Barrel leg jeans

I like them. On others! Bought some and felt they looked like clown trousers! Can anyone suggest some that are less clown like but still slightly cropped and wide?

I think they can look absolutely great on some people. Sadly I haven't found a pair I get on with but my friend wears them and looks fantastic in them.

I personally think they look better when they're slightly cropped rather than full length.

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 31/12/2025 14:29

For those who don’t want to spend loads on them try Tu:-

lindyloo57 · 31/12/2025 15:55

I like them on others, and really want them to suit me, as I can't wear my skinnies anymore as feel dated in them, thats just me, not saying they are dated, so i have bootcut and wideleg jeans, have tried barrel leg but like someone said ,i too feel like a clown in them, so I thought I would try barrel leg joggers from next , they do a pk of 3 , but they don't work for me, is it because I am petite 5ft2 ?

Skinnysaluki · 31/12/2025 17:45

I can’t work out what shoes to wear with barrel leg jeans. Also I think I keep getting the length wrong- so what shoes? And where should they end?!

Branleuse · 31/12/2025 17:49

People that think barrel leg jeans look awful on everyone are generally miserable and ugly and their entire wardrobe makes them look dated and old.
They still wear bootcut and skinnies and their dad sells avon

bostonchamps · 01/01/2026 02:18

@Makemeanonymousmaybe sometimes not everyone wants to be grounded, sometimes things can just be whimsical and fun? I find fashion whimsical and fun, that doesn’t make me a bad person, or a naked emperor. There isn’t much fun in life, barrel leg jeans are fun for me, and other people. It’s not that deep.

@twilightcafethey Topshop @ asos - I have the black and navy and size up for a more relaxed fit.

Another absolutely ridiculous fashion trend.

I.was looking at some photos from the 1970s last week. With people wearing those really wide trousers and flares that were in fashion then. And they just looked absolutely laughable.

When people look back on photos of themselves wearing the awful wide trousers, and barrel legged trousers that they have been conned into wearing in recent times they will wonder why they ever allowed themselves to be made fools of by the fashion industry.

I’d put money on it that you still
wear skinny jeans and declare they suit you and will never stop wearing them. Skinnies suit very few people but they had their time but they definitely aren’t and will never be a classic.

I also like the fashion of the 70s.

Clothes are meant to come and go.

Barrel jeans are very cool.

The Japanese made denim ones from Toast are gorgeous.

Yes, I love mine ❤

I have various styles of trousers including a few pairs of skinny jeans.

And daily I see women wearing a variety of styles of trousers , including some in skinny jeans and very many in leggings. I see some in awful wide leg trousers and a very very few in barrel leg trousers.

I don't " declare" skinny legged jeans " suit me". I actually don't think I've ever looked in the mirror and said anything " suits me" . I'm not a vain, self centered person. But I do know what clothes I like the look of. And I do know what looks ridiculous and I do know what clothes I wouldn't even wear around the house, let alone be seen out in public wearing.

You are entitled to think barrel legged jeans " look cool". But that doesn't mean people who see you wearing them agree with you.

Bjorkdidit · 01/01/2026 06:36

I have the M&S ones and I really like them and I feel good I them which is unusual as I'm currently at least 20 pounds heavier than I'd like to be (5 7, size 16, 50 something). They're only £30 too and come in a range of colours.

LadyClumber · 01/01/2026 07:37

@lindyloo57 - I am 5 foot and size 4-6. I find that barrel jeans/ trousers with a slimmer, less exaggerated silhouette work best on me as they are more in proportion with my frame.

TealReader · 01/01/2026 09:04

I love them. Go for 100% cotton, not too exaggerated. I have a pair from Abercrombie curve love (very wide hips/smaller waist here) and a more baggy pair from Zara. Like the shape of the M&S carrot jeans but thought quality was poor and the waist was swimming on me- but a lot of people find they work. Also have the Uniqlo barrel trousers which are fantastic.

The move away from skinny jeans and trousers being the only option is my absolute favourite thing about fashion in the last few years. I’ve gone from wearing only skirts and dresses to loving all the different trouser shapes.

LlynTegid · 01/01/2026 09:07

Hope OP you can find something you like. My own opinion is that they are better than skinny jeans, and a lot better than the 2018 or so fashion of having jeans cropped about three inches too short.

Same. Yesterday (dry and sunny) I wore flares. Today I'm wearing straight leg. I hope no style ever again achieves the same kind of iron grip over the high street that skinnies had from around 2002-2016.

Agreed!! I wear skinnies with my knee high country boots for dog walking but also wear straight leg, barrel and wide leg jeans/ trousers depending on my mood and the weather. Love that it is now possible to find and wear a range of styles - gives people greater freedom to dress the way that makes them happy.

TealReader · 01/01/2026 10:42

Same. In the past week or so I’ve worn straight leg jeans/cords, barrels, wide legs and some tapered trousers with elasticated cuffs. It’s so much more fun to get dressed!

I’m genuinely puzzled why you are even gracing the style and beauty board when you appear to think clothes signify vanity and self centred mess. Your presence here with your Calvinist take on clothes is unusual to say the least.

NotSmallButFunSize · 01/01/2026 20:45

Well I have a pair and I think they look good!

I am 5"2 and an 8-10, they're high waisted ones with a front seam from George. Bought totally on a whim just to try them and they were so much better than I expected.

I wear them with trainers as they are ankle length and a slimmer top to balance them out. I am more top heavy as a body type so the looseness gives me more shape on the bottom

Barwindie · 01/01/2026 21:09

I love them! I’m 5’11 and size 8-10 and I think they work well on me, as long as I’m careful that they’re not too short. Skinnies make me look lanky and top heavy, and wide legs have just too much fabric for the amount of limb somehow.

Faves are from Hush, CoH and Frame. I also quite like a pair from M&S, but when I ordered the same size and style in a different colour, they fit totally differently.

Oh I didn't realise Style and Beauty was an exclusive forum that only the select few can post on.

Of course I'm interested in fashion to a certain extent, if only because the fashion industry very much dictates what clothing is available for me to buy for myself.

And I have clothes I really like and enjoy wearing. I hope that the only time I look a " mess" as you put it is when i'm wearing my old clothes that I keep for gardening or house decorating.

I hope that I keep my powers of judgement when it comes to clothing. I know everyone's taste is different but I do find some fashion trends inexplicable. Barrel leg jeans or trousers is one of those trends. And I am allowed to express my opinion on them on MN despite you thinking I should shut up.and go away!

You do what you like dear. I'm sure you're fine in real life.

Isthisright220 · 02/01/2026 08:57

I recommend Abercrombie barrel legs and actually Primark too. They can look great with the right fit.

Lisacuddy1 · 02/01/2026 09:09

evilharpy · 28/12/2025 12:59

These, all day long. They are the best jeans I've had for years.

The Whistles ones are also very good, I have a pair in a darkish khaki.

Also have some from H&M (nice fit, but very soft denim so tend to look more baggy and tapered at the ankle than true barrel - not a bad thing just different), and some balloon leg from M&S (far more subtle shape than the name would suggest). But Sainsburys are the best by far.

I gained a lot of weight over the last couple of years and have now lost it all plus an extra stone, and have had the Sainsburys jeans in every size from 14 (possibly 16) down to 8 and they suited me at every size. I'm 5' 6" and a small waisted pear, currently arseless due to weight loss, and definitely do not look like a clown. I do however look like a parsnip or some kind of misshapen sausage in skinny jeans.

do you have a link for the whistles ones? Are they the ‘authentic’ style?

Well at least I don't patronise and belittle people, as you appear to enjoy doing.

You have every right to jump on whatever fashion band wagon you want. But the way you , and some other pp on this thread, take such exception to someone expressing a viewpoint which does not conform to yours, is very disturbing.

Floisme · 02/01/2026 10:10

@Lisacuddy1 I've had some Whistles ones. They were a charity shop find a few years ago so I can't be certain of the name but the ones they're describing on the website as 'authentic barrel leg' look pretty close. The curve of the leg was quite gentle and they were also a really nice, sturdy denim so they kept their shape very well. The only thing I didn't like was they had this faux fraying at the hem - I thought I could live with it but in the end it annoyed me too much and I re-donated them. Shame as I think they'd have been my favourite otherwise. However the current ones on the website don't seem to have that detail.
