Redhead but maybe now not a redhead? Help!!

Twoshoesnewshoes · 04/01/2026 11:19

I have been natural copper/strawberry blonde all my life.
i have just hit fifty and i think my hair has changed colour!
it seems to be growing through mousy brown 😥
all at once, not different strands. About an inch so far.
i am very upset and also have so many questions.
if I have brown hair, am I no longer a redhead? Has my mutant gene unmatutated? Will I still make my own vitamin D, and burn indoors in winter? Or am I now a brunette? OMG will I tan??!
so many questions and so confused and sad - please help.

Very normal for red hair to essentially fade with age, as red hair rarely greys. You can either embrace it, get lowlights or go full Mary Portas.

Red hair does ‘grey’ like any hair. All hair loses pigment with age, the white hairs are much less noticeable amongst the red than against darker hair where they give a grey look.
My dark blonde/light warm brown hair has gone darker through my forties and fifties and is now light to mid brown with less red. I have almost no white hairs at all though, it’s as though my pigment has ramped up, so I’m wondering if it will run out and all suddenly go white !

bumphousebump · 04/01/2026 18:20

Mine was bright red as a kid and then strawberry blonde most of my adult life. With natural highlights, never had it died. I’m late 50s now and I’ve been getting the odd white hair but the rest is still strawberry blonde most with streaks. It looks like I spent a lot of money on it!

my big brother had the same colour hair and his had gone very salt and pepper and white by my age.

Nellnor · 05/01/2026 17:57

I am also a redhead and mine is getting lighter as I age, my brothers is getting darker. It's not unusual for it to change. Luckily with yours going darker is you can colour it and it will look beautiful still. Of course you are still a redhead. We are born with the gene, the hair, the skin and all the other associated little things that come with being a redhead.
I colour my hair now to keep it looking how I want it but I'm still a redhead. We always will be

Disturbia81 · 05/01/2026 18:21

Just dye it..

Twoshoesnewshoes · 05/01/2026 18:56

Looks like it’s not unusual.
i will try the shampoos suggested, and remember I am a redhead in my heart ❤️

So I was very clearly one colour when I was born, which changed after kids in my 30s. (Not sure whether the change was due aging or hormones due to pegnancy/birth). Photo is my (completely natural) hair colour now in my 50s, there's a couple of whites in there now as you can see, but not many. What colour would people say I am now, and what colour do you think younger me was?

I'm a 'bronde' but as a child I was much fairer haired but as I hit my 40s and now into 50s my hair is darker, with grey strands at the crown!! I have blonde highlights to cover up the grey!! 🤣 I adore red hair, my Aunt had a gorgeous shade of red hair, and I always wanted to be a red head!!

I use this every other wash https://www.superdrug.com/hair/hair-colourants/wash-in-wash-out/superdrug-colour-effects-copper-gold-734-75ml/p/794725 - to think how much I hated my red hair as a child... 😂

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 05/01/2026 20:08

My DM was a strawberry blonde, that was still very ‘golden’ when she was at least 50, and still a faded sort of gold at 80 - when she fell out with a neighbour who accused her of lying when she said she didn’t dye it!

When she died at 97 it still wasn’t grey, let alone white - just a very faded sort of greyish mouse.

lifeonmars100 · 05/01/2026 20:17

This is so interesting, I was a true brunette, dark brown hair with copper lights, (longed to be blonde and could never see what a lovely colour my hair was). As I have got older it has got much darker, all the copper has gone and the although I have white strands it now looks almost black! Googled it and apparently this can happen with age. My eyebrows and lashes are still jet black though not nearly as lush as in my glory days !

Hallywally · 05/01/2026 21:24

Just get it dyed! 🤷🏻‍♀️

Does this cover whites?

TheCurious0range · 06/01/2026 00:25

I used to use aveda madder root but can't get it anymore, now use infuse my colour shampoo, their conditioner was too obvious a colour deposit for me. I use copper but they also do gold and ruby depending which shade you want. I just it a couple of times a week and people comment on how I'm lucky keeping my red, even my formerly redhead mother! Makes my hair very shiny too

My hair at 57 is still very strawberry blonde. Changed hairdresser, briefly, who was very sceptical that it wasn’t dyed, I only used her the once as I wasn’t sure of her competence after that…. I’ve never dyed my hair.

Ginger hair usually loses its brightness and becomes a sandy blond colour.

This is very similar to my colour but a little lighter, I have auburn hair. I'm in my 50's and have a few whites coming through too.
What colour were you before?

I was white blonde as a child, moving to honey blonde later in life. I identify as blonde, but am often referred to as a redhead by others. I defintely see I have a very warm golden tone to my hair, but I'm always taken aback when people suggest I'm a redhead!

Me too! He’s absolutely brilliant ! I was so sceptical of his power because every single time before him it had been such a crappy cut! He’s changed my entire hair routine 🥰
