What are you doing with the jumpers & tops you wore with skinny jeans?

I’m taking advantage of a bit of new year zeal to tackle my wardrobes. They are currently bulging and, as I go through them, I realise it’s because I currently have both the more cropped, boxy style jumpers that I now wear with my barrel & wide leg jeans as well as the longer, arse covering tops I used to wear with skinnies. I really like some of these jumpers & tops! However, they’re too long to tuck in even partially so I just look as though I’m playing dress up in a bigger person’s clothes if I try and wear them with my current jeans.
Do I put them in an empty suitcase & hang onto them until skinnies inevitably come back in? Or do we think that, by the time that happens, styles will have tweaked in some way so that all of these tops will look dated anyway? (Or, maybe, as I turn 50, I will finally have my long awaited teen growth spurt and finally lose my puppy fat and will no longer be a 5’3” pear shaped they will look wrong anyway!).
I have out about half of them in the charity shop style but I still have half a dozen jumpers and a similar number of long & short sleeved tops which I always felt good in when I wore them. I also hate clothes shopping and rarely find things which I feel suit me so I don’t want to rashly get rid of things and then have to start again. Building up enough tops to wear with wide leg jeans feels as though it has involved a lot of blood, swear & tears and a fair amount of wasted money as I wear something a few times and decide it’s not for me after all.

Jeez if you like them just wear them with whatever. Who cares what’s in or not?

chattyness · 03/01/2026 16:09

Still wearing with my skinny jeans , because they haven't gone out of fashion and even if they do I'll still be wearing mine.
I'll never wear barrel legs they're hideous

Floisme · 03/01/2026 16:21

This is all very interesting, but, as @Brightonrockkk has pointed out, the op didn't ask who was still wearing skinny jeans. She asked posters who had moved on from skinny jeans what they had done with jumpers and tops that maybe don't work so well with other shapes.

I hang on to a lot of clothes I've stopped wearing. If it still fits and is still in decent condition, I normally try and figure out whether I'm just bored with it and so might want to come back to it after a break. If it's well made and is likely to be expensive to replace then that's another factor. I've still made some bad decisions but you can't keep everything.

Gertrudetheadelie · 03/01/2026 16:27

Feel free to donate them to charity so that I can buy them! Nowhere seems to sell longer jumpers now I'm stuck scouring the charity shops for a decent bum-coverer!

Whoneedsanamesuggestion · 03/01/2026 16:30

I think skinny jeans are due a comeback! It would make sense in the repeat cycle we seem to be having. Baggy, then bootcut, followed by skinny is how it went in my day iirc!

I'd hang on to the good ones if you have space for them.

TimeTime · 03/01/2026 16:34

I said goodbye to my skinnies with delight! As I said, I’m short & pear shaped so they were never particularly flattering. They served a purpose for several years as we live semi rurally and I had young DC so it was very convenient for me that they - and clothes to go with them (which, for me, always had to be arse covering) - were so convenient to buy. I have kept one pair in a drawer for muddy walks & rainy days and will keep a couple of tops out to wear with those. It’s whether I hang onto the rest of the tops, knowing that I won’t wear them with wide legs & boot cuts which I’m thrilled to be in again (& a couple of pairs of which are older than DC1) and barrel legs which I thought looked ridiculous until I actually tried a pair on & liked them.
Writing the sentence about how a couple of my jeans pre-date DC1 reminded me that there is one top I kept which I still
enjoy wearing but the rest seemed a bit dated. I have never been cool enough or spent enough for clothes to become retro rather than dated! I think I’ll put the tops I was wondering what to do with in a suitcase and then I can get them out in a few months and re-assess.

If you hate skinny jeans, I would just get rid of all your long tops except the couple you use for activities with kids where you want to wear skinnies.

You could sell them if they are in decent condition and use the money to buy more tops to wear with jeans you actually like 😁

EatingHealthy · 03/01/2026 16:42

Still wear them with my skinnies because I'm not the kind of arsehole who thinks some arbitrary 'fashion' is a good reason to throw away perfectly good clothing and contribute to the destruction of the planet.

somanychristmaslights · 03/01/2026 16:47

I still wear my skinnies. I like them. I wasn’t aware I couldn’t wear them currently…. Just wear what you like!!!

cramptramp · 03/01/2026 17:02

I wear my longer jumpers and tops with leggings now.

RedRiverShore6 · 03/01/2026 17:25

I wear long jumpers with straight Levi's, I suppose they aren't to be seen in now, I look ridiculous in barrel legs whatever jumpers I wear with them

ClaudiaWrinklemum · 03/01/2026 17:28

I like long baggy jumpers with wide leg jeans. It’s a vibe. Quite 90s.

TealReader · 03/01/2026 18:18

I wear oversized jumpers with my barrel/straight jeans. Sometimes I wear a white tee under and then pin the jumper so it looks like a half tuck. Or I still have some of the belts that were very in about 15-20 years ago - like a plain elastic band with buckle- I pop them under the jumper and tuck it under. Another person who was delighted to be rid of the skinnies!

RedRiverShore6 · 03/01/2026 18:23

I have never wore skinnies, I am tall with slightly gappy but not that skinny legs with big knees and it emphasises it. straight or wide legs are my jeans of choice.

This.

LittleBitofBread · 03/01/2026 18:26

I wear long jumpers with leggings.

GoodBrew · 03/01/2026 18:26

Why do you have to wait for a style of trouser to "come back in" before you will give yourself permission to wear it? Surely you just wear the tops with some skinny jeans and crack on?

TheCurious0range · 03/01/2026 18:28

fartoomuchtoblerone · 03/01/2026 12:50

I’m wearing mine with leggings while working from home.

This is exactly what I do

BeardedBarley · 03/01/2026 18:32

I put my lovely bum covering jumpers in the clothes bank. They looked a bit daft with trendier bottoms. Plus I’ve lost weight and they made me look somewhat hefty.

Ah, you're the kind of arsehole who comes onto fashion threads and calls the OP names though.

OP, I can't quite visualise the tops you mean. I think I must have phased them out a while ago. The only long tops I have now are either oversized shirts or oversized hoodies, and I can make them work with wide legs or leggings. If you're talking about waterfall cardigans or dipped hem vests I think I'd chuck them.

Daisy62 · 04/01/2026 00:36

I bought a narrow elastic belt which I use to tuck long jumpers under (you can’t see it). Then the jumpers look a more boxy shape and are flattering with wider jeans.

Upthenorth · 03/01/2026 12:11

I didn’t get the no skinnies memo and don’t plan to stop. They’re so practical.

Same. I love my skinny jeans and they make me feel more dressed up for some reason.

This. F*ck what “fashion” dictates, just wear it if you like it. If you like how an outfit looks or makes you feel, why wouldn’t you make the most of that?

Highlighta · 04/01/2026 05:07

I would pack them away for now.

I say this as I was having a sort out and hauled out some things I had packed away. And one of the items I am wearing to death again. I cannot believe that I even thought about parting with it.

But at the time I was in a obsessed decluttering mood and in a different season.

My thought process now, if I am 100% sure I won't wear it or I really don't love it, will never fit again etc or some other valid reason then it will go. If I am unsure, then I hang on to it for a bit longer and reassess again when I am in another frame of mind.

(And longer top half anything is way more difficult to find now )

Monty27 · 04/01/2026 05:29

@TimeTime I think the fleece leggings sounds a good choice. I'm all ears here. I went into smart flares rather than jeans for a while but they didn't really work either.

I'm going to try fleece leggings.
I love my long jumpers too much to sack them off.
