Barrel leg jeans

I like them. On others! Bought some and felt they looked like clown trousers! Can anyone suggest some that are less clown like but still slightly cropped and wide?

You do what you like dear. I'm sure you're fine in real life.

I know what I think about posters when they write comments like this…

Nobody has the right to police threads or shutdown others opinions and it happens far too often on S&B.

DaphneduM · 02/01/2026 13:45

I think barrel leg jeans are flattering and have several pairs. All Marks and Spencer - blue denim and a dark green pair which I bought this week in the sale. My stand-out pair are dark grey suede M and S barrel legs - they look flattering and slightly luxurious! I wear them with cashmere jumpers or cardigans. Like others, I like experimenting with different shapes - I wear wide legged, straight legged and barrel legged - different looks with different style tops. I've just bought a sixties style block overlarge sweater for the spring and my M and S Harper jeans and ballet flats look good as a bit of a change.

Fashion is fun and I don't take it seriously - it's about being stylish, not following the crowd necessarily, but feeling good in what you wear. I'm over 70, size 14/16 and have (dreaded on Mumsnet) grey hair! So I definitely have my own style. Deviating slightly, I would add that I definitely didn't look any younger with my (expensively) coloured blonde hair!

Well at least I don't patronise and belittle people, as you appear to enjoy doing.

You have every right to jump on whatever fashion band wagon you want. But the way you , and some other pp on this thread, take such exception to someone expressing a viewpoint which does not conform to yours, is very disturbing.

Because you come onto a thread telling us we all look shit in our favourite jeans.

What is the point unless you're specifically trying to be a dick?

But you do patronise and belittle people. Your comments on this thread saying people look stupid in them, they're silly fools just following fashion trends are patronising and belittling.

You have basically dropped onto the thread to imply that people are sheep and look shit. Clearly you're wrong that nobody really likes them as plenty of us have said we do, either on ourselves or other people.

It's fine to have differences of opinion on what does and doesn't look good. But there are polite ways of expressing it.

DramaAlpaca · 02/01/2026 16:22

I commented above that I like barrel leg jeans on me and have a couple of slightly cropped pairs from Hush. I've just ordered a full length pair from M&S in black, and their jeans usually fit me well, so I'm hopeful I'll like them.

I feel really sorry for all the posters who've spent the Christmas holiday trapped on a thread in which they have no interest.

I love this comment! It made me giggle.

There are some po faced folk on this thread. Thankfully they're counterbalanced by the posters who are having fun with fashion!

do you have a link for the whistles ones? Are they the ‘authentic’ style?

Edited

Yes the authentic ones, my green ones are not on the website any more though. I think mine are a size 28 which the website says is a 10, but I think they come up quite generous, I generally wear an 8 but reckon I could size down toa 26 in these. I'm keeping them though as the colour is fab and I can't find a pair to replace them, so I'll just belt them and wear them oversized with a slim fitting top and try not to look like I've got rickets.

LeChiffre26 · 02/01/2026 19:04

I saw a couple of young lasses with barrels on yesterday and even they looked a bit daft. It made me think of this guy.

They look great on all my young relatives.

Skinnysaluki · 03/01/2026 18:15

But I’m still baffled as to what shoes to wear with them! What shoes do people wear?

I wear with a chunky trainer - don’t have a link as they are very old from TU but have a sort of platform base

thedogdaysareover51 · 03/01/2026 18:58

@SkinnysalukiI just wear socks and trainers during the day and if I want to be smarter I wear pointed ankle boots. I follow missy elz on instagram and she styles barrel leg jeans often and looks really well put together in them.

Marlaysydney12 · 03/01/2026 19:11

I like them. I'm 5"8 and size 14/athletic. I've never got on with skinny jeans. I do find them easier to wear in the summer, with bare ankles, sandals and a closer fitting top. For winter prefer long and straight leg.

Birkenstock Bostons, Adidas bold, Uggs, DM loafers, any number of trainers. In summer chunky sandals, flip flops.

I wear mine with trainers.
I don't think they have to be worn with any particular shoes.

I think maybe mine just end in the wrong place because all my trainers and all my boots look daft with them. Should they end above the ankle? I’m short with short legs and the bottoms of the barrel legs touch my shoes and look daft!

Floisme · 03/01/2026 21:31

I like them to end at the ankle bone - then thick socks and boots in winter obviously

biedrona · 03/01/2026 21:45

I love barrel trousers by Everlane.

evilharpy · 03/01/2026 22:36

I wear mine with all sorts of shoes, but if I wear them with chunky boots I cuff them to the top of the boot. I epecially like them with doc marten shoes, I have the 1461s in both normal and quad soles and both work really well.

CurlyCabbage · 03/01/2026 22:49

I honestly think if you dont like them. You havent found ones that suit you. To look good they have to be shorter than what you’re used to, else they will pool over your shoes too much.

They are excellent for most body shapes, including (the often difficult to style in jeans) short apple shape, as they give balance at the hip compared to the top half.

Age is not a factor. There are content creators of all ages and shapes styling them amazingly.

I will be sad the day they are over as I love them and have never felt so in proportion in my life.

biddybid73 · 04/01/2026 08:20

Another recommendation for those from Whistles. I have them in dark blue and black denim.

Cantonet · 04/01/2026 13:20

I think it's hard to find the right style.
I love the Sienna Miller M&S ones as they're cropped, flowing & seem to suit my body shape. I've just bought a spare pair new off e bay, as my old ones need repairing. The only other ones I can wear are the Uniqlo Baker jeans. I've tried on the latest M&S barrel jeans & they're awful on me. Likewise the Uniqlo barrel reiterations.

Floisme · 04/01/2026 16:56

I agree the term 'barrel leg' covers a lot of quite different shapes but I think that's true of pretty much any style. At the risk of using the 's...y j....s' words and causing another diversion (sorry if I do), I only ever found 2 pairs of skinnies I really liked. (Next Relaxed Skinnies from the early 2000s and Whistles since you ask, and yes, I have kept them.) I'm also struggling to find any wide leg jeans I like this time around which is bizarre as I adore wide leg trousers. There really is no short cut to trying on loads and loads.

TealReader · 04/01/2026 17:12

Floisme I was struggling to find wide leg jeans that weren’t too baggy or too relaxed and finally settled on the Bellerose No 61 jeans. Found them in a local boutique. Fairly pricey but I’ve worn them loads.
