I managed to shrink and destroy a beloved scarf today.

@dudsville I did something similar on my son's jumper and he has yet to forgive me. How did you fix your jumper??

TheDandyLion · 13/12/2025 19:17

A pair of supposedly all cotton curtains. Thankfully only basic plain pair for the utility room but they ended up almost 4 inches shorter and the lining stuck out at the bottom.

£350 cashmere jumper. Shrunk so badly that my 3 year old wears it now. I get tears in my eyes whenever I see her in it

TootsMaHoots · 13/12/2025 19:29

My mother in law once shrunk every single jumper that my children and I owned. We had been back to the uk from where we were living and we had been away for a month. Whilst I had jet lag she helpfully washed every item of knitwear we owned. Including ones I had just got for Christmas.

Packing for upcoming warm weather holidays today and my most favourite summer dress has shrunk to the point it no longer covers my arse - it was a midi length! Christ knows what I’ve done, but it’s BAD 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️

Not me but my mum shrunk my Pringle diamond patterned jumper ,cost £40 in 82 it fitted one of my sister's dolls.

Really nice wool jumper (didn't realise I was allergic in those days!) that found its way into the launderette wash at university...I didn't have many jumpers in those days.

I still haven’t recovered from a 1997 incident when I shrunk the most beautiful bias cut silk silvery grey and blue wraparound skirt….be cause xi didnt realise it was silk. I’d only worn it once to an October wedding and was looking forward to a few Xmas parties in it. I can still see it in minds eye - fit for a Barbie.

I had a lovely dusky pink merino wool jumper from uniqlo that I shrunk :( still upset about that!

I had a bog standard wool jumper from arket or cos. It was just a good basic jumper. It would have been such great value had I not shrunk it.

Countless falke and chup wool socks.

I won last year though. I shrunk a beloved toast cardigan. Soaked it in conditioner and blocked it. It's very wearable now and a better colour actually. I now block my socks after each wash!

Excuse my ignorance but what is blocking? Does it unshrink wool? If so, where can I find this miracle? 😊

Dutchhouse14 · 13/12/2025 23:37

too many lovely Jumpers

And {mention:MollyVolley}@MollyVolley Blocking is a structure you put wet wool on, for things that have shrunk it can help get some of the shape back, but it isn't a miracle, it doesn't unfelt. For my cardigan that had felted, I had to spend time shaking it and using a lint roller to gather the felted wool. I really wanted to vacuum it! But after a while and a lot of dedication, I did get a much loved item back in circulation but not back to the original shape.

You can buy blocking structures on line, but I made my own for the cardigan and the socks.

I bought 5 cashmere jumpers in a little 2nd hand shop which were £2.50 each!!! Glorious earthy colours. Put them in washing machine until later as laundry basket full, promptly forgot, then bunged machine on a maintenance wash...
Ten years on and it still hurts

endofthecorridoor · 14/12/2025 09:09

Gorgeous pale pink wool jumper x 2. I've given up replacing them as I'm too clumsy to keep them clean and they seem to just accidentally fall in the washing machine It was my DH both times

Lorrymum · 14/12/2025 11:55

Sofa and chair covers. I had to stuff the cushions back in with the undone zips to the back They only shrank a tiny bit but that was enough.
My next sofa was leather!

Placestogo · 14/12/2025 11:59

Well, i put a baikjen cardigan in the wash with other dark clothes today, 40C - this was an act of sabotage. I hate this cardigan, it is raspberry pink and doesnt suit me at all, it bobbles so much too. I cant bear to throw it away because it was £££. So im glad now i have a reason to throw it away….

LaurieFairyCake · 14/12/2025 13:13

A wool Pringle jumper. I was a size 14 at the time, shrank it down to a size 6. Wore it ONCE, threw it out.

Repurchased it.

Then got down to a size 6 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️

Had chucked the first jumper out as unsaveable, new one now way too big…..

I am not destined to own this fucking jumper more than one wear

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 14/12/2025 16:19

About 30 years ago I had a lovely pale blue chunky knit tunic jumper from Warehouse. It had a sailor collar and there were royal blue stripes on the cuffs and around the collar. It was lovely and soft, but also robust.

I didn’t shrink it. DH did. Still miss it. I found an orange/red version in a charity shop a few years later. I bought it, but gave it back fairly soon, Orange is not my colour!
