Help. I am seriously considering buying some Crocs...

I am off on holiday abroad in a month and am seriously thinking of buying a pair. I was thinking that if I bought a 'decent' pair I could travel in them then wear them on the beach and to breakfast etc and only have to take one other pair of shoes to wear in the evening.

Am I mad or is there a better alternative?

Don't do it. Crocs are horrible!! Of course, that is only my opinion and I am hardly, Kate Moss in the fashion department. If you are happy with them, that is all that matters. ( Crocs are fowl though)

Omg MrsPuddleduck don't mention Sketchers...I've still got a bag of frozen peas on my black eye for mentioning the (even worse) Asda version of them on here the other day

Basically if you want Crocs, go for it, or whatever el cheapo Croc-esque ones you can find. They are darn comfortable and hardwearing and alright imo for casual traipsing about and camping type stuff. They are also comfortable straight away and don't need to be broken in like lots of new shoes do.

You won't get the style queens on here to say they're ok in any circumstances though, never in a million years.

Having said that, just don't fall into the trap of wearing them too often. Like scrunchies and lycra leggings and fleeces you can have too much 'comfort' iykwim .

MadamePlatypus · 11/06/2008 17:17

They are the deely boppers of our age - everywhere but why? (OK, I understand they are practical, but still...)

prideandprejudice · 11/06/2008 17:57

Great for kids imo ( mine have them) but so wrong on adults. Get some pretty birkenstocks instead for the same sort of money and you won't cringe at your holiday photos in a few years time...!

welshdeb · 11/06/2008 18:03

I got a 2 pairs of crocs in not "crocs" style ifywim they are called Sassari (I think) and Cyprus and are both heeled mules. Very light and comfy

oldlady - the boden sale is usually around the 1st of July - or the closest Friday to that.

Kindersurprise · 11/06/2008 18:10

Ruth
Sorry, not funny really if there have been people hurt, but I could not help myself. I laughed when you mentioned that some escalators have signs warning of the dangers of Crocs. I am just imagining the sign.

Where did the idea come from that Birkenstocks are more stylish than Crocs? Here in Germany they have a very Hausfrau/Müslieater/Nurse image. I would much rather wear Crocs than Birkies. My DH used to call me Schwester KS when I wore them.

Astrophe · 11/06/2008 18:28

opinions on the athens croc?

littlebrownmouse · 11/06/2008 19:50

Crocs have changed my life!! I've spent every summer for as long as I can remember with hot, sweaty, rubbed, uncomfortable feet with corns, callouses and horrid bleeding bits. I have to wear socks or my feet smell so much that I can smell them with my sandals still on. Until last year I hated summer becasue of this (my feet are wide and clearly a bit mingy as far as sweating goes). Last year I bought crocs and now have the fabbest summer foot experience ever. OK, they look a bit perculiar, but my feet are cool, comfortable and I have no socks, plasters, cornsor callouses. I don't have to wear winter shoes all summer to be comfy. I love them. But yes, they look a bit odd!

emj23 · 11/06/2008 21:59

Crocs are revolting. I saw a whole family wearing them yesterday, little girl and mum in lilac ones, khaki ones for the dad and little boy. Ew... the amount of sticky sweatiness they must have to cope with.

MogTheForgetfulCat · 11/06/2008 22:18

I think they are vile and ugly. Cute on little children (although surely will result in flat feet?) because they come in clown colours, but look awful otherwise. Try FitFlops and get a flip flop AND toned legs in one - bargain! Haven't tried them, but my mum has a pair. Then again, she's got Crocs, too so maybe not the best role model...

halogen · 11/06/2008 22:22

Why would they result in flat feet? They have quite good arch support, certainly better than lots of other children's sandals available.

canofworms · 12/06/2008 00:13

I bought these

Hate crocs with a passion - never seen such ugly looking things! BUT went on holiday to usa and found these - tried them on, fell in love with them, so comfy etc etc. Don't know if you could find them over here but perfect for holidays

notasheep · 12/06/2008 01:08

Varcas are the new crocs-you heard it here first! i want a pair in every colour and fabric and they come in a size 9

Alambil · 12/06/2008 01:58

crocs don't have to be hideous

I want some Alice crocs (ballerina with one strap) because they are a bit wider than normal ballet pumps (have very wide feet)

MrsPuddleduck · 12/06/2008 10:04

Gosh, thanks for all the suggestions.

I also quite like the Athens ones - can you put the second strap behind your foot if you need to?

Can't find Varcas?

I quite like the idea of Birkenstocks - are they comfy? I am get really sore feet with the thong piece in a flip flop - I swear I am only person who needs to wear them in!

As for suitable footwear at an airport - My DH - who is nice as pie most of the time - morphs into Satan at the sight of a heavy suitcase. Basically I have to be on my toes so to speak as he throws a complete hissy fit at the airport every year (miserable git). It usually starts as he has to load the car. This year he says we can only take 2 suitcases (there are four of us fgs!) - hence me only taking two pairs of shoes! He is fine once they are loaded on the plane!

And we WILL be taking 3 suitcases as a compromise!

I have a pair of Sketchers Waterbugs. They do make your feet sweat after awhile and rubbed my feet when we went to Durdle Door last year, so are no good for alot of walking. They are great for going swimming though.

I can't do flip flops. Always hated them as I was growing up as I always seemed to hurt my feet. I prefer something a bit more enclosed. I have ordered a pair of these in black, after a thread someone made on here about wearing the red ones in the school playground.

Lucycat · 12/06/2008 12:25

I got some of the Alice crocs for my birthday on tuesday in the purple and they are swoonsome - all the girls at school love them and they are fairly narrow for my skinny feet, although you can stretch the top band to make them bigger if you want.

anyway who am I to talk I like Crocs - my only tip is to only wear them in a colour that you would normally wear shoes in - I have a sage green pair, a ruby pair and now my purple Alices.

so not bright yellow

littlebrownmouse · 12/06/2008 14:20

no emj, they are not sweaty at all. I have the world's sweatiest feet and they don't sweat in crocs. I don't understand the science behind them but they really are not sweaty. The only issue I have with them (apart from getting over how they look!) is that when I push the buggy or a shopping trolley when wearing them, I get static shocks. Anyone else have this or is it just me who's highly charged?
