Just moisture, in a cream

I get quite dry skin on my face. But skin is also very reactive. It turns red with literally anything, so my benchmark is a product has to:

  1. not hurt
  2. stop being red within a few minutes so I can put on makeup
  3. moisturise the skin

That is it, and I did have a holy grail from Avene, but they changed the formula and it stings my skin, especially around my nose and mouth.

Been in Space NK endlessly, we discussed that I shouldn't have 'actives' in the skincare. She picked out a product that she said 'literally does nothing' which we then did laugh about!

But it was a bit painful and redness lasted a while.

I've seen a dermatologist on and off over the years, dx with rocacea which is under control. Its just the sensitivity.

Any ideas, or even, what should I avoid on the packaging? Is alcohol always a no-no, as that is in some Cerave stuff I've been considering......

weleda (and other natural brands) contain a lot of ingredients that are known potential allergens.

I like the light skin food at night, but it contains lanolin and limonene, which I know not everyone can tolerate. and it's quite greasy.

Passthecake30 · 23/01/2026 06:52

I can only use Clinique on my face, they do a 100 hours moisturiser which is fab. Dd with excema uses a cetraben facial cream which doesn’t flare up her excema.

Whowhatwerewolf · 23/01/2026 07:09

I will never understand why Weleda Skin Food gets recommended for reactive, sensitive skin. I cant even use it on my hands, let alone my face. Harsh, horrible, overscented stuff that doesn't even moisturise very well.

I have rosacea and dry sensitive reactive skin and really like Vanicream, QV cream.the Ordinary hyaluronic acid cream, the Inkey List Ceramidin cream. Whichever one you use apply a hyaluronic acid serum first in damp skin then seal in with moisturiser. I also like the Curel moisturising spray. When my skin is super dry I put a bit of jojoba oil on it but this can cause closed comedones on me if I'm not careful. Oh the joys of skin that just won't behave!

I have an LED mask that does red and near infrared light and it has been amazing for keeping my skin calm. Mine is a dermalux flex which was £2k. Worth every penny to me but I know there are much cheaper ones out there

My sister has this issue and I think over the years has tried a lot of products. She also can't use LRP or Avene even tho they are marketed towards sensitive skin.

I think that there are 2 types of alcohol to look out for , the denat/ethanol which are drying, they evaporate fast so dry down quickly which can be great if you have oilier skin or are going to put on make-up, but they can sting if you have sensitive skin, then there's cetearyl which shouldn't sting, it's barrier friendly etc.

Anyway she loves A-Derma, some pharmacies sell it but u can order it online (it's French). I think she also does like weleda skin food (she has dry skin) but it depends on if you have an issue with essential oils. A-derma is really good tho!

PilatesAndLattes · 23/01/2026 07:58

Avene Cilcalfate saved my super sensitive skin! I would also recommend washing your face with baby bath wash (pH neutral) and starting to supplement omega 3.

Have a look at Victoria Health’s Fulvic Face Cream

I'm thirding Face Facts! Ime, the most soothing and effective product is the body moisturiser - it's a creamy lotion, very good for the face. And cheap.

I think you're making a mistake in looking at higher-end ranges; they're all going to have some supposedly magic ingredients, which makes them unpredictable.

Worth looking at Pond's and Nivea, too, I feel. Both been going for generations and still produce the original formulas as well as updated versions.

If this type of product doesn't turn out well for you, you're only losing a fiver or so.

Cetyl alcohol is a soft wax, by the way, it's emollient and not drying. If it were to irritate your skin, it would be due to impurities or the other ingredients - like ceramides, it's chemically similar to the natural waxes produced by healthy skin.

Which Face Facts range is the body moisturiser from? I don’t think I’ve seen one in the ceramides range but I saw one in one of the other ranges.

I’ve also tried their menopause skin range - the serum is good!

BTW have you tried any of their makeup? The bronze drops are bloody brilliant - better than the Drunk Elephant Bronzidrops and I’ve now switched to the face facts one from my Chanel bronzer.

also, their lip stains are exactly the same as WonderSkin lip stains but £2-3. I have a few and they last the same amount of time as the more expensive one.

OvernightBloats · 23/01/2026 08:16

No, no, no to Weleda! That Skin Food cream smells heavenly but is the devil for sensitive skin. My skin became redder and redder using that stuff.

My two recommendations for extremely sensitive, reactive skin are:
La Roche Posay Cicaplast Baume B5
La Roche Posay Lipikar Baume AP+M which can be used on body and face.
Both are soothing, moisturising, protect the skin's barrier and no stinging!

It's this one: Face Facts Ceramide Moisturising Body Lotion

I haven't tried the others you mentioned - but I will! Thanks.

How about Waitrose Pure moisturiser? Reasonably priced and lovely on the skin.

augustusglupe · 23/01/2026 08:35

I use the really big tubs of E45 cream, with the dispenser as I have very dry skin post menopause.
Also, Cerave spf 50 cream, specifically for face. It’s lovely and I find make up goes on fine over that. Haven’t looked at ingredient's but they both suit me.

MintLindt · 23/01/2026 08:55

I have skin the same as yours and my dermatologist recommended Physiogel cream - the calming relief one in the white and red tube. It’s really moisturising and leaves my skin feeling really soft and comfortable with no redness. I’ll be gutted if they ever discontinue it.

Tallestone · 23/01/2026 08:58

I use the blue Nivea on my very dry skin.

Uhohhouse · 23/01/2026 08:58

I have rosacea and ultra reactive skin and weleda skin food is my HG. Works really well for me

deeahgwitch · 23/01/2026 09:10

Have you tried any Elave products @blondlygoshferatus ?

PeoniesAreMyFavouriteFlowers · 23/01/2026 16:17

Cerave?

DeclineandFall · 23/01/2026 16:26

I’d second Tropic skin releaf. Everything was setting me off- the most basic moisturiser and this was recommended somewhere and it’s magic. Pricey though I think for what you get. It’s the only tropic thing I have. I can now use an Inkey moisturiser so their one that someone recommended up thread might be worth a shout.

upstairsdownstairscardboardbox · 23/01/2026 16:34

The basic beige Aveeno is the best for me. It so soothing.

Motnight · 23/01/2026 18:02

Never heard of Face Facts so thank you to the posters recommending them!

SisterMaryLuke · 23/01/2026 18:52

Also never heard of Face Facts - shall take a look. I have been using Eucerin Urea moisturiser on my sensitive skin, but annoyingly, they have discontinued it very recently. They still do the one for Very Dry Skin, but this is too rich for me. Anything with shea butter brings me out in spots. After trialling several moisturisers over the last few weeks - Byoma, The Ordinary, Cetaphil - none of which were suitable, I am currently using Simple Hydrating Light moisturiser. It is reasonable - doesn't make my eyes sting and am not getting any more spots. They do a rich version for drier skin.

I hear a lot of love for Weleda Skin Food for sensitive skin.

If you're not vegetarian/vegan then my sister swears by Fat Cow skincare (horrible name but apparently great products.) She has eczema on her face so has to be really careful with products and the moisturiser is just beef tallow, beeswax and shea butter.

It is great - I use the light one.

Whattodo541289 · 24/01/2026 00:36

This sounds like my skin. Iv tried the viral cica plast or whatever its called and it did nothing for me. Iv tried about everything and nothing doesnt sting/works except - vaseline. I hate the texture of vaseline as its quite sticky so I use QV ointment which is basically vaseline but less sticky. I go to bed with a thick layer on my face. When my skin is super dry I lightly dab on my face in the morning and put make up on top. I need to watch that I dont rub my face on a jacket collar etc as it will come off easier but it never runs of my face as iv got dry skin! Tubes of aquaphor or the stick are also great when travelling.

isitmytime · 24/01/2026 01:40

Snail mucin or cerave moisturiser in the squeeze tube.
i have sensitive skin, when I touch it it goes bright red and blotchy. The above works for me and no more tight/dry/sore skin

catsmother · 24/01/2026 04:34

My skin has reacted very well recently to the Centella Barrier Cream from Erborian. It's quite thick but feels very soothing on application and my skin feels lovely and soft for hours afterwards - to the extent I keep patting my cheeks because they feel so nice. There's no irritation at all. They also do a centella serum which I use beforehand ... the combination really does reduce redness, as it claims. Whether this would be a good base for makeup or not I'm afraid I can't say as I very rarely wear fondation. However, in the past I've also used the Erborian Red Correct CC cream and was very impressed with that too as it blended in well enough to make my skin look much less red (but not green!).
