Skinny jeans

I have begun to feel frumpy and outdated wearing skinny jeans. Can’t really afford to refresh my wardrobe atm. I lived in them for years either with knee high boots or Chelsea type boots.

Is there a way to make them feel modern? I am middle aged, petite, size 10 in case that’s relevant.

to make matters worse, in the last few weeks before I started feeling they were outdated, I bought several bargain pairs on Vinted.. so my wardrobe is now full of a garment which doesn’t make me feel great 🙈

How very bizarre!

All I see over social media now are “barrel jeans” - never tired any on but suspect I’d look a bit odd in them. And would then also need to buy new tops / footwear etc to look “right” - maybe I should just embrace frump hood.

Thank you. Having read the article though, I suspect Vogue would not approve of my skinny jeans as they are too skinny and tight fitting!

I’m also a petite size 8/10 and barrel jeans look absolutely ridiculous on me. I have the odd wide leg pair but also like mom jeans.

I think there’s still a place for skinny jeans and I’m sure that they’ll creep back into favour again but slightly different as curious orange has posted.

RillHunner · 21/12/2025 17:33

(Also I never realised they had ever gone out of fashion - clearly I’m way out of touch! 😬)

I can’t seem to make wide leg jeans work as I am short, and specifically my legs are too short..

I get your frustration. They will come round again but who knows how soon.
Currently, I think the barrel leg, 80s, straight leg, mom, flared and wide leg are in fashion, but I'm not the trendiest so I might be wrong!
In the same situation, I picked up a couple of pairs of Mon jeans on Vinted and my wide leg ones are from the supermarket, they're no different to more expensive ones. Charity shops are also good, but need some serious hunting as those shapes go quickly!

Ministerofmumbles · 21/12/2025 17:36

I’m 5ft 3 and have a couple of pairs from M&S that work - have you tried the short/petite sizing?

RillHunner · 21/12/2025 18:29

good point, I’ll see if I can try some petite styles on in the new year. Spending most of my life undressed at present so no immediate rush!

Size 10-12 40 year old who lives in skinny jeans / jeggings and boots. Love it. No plans to move. I’ve actually been fancying a nice pair of ballet flats for the spring !

FuzzyFelt85 · 21/12/2025 18:36

Just googled barrel leg jeans - they are ridiculous !

Myfridgeiscool · 21/12/2025 18:40

I’m currently living in Levi skinny straight low rise jeans. I spend my life wearing boots or wellies. No chance I could get owt flappy on with wellies. I’m sticking to skinnies.

FoxRedPuppy · 21/12/2025 18:44

I’m no fashionista, but I have recently lost 3.5 stone and bought skinny jeans for the first time in my life. Don’t care if they are out, I’ve never been able to wear them! And some slim straight ones. Barrel legs look daft to me.

Most of mine come from Vinted and supermarkets.

KitsyWitsy · 21/12/2025 18:52

I have one pair of jeans... skinny Levis. I hate any other cut of jeans and don't give a toss about fashion. I think skinny looks best on me.

TwinklyMoose · 21/12/2025 19:14

I think skinny jeans will always be a classic, especially with loafers or ballet pumps. However if you do want a change M and S Stovepipe jeans in the short leg length work for me and I am your height. I did have to get them shortened despite them being short leg but they are more fitted at the top and round the bottom but still a straight leg.
I do find it a bit confusing with all the names of jeans now though!

UpMyself · 21/12/2025 19:18

Wear what you have. Anything goes and I'm another who won't wear wide-legged jeans.

Terrytheweasel · 21/12/2025 19:23

Skinny jeans still look best with knee high boots. I wouldn’t worry too much.

megacat · 21/12/2025 19:37

When I see anyone whether male or female wearing skinnies I assume they don’t care about fashion and have had them several years. There really is no way to make them look current.

Flog them all back on Vinted and treat yourself to some in a different shape. You can get great well cut jeans in Sainsbury’s for about £20.

RillHunner · 21/12/2025 20:17

Megacat, what shapes in Sainsburys do you recommend.

(ive had most of my clothes for several years 😬im not bothered about bring super trendy, but on the other hand don’t want to look frumpy)
