How would you style this skirt...

... for a daytime (late afternoon) drinks and nibbles party? As in, what sort of top and shoes?

Age 50. Size 10. In winter, but a warm house so I think I'd boil in a relaxed jumper and boots like the model is wearing. I've ordered the skirt in both black and maroon to see which is nicer in person...

Link in case the picture doesn't show up!

A T shirt? Lots of metallic or glittery ones around at the moment. Pointed flats? If you don’t want to wear boots! Obviously depending on which colour skirt you choose .

I’ve got similar and wear with chunky boots and a cropped thick knit, fitted cardigan.

FlappicusSmith · 12/12/2025 10:42

@scater yes that would be my go-to, but I'll boil if I wear that I think (house is quite warm)!

Short sleeve cardie?

PeonyPatch · 12/12/2025 10:51

A light Turtleneck knit or a tshirt !

scater · 12/12/2025 10:53

I like the other stories one, not sure about the hemline of the other sitting nicely over a net skirt

FlappicusSmith · 12/12/2025 11:44

Agreed @scater - although I like the boat neckline better. Very scooped necks don't look great on me.

I tried on a short-sleeve knit t-shirt in Zara the other day but I thought maybe it looked a bit too twinset-and-pearls...

Short sleeve satin / silk T shirt.

Band / graphic T shirt tucked under an elastic belt worn underneath if needed, to avoid bulk under the skirt.

I do wear my tulle and satin skirts with fine knit merino jumpers but I’m never too hot!

Are you near a Uniqlo, by any chance? They currently have long sleeved, round neck velvet/velour t-shirts on sale (black, chocolate brown, and a gorgeous deep burgundy) which, together with the pointed, sling-back pumps linked above, would look classic and elegant.

Aluna · 12/12/2025 13:21

Because it’s quite long and floofy I’d go for a slim stretch top.

This would look lovely with either colour https://www2.hm.com/en_gb/productpage.1299505005.html

anon2022anon · 12/12/2025 14:13

Or I've bought this, which is nice and elegant on, a thin, soft knit

I love the sparkly knit anon2022 has posted. M&S do a similar lightweight glittery knit. I have it in dark green, I will see if I can find it to link.

That sounds perfect. I'm not near one, but can order online...

can't do heels, sadly

@NigelForage clearly loads of people agree with you about that Next top as it's sold out :(

Looking at these shoe options... Expensive, but I have a pair of platform Esska's that are incredibly comfortable (and the only heels I can wear) and they do wide fitting. Becuase this party is at home, I don't want to wear heels.

Which one, do you think? Open to other suggestions too... I'm not sure yet whether the skirt will be black or maroon as I've ordered both (maroon only available in the size larger than I usually wear, so might anyway be too big)

Black pointy

I wear stuff like that with chunky loose knit jumpers so it’s not too hot. Or a black oversized band teeshirt with a French tuck at the front. I’d wear converse or similar with it. Or a short sequinned cardigan over a black vest
