Is anyone else going grey this year?

I thought it might he nice to have some company and progress celebration.

I am 39, turning 40 this year and I've had enough of doing my roots every five weeks. Haven't had permanent colour on my hair since the beginning of August and it feels very liberating.

I feel like these next 12 months will be the real transformational seasons!

Some images from today

Still HATE the orange tones but I'm too scared to put a toner through it in case it fucks up the grey again.

How are we all getting on?

@YouBelongWithMe looks nice!

I’m determined not to permanently dye mine again but may use some temp dye while it’s growing out

Your hairdresser is definitely protecting her revenue stream @whataeffingnightmare. That’s so pretty.

Sparklesandspandexgallore · 25/01/2026 11:23

Youbelong I agree that your hair looks lovely.
I would stop dying it as it’s very expensive. Use some of the money on something else which will bring you joy.

Does anyone use purple or blue shampoo? Was thinking it might knock some of the yellow blonde out of my ends as well as brightening the grey. Very tempted by the (constantly advertised) Cornish Seaweed one!

I’ve been grey for nearly 30 years and have used purple shampoo for alternate washes all that time. I must have tried about 20 and they’re much of a muchness.

I stopped colouring my previously very dark hair when I was 40. Im now 53. Lucky for me my natural hair was pure white by then. I cut it REALLY short and got rid of all the colour in 8 weeks. My hair grows really fast. I love it and get compliments all the time. Go for it!

@whataeffingnightmare Although I've gone back to dyeing my hair now, I did have a few years of it being completely white/grey (well, 80%-90%). I used the Aussie purple shampoo around once every three washes, as it is quite drying. It certainly reduced the yellowish tinge my hair had developed. However, the brightened silver colour started to look odd with my warm skin tone, which is one of the reasons I went back to the dye.

Yes I do. I’ve used a few different ones. I like Olaplex purple shampoo, but at the moment I’ve got a L’Oréal Professional purple shampoo with magnesium that’s specifically for grey hair. It was expensive but it’s good and it lasts for ages. I use it every other wash, and it definitely makes a difference and brightens up the colour.

Here's me at 73 with a little tight at the front then some grey but from the back it's still the normal Auburn

I wonder if I will live long enough to have white hair.

YouBelongWithMe · 26/04/2026 23:51

Just updating this. Who else is still in it?!

I am so sick of the warm brown and so ready for the grow out to be done already. I guess that's part of the process though!

It looks like it'll have lots of different tones and different greys which I'm really excited about. I really like the dark grey blocks at the front.

Oh wow, yours has grown so much since January!

My pattern is similar to yours, mostly underneath and in two main stripes down the side of my head a bit back from my face, then just peppered about a bit throughout the rest of my hair. I tend to part my hair to one side which makes the stripe more prominent, which I quite like as it looks more intentional.

I use blue shampoo occasionally to try and reduce the warmth in the dyed bits.

YouBelongWithMe · 27/04/2026 17:41

I am worried the blue shampoo will turn my dyed warm bits green!

It shouldn't do, but you could always test it on an unobtrusive bit.

I was worried it might turn my grey bits blue, but it hasn't yet 😅 I try not to use it too often as it's a bit drying.

I stopped dying my hair a year ago due to an allergic reaction. I’m down to my ears now and I love it. It looks like highlights.

That looks lovely
