Is anyone else going grey this year?

I thought it might he nice to have some company and progress celebration.

I am 39, turning 40 this year and I've had enough of doing my roots every five weeks. Haven't had permanent colour on my hair since the beginning of August and it feels very liberating.

I feel like these next 12 months will be the real transformational seasons!

I have dyed it grey before but it hasn’t been successful because bleaching it light enough left my hair snapping off and if there is even a tiny bit of yellow in the hair- it takes on a green hue as the toner washes out. Toner washes out quickly owing to how porous the hair is. My hair was dyed dark when I tried. That is why I buzzed mine. Where it was growing through where my hair is white was looking like I had bald patches and the line was harsh. So hats it is until it has grown in a bit by which time the spring will be here and I will be through the worst of it! Looking forward to seeing how it grows in and not having to dye my hair every week…

Has anyone dyed their hair silver?
I'm thinking like a silver balyage to not mess with the regrowth and then just letting it grow out? 🤔

That’s what I did. It worked great and really helped as I didn’t have to worry about growing out the grey. I did have a very short haircut though to do it.

tentonnetruck · 11/01/2026 00:52

I’m just over two years going from brown to grey. I had my hair bleached and toned at the start which ruined my hair. Now only the last inch is the left over bleach. The rest is natural. I’d love it to be a white / platinum, but I also don’t mind the colour it is now. It’s fairly even, and I don’t think it makes me look like an old lady. Could be kidding myself, though!

I’m just starting trying this month. It’s dyed a dark browny purple so will be a tough process! Started going grey in my early 30s. Have bought myself some hats…

@MightyGoldBear I was wondering this but my hairdresser advised against it as would need bleach on my hair. I’ve seen videos online of people doing it though.

This is gorgeous, and so even! It looks so intentional.

I am definitely more badger-like. I think it's going to end up mostly salt and pepper for the most part, with very white sections near the temples and then two bizarre very dark money pieces right at the front.

I m 4 months in, my natural hair is so much stronger and conditioned.

I bought a hair topper, which looks great 🤣🤣. My wig!!!

If I can keep it up for another 4 months, I should be able to cut a bob, and then it should be bearable.

I think I might try it and report back. I am already light though so I don't think it would take too much to lift my white blonde hair. Im dark underneath and minimal silver there so i might go for a two tone silver on top with dark underneath. I like intentional alternative looks so Hopefully it works.
could go for a lob to chop off the most damaged ends. Although I find argan oil really helps the condition of my hair so might not be too bad 🤞🏻

I hated mine but had an allergic reaction to hair dye so had a decade of no colour. Mine was very much a salt and pepper dirty grey, my natural hair colour is almost black. My friend on the other hand has actual silver hair and her sister has the brightest white silver hair. I found a hair dye I’m not allergic to towards the end of last year. It’s a water based one so it’s now light brown and as my actual hair is so striped it looks like highlights, no block colour and am delighted with results.

HermioneRuby1 · 12/01/2026 10:34

I’m on my third attempt to do this. The last attempt I had highlights on to try to blend it so it grew in together but they went brassy as I am quite dark. So I coloured it in October with a semi to blur the highlights and go cold turkey. I am very salt and pepper as you can see and also very much swing from one day to the next whether I am going to persevere or not. I do like the freedom of not having to colour my hair and where I have a chunk together I keep telling myself that I won’t know till it’s fully in how it will look and by then I’ll love it 😂

What hair dye did you find if you don’t mind me asking? I am also allergic to the usual dyes unfortunately.

One week from number 2 buzz. Has grown quite a bit already.

Anyone who has a sense what colour clothing is going to work with my particular hue- I would appreciate your input. 🙂

I wear and suit cool toned red lipstick and that really works even more so now my hair is natural. I hardly need any foundation either - which has been a pleasant surprise!

Forgot to add- it looks like it is going to be a streaky salt and pepper when it grows in with some solid white pieces around the front.

Snowqueenie123 · 13/01/2026 11:03

This is what I think my hue/pattern may resemble….

I posted earlier about the grey not suiting me after 2 years of growing out...so I've taken the plunge and gone back to a warm blonde. I look and feel like 'me' again, and my clothes and make up look right. Even OH who notices nothing commented that it looked 'better', without prompting! I do it myself so all done and dusted in an hour at a cost of £10. I can bear this every 6 weeks or so.
Some of the grey posted on here looks fabulous, as does my best friend, but it wasn't for me.

tobee · 15/01/2026 01:38

I had to do this the year before last because of a sudden allergic reaction. I grew it out and added spray hair colour (the root touch up type) until I was ready to go grey - ready that it was grown out enough.

I didn't like not being able to choose to go grey and would have liked to have done it in consultation with my colourist.

I've since found that I am ok with Aveda colour allergy wise and thought of doing some sort of reverse grey blending, highlighting or balayage. But it was such a pain in the bum growing it out originally I don't think I can face it.

People are complimentary about my grey but maybe they are just being nice?

Anyway, I'm keeping my eyebrows dark (I had dark brown hair before). What are others doing with their eyebrows?

I'm 57 btw

I'd have loved to have had that.

YouBelongWithMe · 24/01/2026 13:33

Some images from today

Still HATE the orange tones but I'm too scared to put a toner through it in case it fucks up the grey again.

How are we all getting on?

I tried it and it took ages to grow out as its waist length. It looks ghastly, grey and mouse and is so shiny if I put it in a ponytail the band just falls out.
I looked washed out and ancient. Ive got my running shoes on and Im running back to the hairdressers for a gold blond balyage.

Gettingbysomehow · 24/01/2026 13:39

And I don't care how much it costs.

Sparklesandspandexgallore · 24/01/2026 13:51

Well I’m persevering. I don’t have much grey though. I do have two strips down the front which I’m hoping stay the very light silver colour they are.
My main worry is that the ends of my hair are quite a warm brown as I’ve always used warm toned colours when I’ve dyed my hair. My re growth is more flat/cool and I’m not overwhelmed by that.
However two things I’m baring in mind:

  1. 2 people told me on the same day that they were positive I was younger than I am, and it wasn’t because they felt they had to in anyway.
  2. Dh and I have just book a holiday, so I need to save for that.

I'm 65 and would really like to give up dying my hair. I wish I could upload a photo somewhere to see what I'd look like as a grey. Well, I say grey - when roots come through they are white, and I don't know I could stand plain white hair.

I'd love to save the £100 every six weeks!

I saw a woman yesterday with a pure white plait down her back. It looked so beautiful I had to stop her and tell her. White hair rocks.

PurpleCoo · 24/01/2026 14:54

I'm 50 in a few weeks and really starting to notice some grey hairs starting to sprout through now. They are well and truly in the double digits now. I think the only person to notice them would be my hairdresser though, no one else is likely to be looking that closely at my hair! I tend to just pluck the most visible ones out. I haven't coloured my hair for about 12 years or more, and not planning to start now just because I am beginning to get grey hairs. My hair gets golden highlights in the sun so the grey will be even less noticeable once the sun returns

whataeffingnightmare · 24/01/2026 16:21

Undecided! 3 months since my last blonde highlights, original colour was dark chestnut brown. Just took this so unbrushed hair looking very scruffy, pretty much silver/white towards the front and darker at the back.

Am mid-sixties so I know I will need to pay more attention to grooming eg needing lip gloss/blusher and an occasional introduction to the hair brush if I continue like this.

Hairdresser has suggested keeping up with the highlights but focussed more on the back section and changing colour so it’s between silver and blonde, I’m not sure if she’s protecting her future revenue stream as even T section highlights with a cut is about £160, half or full head even more, just a cut is about £65 so every 6-8 weeks makes a difference

You could absolutely grow this out with very minimal noticeable transition! I love how bright it is ❤️
