been looking for a new ring but you (correctly!) pointing it out makes me think twice! (And I’d just found the perfect one 🤯😩)

TwattingDog · 24/01/2026 10:27

If you can afford it @Uncertain111 , now is probably the time to get it - the scrap value will just keep increasing at the moment. If it drops, I can't see it plummeting although I'm no expert!

I've just talked my mum out of selling some of her unworn gold jewellery as its already worth about £500 more than it was before Christmas!

Globules · 24/01/2026 10:30

Prices are high @TwattingDog ? Seriously? Typical.

I like white gold, not yellow.

I'd feel cheated if I spent a fortune on a silver ring.

And I don't know what most of the rest of your list means.

OP posts:
TwattingDog · 24/01/2026 10:34

The list was really around your style, your preferences etc - do you want brand new or second hand? You'll get more for your money seconds hand for example.

Do you like sleek styles - so do you want a solitaire ring or would you like something a bit more fussy / eclectic / unusual?

Is there a period of history with jewellery you prefer such as art deco?

We can post you to lots of unsuitable rings or we can try to find something a bit more your bag!

Globules · 24/01/2026 11:16

Quite happy with second hand.

Solitaire feels like an engagement ring style to me.

I have no clue about jewellery in periods of history.

Thank you @TwattingDog So many varied links.

I like the style of the 1st, 4th and 6th.

Love the graduated style on the 4th.

Love the shoulders on the 6th.

How does it work ordering online when you don't know your size?

I want a Boodles raindance or a bubble ring.

This is the first example on my search https://gardinerbrothers.co.uk/collections/bubble-rings

Do you have anything already that a jewellery could use in a one off design?

You go into a jewellers and get them to measure your finger or buy a gauge. Sorry for the hideous link!

You can download a ring sizer app. Pop your fingers an existing ring on your screen and it tells you what size it is.

bumblebee1000 · 24/01/2026 17:32

I work one day a week with friend who sells second hand jewellery...nobody is buying at present as price of metal has gone bonkers....my own pile of 18ct stuff has gone from 5k to 7k in about 7 months....rainy day fund....buy something second hand and haggle hard...go in with a low offer...offer about 40% of marked price.

Anonmousse · 24/01/2026 17:41

Im a jeweller everyone is right, metal prices have gone absolutely crazy....its an absolute nightmare to try and quote the price for anything new!

I would advise getting platinum over white gold, if you are buying new and want a white/silver metal. Its more hard-wearing, less allergenic because its a purer metal, and keeps its whiteness (as gold in its purest form is yellow, white gold is alloyed to get the silvery colour and is often rhodium plated which can wear off after a period of time)

TwoeightTwoeightTwoOhhhh · 24/01/2026 18:53

This one has potential to be very pretty and sparkly… (could also be horrible if the stones don’t sparkle) and it is a bit over budget but this lot do good returns.

I have a Raindance and this style was the first thing I thought of for OP. I have one with emerald baguettes mixed in with round diamonds in the same kind of style too and love both.

LookingThroughGlass · 24/01/2026 19:07

No specific recommendations but if I had £1k to spend on a ring I would be visiting every antique jewellery shop within a 50 mile radius. Vintage diamond rings are so beautiful and you could get something stunning for £1k. I saw a beautiful one today for £300, but unfortunately I don't have that amount to spend on a ring with no occasion to justify it. I would be looking at Edwardian rings as they're often really delicate and pretty, or Art Deco if I wanted more of a statement piece.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 24/01/2026 19:25

Mined or Lab Gown diamond ?

Offleyhoo · 24/01/2026 19:45

Have you looked at Monica Vinader? I have such a lovely ring from there.

Teakind · 24/01/2026 19:50

Where are you based? Can you get to Hatten Gardens in London or the lanes in Brighton?

I would choose secondhand too to get more for your money.

Get a lab created diamond! They are about 1/4 price of mined diamonds, fully certified and nobody but you will know the difference!

Ooh, lovely. I have my mum's rings and plan to use her diamonds along with a teardrop emerald and an oval sapphire I own. My friend has recommended a local jeweller and I need to make an appointment.
