The Hush Alexa harems used to be the perfect travelling trouser, had so many pairs over the years. Sadly, the quality of them went hugely downhill - much thinner material and a different cut - so I had to give in. Still look for the perfect replacement.

I bought a few pairs of linen blend trouser with elastic waist from h and m. They are comfy, reasonably priced and not boiling to use in Asia still.

i also have finisterre thermal baggy leggings to wear this end if too cold before in airport. So I might wear those half way and change at layover airport to thinner type

I was looking at these today in store! Gorgeous, comfy and so flattering!

(in looking for something else and didn’t buy them. I’ll probably regret it!)

I have the shorter version of these from years ago - they don't drag on the toilet floor so a bit better. I think you'd have to wear them with thick socks though to keep warm on the flight. I take mine on long haul holidays and wear them with flip flops. Also waistband is better than leggings - I bloat terribly on flights and find that even legging waistbands get uncomfortable.

I am flying long haul soon and plan on wearing the Me and Em palazzo pants linked above. I’ve also got a navy pair from Me and Em that are much looser, have a wide elastic waist and pockets which I may wear instead. To those saying what about the toilet floor-I probably go to the toilet twice in the flight and just pull the trousers up to my knees when I’m sitting on the toilet-easy! I’d rather wear nice trousers and be inconvenienced when I’m in the loo two or three times.

Sorry to be technical, as I would prefer to wear trousers like this but how do you do this. If you do it before you pull the waistband down, they'll just fall down again because you're standing up at that point. If you do it after sitting down on the loo, with your trousers down, they're already on the floor by then and its too late for salvation.

I regularly fly long haul and personally favour a loose elasticated cotton trouser with pockets and cuffed bottom (think yoga style pants) or cotton rich leggings with pockets. The leggings are best for plane toilets despite me flying premium.... I say cotton too as nobody needs a sweaty crotch area after a 9hr flight! Favour a dark colour incase of spillages but also once saw a lady in beige trousers getting off a plane who obviously had a sweaty bum crack..... I'd be devastated if that was me!

FestiveDiscoBall · 20/01/2026 15:57

For me it's always Lululemon leggings, I find the supremely comfy and easiest to wear. And then get changed at the destination into something smarter.

I'd also recommend a yoga bra/bralette for similar comfort reasons.

My trusty hush harem joggers.
Every single photo of me travelling and I’m in those trousers 😀

Any elasticated waist, jersey style wide leg trousers ….super comfy and smartish too x

I disagree. Wear cuffed leg bottoms. Airplane loo floors get nasty during flights. Don’t wear wide bottomed trousers that will touch the floor when you go to the toilet.

Hard agree on the cuffed bottoms!

Pushmepullu · 20/01/2026 18:08

People often suggest loose wide legged trousers for long haul flights but ime they will drop to the floor when you go to the toilet, and trust me that floor will be wet! Either a longish loose dress or leggings are better.

thedogdaysareover51 · 20/01/2026 18:22

@soupyspoon you do it like this-
Enter the toilet and lock the door.
Stand with your back very close to the toilet.
Pull the bottom of your trousers up to your knees.
Very important point-squeeze your knees together to stop the wide trousers falling down again.
Unzip or pull the trousers down to mid thigh while keeping your knees squeezed together.
Sit down.
Open your legs slightly while holding your trousers with one hand and pee.
Wipe.
Squeeze knees together to hold trousers while standing up.
Zip up.
Wash hands while squeezing knees.
Leave the toilet and let your trousers swish to your ankles.

Got it. I like a woman who can go through these sorts of technicalities, Im like this!!

I have wide leg lounge pants on now, Im going to try this on my next trip to the loo

ChesterDrawz · 20/01/2026 18:44

Given that no one, absolutely no one, will GAF what you're wearing, I wouldn't (and don't) entertain wearing anything even slightly impractical for long flights.

Some simple, cuff-bottomed joggers would be fine.

MrsLizzieDarcy · 20/01/2026 18:50

Sweaty Betty Gaia yoga pants. I practically run upstairs when I get home to put mine on with a sweatshirt, they're so comfy but I would suggest sizing up if you don't want them snug.

Espresso1 · 20/01/2026 18:50

I always wear natural fibres- cotton or merino wool on the plane. If there is any sort of plane accident involving fire and you are wearing synthetics (like a lot of the recommendations above), your clothes will melt and burn onto your skin!
I think about plane crashes and lot though, and I fly alot! Definitely nothing longer than your ankle because of the toilet floor, and natural fibres..

Espresso1 · 20/01/2026 18:51

And as soon as you land in the Thai airport you will want to rip your trousers off and put on the lightest, floatiest pair of shorts you can find. Carry these in your hand luggage. With flip flops.

I don’t suck the bottoms of my trousers afterwards though 😉x

@Kevinbaconsrealwifeagree! I wouldn’t freak if my trousers went on the toilet floor. They are dark and I don’t eat my dinner from the bottom of them. Although maybe as I work in a hospital I’m not grossed out by germs or body fluids 😂

Arent you worried about the filth being spread across your shoes?

I remember a horrendous bus station toilet in northern Spain once, my wide legged chinos got wet on the bottom and dragged on my suede shoes

Horrendous, they were brand new and Im very very fussy and particular about my shoes, I keep them pristine. Full of piss they were and that was the start of a nice day out.

Very upset

thedogdaysareover51 · 20/01/2026 19:24

@soupyspoon no not really. I walk about outside with shoes on too. I would just clean any visible marks.

I dont mind stuff that can be wiped off, but urine, mens urine, ugh.

That was the lightbulb moment for me about loose wide legged trousers and not checking properly, but mind you, often these toilets are veyr very dark, no proper lighting so you cant even see

Twilightstarbright · 20/01/2026 19:44

Another one who uses Sweaty Betty power leggings.

We go to Thailand frequently. My go to is an empire line maxi dress with the leggings underneath and a cardigan or hoodie. I also love the Uniqlo ultra light down coat that packs away into its own tiny bag. Close to landing I lose the leggings and cardi and I’m in a dress. Empire line is much more comfortable for the inevitable plane bloating.

ittakes2 · 20/01/2026 19:51

These are not cheap but they are so comfortable and hard wearing. I wear them on 17hr flights from uk to Oz. They don’t look stretchy but they are. The pockets aren’t obvious but they are deep and you can put your phone in them, plus when you are going into airport toilet you can just grab them and pull up to avoid floor as material is stretchy.
