I managed to shrink and destroy a beloved scarf today.

My favourite pjyma trousers ( which I’m currently wearing!)

TheTowerAtMidnight · 12/12/2025 22:33

I chuck everything on at 40. Never shrunk anything.

Nitgel · 12/12/2025 22:34

Some lovely dark grey perfecting fitting trousers from a boutique in kensington. Cost £££ and they looked fab. Shrank 1st wash and looked like leggins after. This was in 1992 and i am still upset about that.

SpigTheFish · 12/12/2025 22:35

A £200 new cashmere ivory jumper I'd worn twice. Forgot it was wool and threw it in a 40 wash. It came out looking like a felt babygrow.

GreyTS · 12/12/2025 22:43

A €300 jumper I bought my husband 20 years ago, still have no idea how it ended up in a bundle of cottons on a 40 degree wash, honestly we both died laughing it looked so ridiculous to

Omg that’s exactly what it was like, a v thick felt baby jumper with not a bit of stretch 🤣

paddleboardingmum · 12/12/2025 22:50

Oh no to all these. Damn. My scarf was like felt too and about a quarter of the size. It's hard when it's something you love. I'd forgotten but once I got an amazing jumper from TK Maxx (Farhi) and I loved it, it was perfect. Shrunk that too eventually.

I'm so sorry I can't share.. triggered and just too sad. It was a very soft, perfectly fitting and, given my height, perfect length jumper.
I'm used to the hopeful stretching but you just know when it's still tough when you pull

Monty27 · 12/12/2025 23:00

Jumpers and linen when I was younger and blissfully unaware of the fabric and temperature rules. Tough lesson not to be repeated.

OnlyOneAdda · 12/12/2025 23:05

I must have accidentally shrunk everything because it's all so tight 😳

ShaunaOfTheDead · 12/12/2025 23:15

M&S wide leg jersey cargo trousers, now flapping around my ankles. Luckily I bought a longer length pair too, which shrunk to floor length Smile

prettydesertflower · 13/12/2025 08:00

Lochmere 100% cashmere jumper I had only worn once. Even though it was an accident. Just writing this down hurts my heart.

triggers34 · 13/12/2025 08:00

Toast cashmere mix dress . I stupidly didn’t look at the washing instructions , it still fits but I loved it before now it’s a bit meh.

carbonelthecat · 13/12/2025 08:05

I accidentally chucked my lovely Navy Grey crew neck wool jumper in a normal 40 wash as well. Came out tiny and felted.

To add insult to injury I tried to unfelt it using conditioner, but only ended up wasting a fucktonne of nice conditioner as well as it didn’t do a thing!

staryellow · 13/12/2025 08:18

I got a lovely blue secondhand merino&cashmere Margaret Howell jumper on Vinted for only about £40. I loved it so much, I love her clothes but rarely can afford to buy even secondhand. I wore it only a couple of times then somehow it ended up in the wrong wash and then tumble dryer. It had shrunk so much in my clothes grief I tried to make 7yo ds wear it, even though it was ridiculously even too small for him. He was like, I don't want it, it's itchy. And I was, it's got cashmere in it it can't be itchy, it's beautiful😐😂

BlueberryOats · 13/12/2025 16:59

John Lewis cashmere jumper. I thought it was my blue cotton sweatshirt. It would suit a dwarf now.

I pondered googling is there anything that can be done for a shrunken cashmere jumper, but in my heart I knew there was not.

paddleboardingmum · 13/12/2025 17:14

So much cashmere ruined! commiserations. I love trying to get ds to wear it @staryellow 😂

I had a bog standard wool jumper from arket or cos. It was just a good basic jumper. It would have been such great value had I not shrunk it.

Countless falke and chup wool socks.

I won last year though. I shrunk a beloved toast cardigan. Soaked it in conditioner and blocked it. It's very wearable now and a better colour actually. I now block my socks after each wash!

sesquipedalian · 13/12/2025 18:04

I knitted a very beautiful and complicated matinée jacket in three ply wool for PFB. My DSis put it in the washer and reduced it to doll’s clothes for a very small doll…

GreenCandleWax · 13/12/2025 18:08

Lots of my DH's socks which I then have to wear as they no longer fit him. Still haven't grasped how to avoid them shrinking at 40 degrees.

NutButterOnToast · 13/12/2025 18:12

A lambswool jumper that was my XXL DH's

It's mine now 🤣

A lovely wool cardy with wooden buttons came out felted. Still sad about that. It was the perfect slouchy fit for wearing round the house in winter.

My ex's mother shrunk a zipped wool hoody which cost me £100 in 2003 so you can imagine how gutted I was. I was a student and I couldn't afford to replace it. I couldn't really afford to buy it in the first place but I wore it constantly. It was thick and stretchy and perfect. I'm still annoyed about it, actually! I would love a replacement but never seen one.

troppibambini6 · 13/12/2025 18:45

My Bella Freud jumper. I’d only worn it once and it somehow ended up in the drier. £350 down the drain 😩

HornyHornersPinkyWinky · 13/12/2025 18:59

A beautiful Sezane Emile cardigan made of alpaca wool that had cost €125 and had been worn precisely twice.

It looked comically ridiculous when it came out.

Ohwhatfuckeryitistoride · 13/12/2025 19:01

Ive been lucky, but my mum was a holy terror. My dad had a gorgeous hand knitted fairisle jumper (which I "borrowed") Let's say I had the best dressed teddy in town. Then I made a lovely wool crepe unstructured blazer, was perfect. Until mum chucked it in a hot wash...
