Just moisture, in a cream

I get quite dry skin on my face. But skin is also very reactive. It turns red with literally anything, so my benchmark is a product has to:

  1. not hurt
  2. stop being red within a few minutes so I can put on makeup
  3. moisturise the skin

That is it, and I did have a holy grail from Avene, but they changed the formula and it stings my skin, especially around my nose and mouth.

Been in Space NK endlessly, we discussed that I shouldn't have 'actives' in the skincare. She picked out a product that she said 'literally does nothing' which we then did laugh about!

But it was a bit painful and redness lasted a while.

I've seen a dermatologist on and off over the years, dx with rocacea which is under control. Its just the sensitivity.

Any ideas, or even, what should I avoid on the packaging? Is alcohol always a no-no, as that is in some Cerave stuff I've been considering......

I really like Byoma products. The blue serum is very moisturising. Also the SPF moisturiser is good.

Roche posay sensitive range (it’s called something in French)

I have pure Shea butter no additives but it’s very greasy

I had a look on the Skin Rocks app and the following suggestions came up for sensitive skin. Hopefully the link will work, but photos attached just in case.

There are a number of products on the C list, which are deemed suitable for people going through chemotherapy, which can make skin very delicate and reactive. Have a look at some of those and see if anything will help you.

I have eczema on my face and am sensitive to certain things (but not to some things that most people that do have sensitive skin react to!) I have been using cetaphil moisturising cream for the last 18 months. I buy the big tub of it and it's great as I can use it all over my face and body. It's pretty thick, but sinks in well and doesn't leave me feeling greasy. I do have to apply it 2-4 times a day as my skin is so dry at the moment. In the summer though I only needed to apply it once or twice a day. I did use cerave moisturising cream before that and it was good for a while, but then I started to react to something in that.

Aveeno

Please look up the Face Facts ceramide range online. My son has very sensitive skin which was sore and painful after using even very basic stuff and things targeted at sensitive skins. I came across this range by accident but it’s amazing and when I checked all the ingredients on icidecoder I was really impressed.

its super cheap stuff at £2-4 per item - you can buy it in Tesco, Morrisons, savers, often Home Bargains and places like that.

in particular the serum and moisturiser are fab, plus the cleanser.

This range is packed full of lovely ingredients and skin barrier protecting ceramides and basically should cost a lot more than it does.

if you google it or do a search on Reddit you’ll find loads of other folk saying the same.

it has been way better for my son than cerave, Aveeno etc and even as a committed skincare junkie, I’ve switched to this range myself.

Tropic Skin Re-leaf. Really sorted out my redness

Nanda66 · 22/01/2026 22:09

The Inkey List Omega Water Cream. Very light but very moisturising.

Aveeno Calm & Restore Oat Gel moisturiser - I’m 65 and wish I’d discovered it years ago!

I came in to say this - it's very cheap and available via Amazon.

Tdcp · 22/01/2026 23:09

Moogoo do some lovely moisturisers. Aveeno dermexa is also very good.

I'm with you on that, it's fab stuff. Packed full of ceramides if I recall, and specifically focuses on repairing the skin barrier. Ridiculously cheap too at 1.80 in savers! It's a little heavy, in that you have to wait five minutes or so to ' sink in', but once it does it leaves your skin lovely and hydrated without being greasy. I have ridiculously sensitive skin too, with rosacea and it doesn't make it flare up.

NOT Weleda, it’s full of essential oils which gave me perioral dermatitis. I think it would really set sensitive skin off.

Avoid like the plague!!

I have the same skin,I use -

Clinique dramatically different moisturiser

Aveeno

Cerave lotion is nicer then the cream IME

Clinique night masque - fantastic stuff.

Frettle · 23/01/2026 00:12

I honestly think you may be best off with plain hyaluronic acid.

ZeppelinTits · 23/01/2026 00:21

I use Weleda almond face lotion (I have similar skin to you) and it’s good and doesn’t upset my skin. Less keen on skin food. I tried Elemis marine cream and my whole face went red and stinging like it was scalded, it was horrible. Felt like it was burning.
E45 lotion isn’t natural but my skin quite liked it.

justlonelystars · 23/01/2026 03:55

Your skin sounds very similar to mine. I break out and get red from most of the products listed here. My holy grail is Lush Vanishing Cream. It’s entirely natural, gentle, very moisturising. Couldn’t survive without it.

LakeFlyPie · 23/01/2026 04:07

Cetaphil moisturising lotion is gentle but moisturising enough for my sensitive face

I've just started using Moogoo and love it!

I'm thirding Face Facts! Ime, the most soothing and effective product is the body moisturiser - it's a creamy lotion, very good for the face. And cheap.

I think you're making a mistake in looking at higher-end ranges; they're all going to have some supposedly magic ingredients, which makes them unpredictable.

Worth looking at Pond's and Nivea, too, I feel. Both been going for generations and still produce the original formulas as well as updated versions.

If this type of product doesn't turn out well for you, you're only losing a fiver or so.

Cetyl alcohol is a soft wax, by the way, it's emollient and not drying. If it were to irritate your skin, it would be due to impurities or the other ingredients - like ceramides, it's chemically similar to the natural waxes produced by healthy skin.

Agree. Some of the best basic moisturisers I've ever had have been cheap as chips. No fancy actives, just bland emollients.

BatshitCrazyWoman · 23/01/2026 06:11

During chemo, the only thing I could use on my face was the Pure range from Waitrose.

NeedANewOne25 · 23/01/2026 06:21

I use Dermatica at the moment, but when I have had sensitivity issues in the past Avene products have really helped

Embryolisse Lait-Crème Concentré is wonderful for this. It’s so gentle it can be used on baby skin but still does a great job for me.

Genevieva · 23/01/2026 06:37

I love Liz Earle light cream, but it started making my skin worse last summer. I learnt it draws moisture from deeper layers of skin, so can dry it out. I started using pure argan oil and my skin got better, so that’s what I use before bed now. No nasty chemicals to react to.
