Just moisture, in a cream

I get quite dry skin on my face. But skin is also very reactive. It turns red with literally anything, so my benchmark is a product has to:

  1. not hurt
  2. stop being red within a few minutes so I can put on makeup
  3. moisturise the skin

That is it, and I did have a holy grail from Avene, but they changed the formula and it stings my skin, especially around my nose and mouth.

Been in Space NK endlessly, we discussed that I shouldn't have 'actives' in the skincare. She picked out a product that she said 'literally does nothing' which we then did laugh about!

But it was a bit painful and redness lasted a while.

I've seen a dermatologist on and off over the years, dx with rocacea which is under control. Its just the sensitivity.

Any ideas, or even, what should I avoid on the packaging? Is alcohol always a no-no, as that is in some Cerave stuff I've been considering......

Mw and my adult dd both have very sensitive skin

Between us we've tried so many products and now stick to:
E45 lotion or Aveeno cream with the blue lid, think it's called something for very dry skin,
I also like cerave ceramides lotion, leaves my skin so soft and smooth, but it does irritate my dd.
Q+A Cica Calming Overnight Mask - I use it both day and night if I have a flare up
La Roche Posay cicaplast baume for emergencies.

Try to avoid products with a lot of actives, perfume, colour etc

I swear by BioOil. I use it as a facial moisturiser and find it gentle and incredibly hydrating. I put it on when my skin is still wet. I hope you find a solution that works for you.

I think I found my holy grail, I have dry, sensitive skin, I picked up hado labo in Superdrug, it’s so moisturising, made a big difference to my skin and glow that been missing for long while.

Which hado labo product did you pick up?

PeonyBulb · 25/01/2026 07:32

My skin is very temperamental

I use this in the morning before make up. I wanted something without SPF as it makes my eyes water a lot. I also get on very well with Boots No 7 Restore and renew and Boots Future renew serum and night cream.

@Howmanyroses
it’s the anti ageing day cream in the jar, I use it for night also.

blondlygoshferatus · 28/01/2026 07:22

Wow lots more replies thanks everyone.

Whoever said Curel was right, at least so far.

Totally free of alcohol, ive used the moisturiser spray and the rejuvenating day cream.

As long as no breakouts in next few weeks, its perfect.

A friend of mine has the most sensitive reactive skin of anyone I've ever known and she swears by weleda skin food.

I have very reactive skin and I like the Welda nourishing baby cream (I'm not sure if it's the Skin Food in a different tube) It works for me, and in the morning my skin is nice and plump.

Boobyslims · 28/01/2026 15:21

Mine goes red when I put any cream on, if I just touch it, but it settles really fast. I have switched shower and face wash to La Roche Posay for the last couple of years and Kiehls moisturiser and it’s al working out very well. I also got soolantra from the gp which seems to calm down a touch of red. I was always very white faced, a solid white/no pink skin, but lately this little angry pink face has been staring back at me. Glad I’m getting in reverse somewhat!

Allseeingallknowing · 28/01/2026 15:25

I’m about to try The Ordinary’s new moisturiser with rice lipids. I like the sound of it being non sticky and non greasy

Do you use any spf?
I find a lot of them sting my eyes too, but I do want to use factor 50 daily, as we are told!

I will never understand why Weleda Skin Food gets recommended for reactive, sensitive skin. I cant even use it on my hands, let alone my face. Harsh, horrible, overscented stuff that doesn't even moisturise very well.

I have rosacea and dry sensitive reactive skin and really like Vanicream, QV cream.the Ordinary hyaluronic acid cream, the Inkey List Ceramidin cream. Whichever one you use apply a hyaluronic acid serum first in damp skin then seal in with moisturiser. I also like the Curel moisturising spray. When my skin is super dry I put a bit of jojoba oil on it but this can cause closed comedones on me if I'm not careful. Oh the joys of skin that just won't behave!

I have an LED mask that does red and near infrared light and it has been amazing for keeping my skin calm. Mine is a dermalux flex which was £2k. Worth every penny to me but I know there are much cheaper ones out there

Yes, I have the dermalux flex too! I was hoping to be able to use it on other parts of my body too, but its a bad design with the bar all along the back of the stand.

I have considered getting the Dermaflex, but it is so expensive. Brilliant reviews. There is also an LED panel, not so expensive. Just don’t want to buy and regret it.

@blondlygoshferatus

Have you compared the ingredient lists of the old and new formulas from your trusted Avene brand cream? That would be a good place to start - if they have added something that your skin is reacting to, then you know to avoid that in other formulas.

And no, all ingredients listed as alcohols in skincare are not bad. Fatty alcohols (cetyl, stearyl, cetearyl) are skin conditioning, non-drying and support the skin barrier. You WANT fatty alcohols. They have a misleading name but they are not the same as alcohols like ethanol.

Thanks, no i cant find a tube of the old stuff to compare, nor details online.
Interesting about the alcohol too.

Yes there are other panels available, I looked into a cheaper one.... I was sent this comparison below one called Mito Light:-

The Flex MD (dermalux) is ideal if you are looking for a full-coverage, medical-grade system with clinical backing and strong results across a wide range of skin and health concerns. The Mito Light Expert 4.0 is a good lower-cost alternative for more targeted areas and home use, offering excellent flexibility and smart features, but with less coverage and no medical certification.

What was the product name?

Another problem, I can't remember exactly. I can recall the shape of the container and colours.. I think it was a tolerance one, but can't remember!
