I thought it might he nice to have some company and progress celebration.

I am 39, turning 40 this year and I've had enough of doing my roots every five weeks. Haven't had permanent colour on my hair since the beginning of August and it feels very liberating.

I feel like these next 12 months will be the real transformational seasons!

Bumping this for you .
I'd love to see the grey colour my hair could go , but not quite brave enough to go for it .

2BarbieOrNot2Barbie · 01/01/2026 20:47

I went grey last year! Go for it. I love my hair and get a fair few compliments on it. But most of all I love avoiding the faff around dying every 6 weeks.

2BarbieOrNot2Barbie · 01/01/2026 20:48

Oh and I was 43 when I took the plunge. Have a sort of grey balayage look. But have got noticeably greyer over the last year.

BlooomUnleashed · 01/01/2026 20:51

I just use the lightest l’oréal castings (still checking out other semi permanent brands) I can get and use that to soften the contrast between my original mouse brown and the 70% white.

I’m attempting to treat the white hairs like natural highlights I don’t have to pay a hairdresser for. They only pick up a little of the dye so it’s a pretty translucent effect.

Too lazy to deal with roots.

I did eye up Manic Panic but can’t find a colour I like enough to have a go.

Vicliz24 · 01/01/2026 20:55

I’ve been grey , or silver as I prefer for almost 15 years . Never regretted it for one second. Go for it .

dudsville · 01/01/2026 21:08

I did the same thing, in the year leading up to 40 I let go of hair colour. It was an awkward year, and some people in my life were against it, which I thought was an odd thing to bother saying to someone else, but I carried on. Quite soon after the growing out phase, I started to get lots of positive comments on it looking distinguished. 15 years on, I'm still quite salt and pepper, but largely grey on top, and I love it. Quite soon into this journey though I also hit the straw like texture that's so common in peri, so it took a while to find the products that suit me. But I do love my hair and it feels unique. Good luck with the growing out phase, good stuff awaits!

Like many, I stopped dying my hair during Covid lockdown. It turns out my hair is pure silver & it looks fabulous& is in great condition. Also fabulous is not having to do my roots every 4 weeks.

It is a bit odd as my mother & older sister still dye their hair - up to them. I have no regrets.

I seem to have quite defined sections of dark charcoal, white and then also salt and pepper. The white is sort of natural highlights.

I'm looking forward to seeing how it changes over time!

Me! 37yo and have a fair bit of silvers against my very dark brown hair. I think they look lovely and I did dye them at some point and then realised how awful it would be to maintain so gave up on the idea. I do care for my hair a lot though so it looks nice and healthy xx

Thesheerrelief · 01/01/2026 21:48

I'm 44 and haven't had an all over colour in about two years. I have had a smattering of low lights on occasion. Most of my grey is on top of my head, strangely. The rest of my hair only has a few greys, but like PPs, I was fed up of needing to dye it every 5 weeks.

MayaPinion · 01/01/2026 21:52

I did it during lockdown but my hair wasn’t grey enough and I just looked faded and washed out. I also missed dying my hair - I like playing with cut and colour - so I started dying it again about 2 years ago. I’ll try again in a few more years and hopefully I’ll be able to rock the silver mermaid look by then.

SummerFeverVenice · 01/01/2026 21:54

I’ve been going grey/silver for a few years now. I’ve never dyed my hair to hide grey. Mostly out of laziness and being a cheapskate becsyse I know if I had started to, it would just be harder and harder to stop. Plus I absolutely hate going to hair salons.

TerracottaWorrier · 01/01/2026 23:57

I get my hair highlighted quite light blonde but I'm a natural brunette. At 41 I finally have enough grey to blend my dark roots with the blonde better. I'm so excited to not need to go to the salon so often.

Breltrin · 02/01/2026 00:04

I have to do mine every four weeks because I’m brunette. It's a pain. If you’re blonde you can probably stretch it to six weeks. I feel like leaving mine or cutting it too short makes me look so old.

Sparklesandspandexgallore · 02/01/2026 19:31

Yes I am.
I haven’t dyed my hair for 6 months now. I was dying it myself and having to go lighter. It just wasn’t taking at the front. I felt like the lighter dye was damaging my hair.
I asked my hairdresser and she said in her opinion she wouldn’t dye it as the front is very resistant.
So far I’ve resistant having it dyed at the salon. I am still quite dark in places.
I don’t want to ruin my hair with ammonia. I also don’t want to begin expensive treatments at the salon.
I am keeping up with regular haircuts though.

TheignT · 02/01/2026 19:39

I'm hoping to. I'm in my 70s and tried it a couple of years ago and it was really dark grey almost black. Really weird as I was a red head and dark hair made me look really washed out. Definitely lots more light grey and white so hoping it works this time.

Flowertopz · 02/01/2026 20:30

I've been thinking about it for a while now but keep going bk for my highlights . Last lot was done beginning of November so desperately due now but im itching to see what it would look like so im holding out .

NessaCoaches · 02/01/2026 20:35

I stopped dying my hair a year ago due to an allergic reaction. I’m down to my ears now and I love it. It looks like highlights.

PrincessFluffyPants · 02/01/2026 20:42

Can I join? Mid 50's, very dark hair naturally, went and did the whole dying hair blonde/highlights palaver to "blend" the grey hair that started coming through about 5 years ago, but after a good two years of visiting the hairdresser every 5 weeks I have now decided to embrace the grey and my bank balance is already looking happier (not so sure my hairdresser is though!). Will attach a daylight photo for reference tomorrow.

hopeful2026 · 02/01/2026 20:50

I’m 39, 40 in the summer. I decided around 4 months ago that I’m not dying my hair any more and I’m embracing the greys coming.

You sound similar to me, except I haven't stopped dying my hair yet! Can I ask how old you are please?

KittyQuestions34 · 02/01/2026 21:13

Can I join!! I stopped dying my hair in Jan 2025 so am a year into my grow out now. It’s about down to my ears, I’ve done it cold turkey by just getting it chopped every 8 weeks to my ears. Not a haircut I’d choose normally (very short bob) but I’m now at the point I can start to grow it longer. The grow out process is really hard, and there have been many moments where I’ve wanted to dye it. I would recommend the root spray stuff in the first few months, then a colour boosting conditioner (like glaze) to dim the demarcation line, then just leave it and go cold turkey. That is what has more or less worked for me. I still have moments where I hate it and think it makes me look old, but most days I love it and I really love how unique it is. Weirdly, the more it has grown the less white the roots look,
I think because the contrast isn’t as strong between the white and the dye. Here’s me at one year!

I'll join too! I've never dyed my hair in my life so for me it is not about stopping but about trying not to start!

I've really been feeling the urge to cover up the greys as they have multiplied over the last couple of years (I'm 41).

I'll use this thread as motivation to embrace it, the pictures posted look fab!

CharlotteCChapel · 02/01/2026 21:29

I'm 61 and have a silver frame around the face. I am naturally a reddish mouse and where the grey is moving in I have a sort of apricot colour. The rest is still its natural colour . I expect the frame will gradually move further back and I'll go grey

socks1107 · 02/01/2026 21:32

Im 46 and haven’t dyed my hair in 23 years. I’ve actually very little grey but fully intend to embrace it as it comes
