Redhead but maybe now not a redhead? Help!!

Twoshoesnewshoes · 04/01/2026 11:19

I have been natural copper/strawberry blonde all my life.
i have just hit fifty and i think my hair has changed colour!
it seems to be growing through mousy brown 😥
all at once, not different strands. About an inch so far.
i am very upset and also have so many questions.
if I have brown hair, am I no longer a redhead? Has my mutant gene unmatutated? Will I still make my own vitamin D, and burn indoors in winter? Or am I now a brunette? OMG will I tan??!
so many questions and so confused and sad - please help.

Mine is doing similar. Was bright ginger as a child and into my 20’s, now late 30’s and I think it barely looks ginger anymore 😭 I’d be interested if anyone knows why.

WhyamIinahandcartandwherearewegoing · 04/01/2026 11:26

Same!! Was auburn, now a menopausally dull brown -
hoping when the colour goes its proper white and not grey, jnitial
signs would suggest this might be the case, in which case I’ll roll with it!!

applegingermint · 04/01/2026 11:28

Very normal for red hair to essentially fade with age, as red hair rarely greys. You can either embrace it, get lowlights or go full Mary Portas.

Twoshoesnewshoes · 04/01/2026 11:30

Oh it’s good not to be alone.
@WhyamIinahandcartandwherearewegoing that’s my question/worry too - will I now go grey?
im going to try colour infused shampoo.
is anyone else sad? I love being a natural redhead.

Yes it makes me really sad too, except it’s happening in my 30s. I use natural henna which helps to brighten it.

if only getting a tan was a compensation for the red fading!

ThatPeachSwan · 04/01/2026 11:33

Or could you try a hair glaze, or I use henna to enhance? The burning indoors part of your post made me laugh - relatable!

WhyamIinahandcartandwherearewegoing · 04/01/2026 11:34

Aveda used to do Madder Root conditioner which was really good for a boost of colour but I think discontinued now 😓

I did henna for ages but it’s a ballache. And the grey/white hairs go a bit too orange…

RoseDog · 04/01/2026 15:07

Mine is/was strawberry blond but is going white/blond the front is going really light, it’s not coming in evenly from the roots just loads of random strands. I’ve never dyed my hair and don’t want to as I’d never get my natural colour, I’m also quite enjoying seeing it change!

bombastix · 04/01/2026 15:10

As someone with auburn hair that has definitely faded this has helped. It can be drying so you need a good conditioner.

I was a real redhead, a bright copper red. I’m now pure snow white, it never went grey just pure white. I love it.

ProseccoandPizza · 04/01/2026 15:30

Pregnancy changed my hair colour, I spent best part of a decade dying it red until the upkeep became ridiculous. In 2021I decided on highlights and embraced my natural root colour and have a full head of highlights leaving natural roots for a root smudge effect.

amibeingaknob · 04/01/2026 15:32

Oh I thought it just went lighter - no? Id be royally pissed off if mine goes darker. My redheaded mums (74) has just gone a gorgeous light strawberry blonde (from deep auburn) - its lush. Mine is the same colour so I am looking forward to the change when it happens. Ill be miffed it is goes darker though.

Slimtoddy · 04/01/2026 15:36

My mother had red hair but I never knew her with red hair. At some point in her 30s or 40s it changed to brown. The plus side is she never went grey. I luckily seem to have her gene as have very little grey hair. My hair has always changed colour from blonde to strawberry blonde to mousy blonde back to strawberry blonde.

GreenGodiva · 04/01/2026 15:37

Fellow Red head here. I’m46 and my hair was the most beautiful colour as a child and is very much fading out. I find that using red henna really makes it pop and fades slowly to minimise regrowth lines also makes natural highlights and greys pop.

turkeyboots · 04/01/2026 15:39

Mine went browny in my 30s and has since lightened up with white hair in my late 40s. Im almost a strawberry blonde/grey now!

DaisyDazee · 04/01/2026 15:55

My cousin was very fair/almost blond until pregnancy aged 28. The mousey. But has gone a nice even grey in older years.

Mine’s completely white on top! Still a muted red underneath though. People think a hairdresser has done it 😁.

SocksAndTheCity · 04/01/2026 16:05

Mine did it too - I have no or very few grey hairs at 53 bar a scattering in my eyebrows, but my auburn hair is now more of a warm, sandy light brown colour (which is OK, but not what I want).

I use Maria Nila Colour Refresh in Bright Copper and definitely recommend it Smile

mostlydrinkstea · 04/01/2026 16:09

I was red until my fifties when it began to fade to mouse. I had red and auburn lowlights for years. Now in my sixties I’ve got blondes running through the mouse and white. I suspect that one day I will go white but until then my colourist is my best friend.

SwedishEdith · 04/01/2026 16:25

I don't think a redhead will (can?) go grey as that's, essentially white hair and brown/darker hair mixing and appearing grey. Redheads seem to fade to sandy coloured hair.

I had browny/auburn hair naturally. Mostly white now but when I inspect it in the sunshine, the strands with colour still are the very red ones.

THATnewyearnewmebullshit · 04/01/2026 16:37

My hair has definitely faded and I'm finding more and more white strands. I'm not loving this tbh!

modernminimalist · 04/01/2026 16:44

Same, I’m in my 40s and mine has gone from bright orange to almost brunette

modernminimalist · 04/01/2026 16:47

2017 to now

Has anyone used temporary colours or colour depositing shampoos with sucess on ginger & white hair?
