Is anyone else going grey this year?

I thought it might he nice to have some company and progress celebration.

I am 39, turning 40 this year and I've had enough of doing my roots every five weeks. Haven't had permanent colour on my hair since the beginning of August and it feels very liberating.

I feel like these next 12 months will be the real transformational seasons!

Early thirties.
I'm having grey blending done. So growing out my natural grey/silver but with some highlights and toners to blend it all nicely. I'm not actually as grey or silver as I thought I was sadly. I wanted that amazing silver mermaid look!

It's a lot cheaper and less time consuming than getting it done every 2-4 weeks though.
I can stretch it to suit me.

I also use crazy colour for fun colours in my hair for when I'm having a wobble I can change it up but it washes out over time.

Definitely use a purple conditioner to tone down if it's getting brassy. That's the only time when I think mine looks very greying dull is when the grey/silver is next to a very warm brassy blonde. I'm a year into growing it out so I'm slowly losing those warmer colours.

I love my grey hair - grown out during Covid. It is all sorts of colours from pure white to steel grey so looks in a way far more vibrant than the flat colours of dye and highlights and I get complemented on it a lot. My hairdresser did one colour strip, which did involve harsh chemicals and was a bit meh but did get rid of badger stripe. I hope that more women go natural. We need to see women with grey hair in the same way we see men - mature, distinguished and authoritative rather than as old crones

LadyClumber · 03/01/2026 09:46

I tried going grey last year. Unfortunately, my natural grey is flat pewter rather than silver so I looked completely washed out. My natural hair colour is/was medium golden blonde so I now have highlights every 6 to 8 weeks to lift and blend my dull grey streaks.

Clutterhater5 · 03/01/2026 09:52

I think I wouldn't mind the greyness of mine as much if the grey wasn't so wiry and thick compared to the rest of my hair, it really sticks out. If anyone has recommendations on how to fix this or blend it better I would be grateful!

I have been thinking about it. I haven't died it since beginning of Novemver. I'm 42 but don't seem to have a lot if grey at all. I have a couple of strands of white hair scattered about, so unhinged and ahhinh what to do next 🤷‍♀️

Elvive Glycolic Gloss is good for smoothing down grey hairs

littleblackcat1 · 03/01/2026 10:19

I’m usually a terrible procrastinator, but, I feel I need to follow a strong instinct to see me and be my true grey haired self.

I think it might actually suit me. I’m a soft autumn colouring but silver jewellery suits me better.

@KittyQuestions34 yours is gorgeous! I am 51 and nearly a year into growing mine out. I did a T section of blond highlights for years but I have a very silver ‘malin stripe’ at the front that never took the dye and the hair that has been dyed multiple times was just going yellow and in poor condition. I am nearly there with just chopping off the dyed bits as I have a chin length bob.

Thank you so much! Sounds like you’re nearly there - I found it tricky as I’d been lightening mine for years, but because my hair is naturally dark brown I would end up with two lots of roots, dark and grey!! Now it mostly comes across as a dark steel colour, which I do love. I have stripes of white right at the front (as seen in this pic!) that I don’t love as much, as they are quite stark, but as long as I take time to style it properly it doesn’t look too bad. I have treated myself to an airwrap this Christmas which I’m loving so far!!

all the best on your grow out journey! Love this thread - so cool to see everyone’s patterns

Meee!
Glad to see this thread, I'll go back and read now.

I'm 3 months in.

My hair is silver white. I so want to do this.
I had a reaction to dye 4 months ago and just thought I can't do this anymore. My hair in my youth was dark brown.
I've been dyeing it a light brown for yrs.
I'm pushing 60 and want to be me naturally.

Twodogsisbetterthanone · 03/01/2026 10:37

I’m 46 and started moving over to a more natural ash brown last year instead of my usual dark brown so that the greys blend more. I actually really like the greys!

Tcateh · 03/01/2026 10:50

Arghhhhhh. First time taking pics. Indoor and outdoor.
13 weeks.
Meant to be having t section highlights in few weeks but not sure whether to bother.

What a lovely thread! I decided last May to stop getting highlights and toners. My hair was in rubbish condition and was fed up with the amount of money I was spending.

Im really pleased so far, hair is in much better condition. My biggest recommendation is to spend a bit of money on good shampoo/conditioner. I’ve been using purple shampoo and is fabulous.

jjourneys · 03/01/2026 11:05

Me and my mum at 49 and 74 are fed up with £80/£100 every 8 weeks … we are gonna go grey!!

I had a few sessions of getting the T section done as it really helped to get rid of the line. So I’d say go for it.

FourForksSake · 03/01/2026 11:15

Best thing I ever did was to grow out my natural colour. It’s a silvery blond, with dark still underneath at the back. I’ve saved £1000s.

Thanks for the advice 🙂
She said something about toner too but I'm not sure how that works, as doesn't that then cover whatever is left. I don't want anything on the roots.🤔

bleakmidwintering · 03/01/2026 11:17

I went fully grey last year but I was 58. It’s brave to embrace it at 40.

I'm going the other way and thinking of dying mine again! Two years of no dye, it's now silver, quite pretty really, but I dont think it suits my colouring. I was a natural gold blonde and have a warmer skin tone , suit gold jewellery etc so I think I need some warmer tones in my hair.

Totally understand.
I stopped dyeing my hair four years ago (was originally brunette but had 80%-90% white/grey) and had three years of being completely grey/white. Was really happy with it for some time and was convinced I would never go back to colouring it.
However I gradually got fed up with it and started to no longer see "me" when I looked in the mirror. I used purple shampoo to avoid the yellowish tinge my grey hair developed but the brighter silver/grey result clashed with my skin tone etc. I thought long and hard about it and eventually went back to the dye a few weeks ago and am so pleased I did.
One of the best things is that I can now wear so many different clothing colours which just didn't suit me when grey. I only regret that I got rid of so many clothes in recent years that now would suit me again.
Good luck with whatever you decide.

Yay join the silver gang!!
I was doing my own roots at 8 quid every four weeks but getting so fed up with it all.
Then I had a reaction to it.
My mum was silver. She passed away fairly recently and I've been toying with this idea, but to begin with it was just reminding me of her and it was sad.
Now some months on I'm actually liking that similarity that the genes have gifted.

100Roses · 03/01/2026 11:38

I’m 43 and haven’t dyed my hair since August. Got to the point that my roots would be noticeable within 2 weeks of having my hair done and I was having to use a box dye on them in-between my hair appointments. Hated the brassiness of my hair too, didn’t matter how great it looked when I left my hairdresser it just went an awful colour after a couple of washes.

My mums colourist in particular seemed to be increasing in price more and more and I get a scalp psoriasis reaction too, which makes it a bit painful, so we are now in ‘sod it’ mode! Lol but thanks for your reply xx given us motivation! Hehe

lindyloo57 · 03/01/2026 15:58

I stopped having salon bleach highlights in lockdown, and have just been doing the top where the parting is myself, so it's mostly grown out and I am now dark mousey colour hair which is in great condition, but with a few silver grey strands, was hoping I will go white like my older sister, but at 65 I wonder if like my mum I will stay dark with only a few grey silver hairs.

PrincessFluffyPants · 03/01/2026 16:54

Attached a photo, mainly to keep myself accountable. Last coloured with a semi at the end of October for an occasion where I wanted to look glam, but previous to that was making some progress with growing out. My hair is a bit thin due to hormone treatment. I think it will be a salt and pepper grey with some silver at the ears and fringe as that seemed to be how it was going before. Looking forward to seeing everyone's progress and mine.

Completely agree - I recently read that great hair is so aging. Well it wouldn’t be if 75% of women weren’t faking it! I’ve never died my hair and got quite a few greys now, but I’m a redhead so not sure what colour it’ll go. I’m 47.
