What are you doing with the jumpers & tops you wore with skinny jeans?

I’m taking advantage of a bit of new year zeal to tackle my wardrobes. They are currently bulging and, as I go through them, I realise it’s because I currently have both the more cropped, boxy style jumpers that I now wear with my barrel & wide leg jeans as well as the longer, arse covering tops I used to wear with skinnies. I really like some of these jumpers & tops! However, they’re too long to tuck in even partially so I just look as though I’m playing dress up in a bigger person’s clothes if I try and wear them with my current jeans.
Do I put them in an empty suitcase & hang onto them until skinnies inevitably come back in? Or do we think that, by the time that happens, styles will have tweaked in some way so that all of these tops will look dated anyway? (Or, maybe, as I turn 50, I will finally have my long awaited teen growth spurt and finally lose my puppy fat and will no longer be a 5’3” pear shaped they will look wrong anyway!).
I have out about half of them in the charity shop style but I still have half a dozen jumpers and a similar number of long & short sleeved tops which I always felt good in when I wore them. I also hate clothes shopping and rarely find things which I feel suit me so I don’t want to rashly get rid of things and then have to start again. Building up enough tops to wear with wide leg jeans feels as though it has involved a lot of blood, swear & tears and a fair amount of wasted money as I wear something a few times and decide it’s not for me after all.

I haven't worn skinny jeans in ten years and find it ridiculous and wasteful to discard perfectly good clothing for only the most fashionable that season. Stylish does not equal fashion victim.

owlpassport · 03/01/2026 18:35

Ah, you're the kind of arsehole who comes onto fashion threads and calls the OP names though.

OP, I can't quite visualise the tops you mean. I think I must have phased them out a while ago. The only long tops I have now are either oversized shirts or oversized hoodies, and I can make them work with wide legs or leggings. If you're talking about waterfall cardigans or dipped hem vests I think I'd chuck them.

They are not fashion threads, they are style threads. Learn the difference.

Im amazed by this post. Surely people just wear what they want, are comfortable in..does fashion matter to that extent especially when you're no longer a teenager. I lost 10 stone last year, all I bought were skinny jeans. I think the really wide barrell jeans look huge on me and my legs are very slim now. I hate the baggy look. To me now, i think it makes me look bigger than i am. I wear them with whatever I like, what I think looks nice, what is flattering to my shape...some cropped, some long, some mid length. Does it matter? Id rather think i look nice and be comfortable than care im not in fashion. Not one person has said anything negative to me. Can't people just wear what they like?

DrJump · 04/01/2026 05:43

If they are good quality and you have the space keep them. I have recently fitted into some clothes from 20 years ago and I've had quite a few compliments about them.

MayaPinion · 04/01/2026 05:47

Wear with a short skirt and tights. Something like this.

LunaTheCat · 04/01/2026 06:05

Wear over the top dresses with leggings underneath.

RedRiverShore6 · 04/01/2026 06:30

Can't you wear them round the house with joggers or leggings, that what I do with some clothes that are comfy and long but maybe not what I would wear out.

BelleEpoque27 · 04/01/2026 06:37

PrincessofWells · 03/01/2026 12:51

Get rid because when skinnies come back it will be in a different way and your current tops will be dated.

Everything in Hollister would beg to disagree - I keep getting advertised clothes I'm pretty sure I owned in 1998-2003 😂

Gremlins101 · 04/01/2026 06:40

Love my skinnies. I didn't realise they were out of style?

Bumbleebeetree · 04/01/2026 06:43

I thought skinny jeans were coming back in? I'd keep the clothes you like

Floisme · 04/01/2026 06:57

Do people not bother reading threads before posting any more? The op has said she doesn’t like skinny jeans.

Agree about skirts and dresses. I don’t wear minis any more but I do like a big baggy jumper over a narrow fit midi. And I can picture them with pencil skirts which are in the verge of a comeback, I believe.

Pricelessadvice · 04/01/2026 06:58

I still wear skinny jeans. Then again, I don’t follow fashion trends.

SpringIsComingSoonFolks · 04/01/2026 09:19

Wear them with leggings and big chunky boots.

They are both. This thread specifically relates to current trends and fashion, hence my wording which was deliberate. Your last sentence is very rude, would you speak to someone in real life like that?

Darklane · 04/01/2026 11:07

If you can knit, or know someone who can,you can actually unravel jumpers from the bottom, & knit on a new rib ending with the wool off them, to shorten them

Cantonet · 04/01/2026 11:38

I've bought this tuck belt on eBay attached
I've got several v neck cashmere sweaters that are too long & thought this was worth a try. Good quality items I really would store them away safely. They will come back into fashion at some point. I'm currently wearing suede/sheepskin jackets I bought 20 years ago.

What are you doing with the jumpers & tops you wore with skinny jeans?
LeChiffre26 · 04/01/2026 11:41

I know what you mean @TimeTime. I have a beautiful angora big sweater so am definitely hanging onto that. Cashmeres are fine so can be tucked in. I sold several items though on vinted cheaply in the past few months. If you don't love them sell and upgrade.

EatingHealthy · 03/01/2026 16:42

Still wear them with my skinnies because I'm not the kind of arsehole who thinks some arbitrary 'fashion' is a good reason to throw away perfectly good clothing and contribute to the destruction of the planet.

Calling people arseholes because they like a new style of jeans is unreal 😂 people are always going to have old clothes, op is asking what to do with them. Get over yourself.

soccermum10 · 04/01/2026 12:42

I still wear my skinny jeans. I also love maxi skirts with a jumper in winter and boots 🙂

The topic it is in is Style, not fast fashion and trends. Yes I would say to someone in real life that there is a difference between style and fashion. Would you say to someone in real life "You're the kind of arsehole who..." repeating their comment back to them as you did in your first post? If you think saying "Learn the difference between style and fashion" is very rude in a topic about style then I suggest you take a break from the internet and have a lie down with a cold compress or something.

May I direct you to the dictionary? Second definition.

I'm not going to spend my Sunday having a debate on an internet forum. Did you have anything pertinent to add to the thread or are you just here to pick a fight?

style

1. a way of doing something, especially one that is typical of a person, group…

DeftGoldHedgehog · 04/01/2026 17:32

Style is not something you find in a dictionary.

RobertaFirmino · 04/01/2026 22:10

Style is about looking good.
Fashion is about looking 'on trend'.

What looks good isn't always fashionable. Fashionable things don't always look good.

In any case, I don't care if people buy lots of clothes they don't actually need (and need is different to want) as long as they stick their unwanted items on Vinted for people like me to buy.

That’s a good point! I find it hard paying full price since finding Vinted..

Floisme · 05/01/2026 06:31

What looks good is also subjective. It’s not peer reviewed science.
