Barrel leg jeans

I like them. On others! Bought some and felt they looked like clown trousers! Can anyone suggest some that are less clown like but still slightly cropped and wide?

Barrel jeans are my favourite. I had the Whistles ones as my entry point, probably from 2018ish - definitely pre Covid - and have graduated to a more exaggerated shape over the years. Currently on heavy rotation I have pairs from Cos, Abercrombie (I have a big arse and like the “curve love” range there), and Albaray. I also have really great barrel trousers in a kind of creamy-yellow colour from Cos that I wore loads over summer but are too light a fabric to wear just now.

I’m 5ft 6, UK size 12, smaller waist, chunky thighs and big bum. I always looked absolutely shit in skinny jeans so am very glad there are lots of different options in the shops now.

(Off topic but possibly useful to someone - I also really like the Abercrombie 90s relaxed jeans (or something along those lines) which are a lovely slouchy cut, kind of a cross between wide leg and straight. A wide straight leg maybe? Abercrombie sizing is kind of odd to figure out, but I wear 29 waist in all their jeans as a 12.)

Chocolah · 30/12/2025 23:16

I think they look really cute and suit shorter and curvier bodies just as well, their cut is very curve skimming and balancing, very unlike skinng jeans. I like Hush and Uniqlo's.

Fatrascal27 · 31/12/2025 06:38

I am tall with long legs. I think maybe they aren’t the right shape for me?

Size 14 and tall, tried M&S barrel leg jeans, cue DH shouting ‘where’s your horse?’. It wasn’t a good look on me. The whole wide leg, cropped boxy look, I’m not sure it looks great on many people…..

Another absolutely ridiculous fashion trend.

I.was looking at some photos from the 1970s last week. With people wearing those really wide trousers and flares that were in fashion then. And they just looked absolutely laughable.

When people look back on photos of themselves wearing the awful wide trousers, and barrel legged trousers that they have been conned into wearing in recent times they will wonder why they ever allowed themselves to be made fools of by the fashion industry.

I agree. People act like sheep jumping on the latest trend.

bostonchamps · 30/12/2025 18:01

I’m just assuming everyone who is saying they look awful on ‘everyone’ just aren’t stylish enough to make them work 💅🏻

Are you familiar with Hans Christian Andersen's The Emperor's New Clothes?

A fashionistas idea of " stylish" is often grounded people's idea of ludicrous.

Blarn · 31/12/2025 08:09

I think the Emperor would have been much happier in barrel leg trousers rather than going out naked.

And @luckylavender
I actually like how it looks and feels comfortable. People can like different things it doesn't mean they are fools being had just because it's not to your taste.

Floisme · 31/12/2025 08:39

I feel really sorry for all the posters who've spent the Christmas holiday trapped on a thread in which they have no interest.

Edited

Of course people like different things.
And you have every right to wear this style of trousers if you want to.

But it's a fact that a lot of people blindly follow the latest fashion trends for the very reason they ARE the latest fashion trend without any consideration of whether they actually look good or suit them. And they are totally oblivious to the fact a lot of people aren't impressed one iota by their unquestioning devotion to what they perceive as being stylish.

Yeah, but aren’t we looking back at pretty recent photos of ourselves in skinny jeans and jeggings and saying ‘what was I thinking?’

I don’t think barrel legs look ridiculous. They look really good on some people. Sadly, not yet on me, but my search continues. I definitely suit wide legs, I love ‘em.

TheChosenTwo · 31/12/2025 08:47

RedRiverShore6 · 28/12/2025 12:12

They suit people that are shortish and not too thin, I'm far too tall for them so look a bit silly.

I actually agree with this, i’m on the taller side and they look silly on me, I’ve tried on a few pairs and they just accentuate the bandy legs. If you’re shorter there’s less length for the bend to be really accentuated and just seems to look better.

Floisme · 31/12/2025 08:47

You appear, Makemeanonymous, to have missed the op's very first sentence:
'I like them'.
So your fashion thesis isn't relevant to this thread.

That might have been her first sentence.
But she goes on to describe them as " clown trousers "
So obviously liking a fashion that even she can see makes the wearer resemble a clown opens up, or should open up, debate about fashion and the clothes the fashion industry tries to dictate we wear.

She asked for suggestions in how to make them work. Because she likes them. It's really not that unusual to try something new and feel a bit lost with it at first, even though you like it, and why you are so invested in pissing on her chips is a bit of a mystery.

I'm disengaging now. Have a nice day.

to answer your question OP you might like the ASOS slim barrel leg, they do a pair in several washes that has an adjustable waist which is brilliant for my hourglassness. I wore the black wash today with a grey sweater tucked in, neppy socks and black suede bostons.
I’m going out tonight in a pair of leather barrels - would you consider non-jeans? I have a white denim shirt and backless western mule heels on (I am freezing but I will suffer for these shoes).

Leather barrell jeans?
Ooh - do share!

Campbellcarrotsoup · 31/12/2025 09:41

I am 5.5 and have found on me the m and s relaxed barrel leg and the cropped carrot work well. I buy the short size as standard came to my shoes which I don't think work. You want them to be reasona by fitted on your hips and bag out from lower down your thighs. Melissa Morrell has a good youtube video on shoes with jeans as it makes a lot of difference as well.

TheOGCCL · 31/12/2025 09:57

They don’t work well on me as my legs are short disproportionate to my back. They are clown looking. I think some straight jeans can have a bit of a curve that is more flattering.

cuberoot · 31/12/2025 13:12

Fat shortie here, they will never have me!

LupaMoonhowl · 31/12/2025 13:23

FuckoffeeBeforeCoffee · 28/12/2025 11:47

They look awful on everyone.

This!!!!
Asked my friend why she was wearing them as she looks fantastic in skinnies and she said ‘they’re more fashionable’
Someone who invented them was gassing a laugh, they look terrible on everyone.

Indeed!

tobee · 31/12/2025 13:28

In my experience the people who derive fun from fashion are the bemused onlookers who are amused by the ridiculous things fashionistas are prepared to wear in the name of adopting the latest trend.

Oh no, that's just the nasty people

Giggorata · 31/12/2025 13:40

I'm not tall and thin and I like them on me.
I've been wearing this style for some years, having seen it worn in Europe as Lagenlook and buying from European designers, like La Bas, Rundholz and Crea Concept.
I didn't know it had become fashionable. In a way I'm sorry about that, as it means that, when it has passed, I will be unfashionable instead of different!

Floisme · 31/12/2025 13:56

I agree Giggorata it can be annoying when fashion catches up with something you've liked for a long time and suddenly it's everywhere, and then inevitably the trend moves on leaving you becalmed. I've got some (trousers, not jeans but the same shape) that I bought around 2016 and that I used to call my funny trousers. They look totally mainstream now.

dudsville · 31/12/2025 14:21

I absolutely love them. When I was mid/late 40's I suddenly felt my skinnies were strangling me. I want loose fits. And while I get that other folks prefer to balance things towards how somehting looks from another's POV, this isn't for me. One of the first things I do with an item (second to considering whether I like the fabric and quality of the make), is how the item feels on. Only after this do I go on to look in the mirror, but by then I may have already decided!
