Roman brand clothes

I've been getting loads of ads in my Facebook feed for this brand, and I really like a lot of their stuff

If you're familiar with this clothing brand, what age range do you think it's suitable for?

I'm just worried about coming across as "mutton dressed as lamb"

I would say 70+. Everytime someone mentions Roman on here, I go and take a look and I just don't get the love for it. And I say this as someone who spends most of her time in joggers and fleece!

Frenchfrychic · 08/12/2025 17:55

I think a very elderly demographic or dress sense; I’m in my fifties snd I’d not wear it it,looks cheap and dated in the main.

Gettingbysomehow · 08/12/2025 18:17

They are extremely touch and go. Some items are awful while others are ok but there is a lot of rubbish on the site.
They don't accept returns unless the item is faulty. You can exchange them for a different size but that's it..

They do accept returns for refunds, I just did one, no problem at all.

I recently bought a black jacket, I like longline jackets and they were one of the very few places I could find that sells them. It looks smart, although it's all manmade fibre. They also do clothes in plus sizes which is good if you're fat( I am).

I'm in my sixties and would say that it's a middle aged and older sort of shop.

I saw a picture of the Director of the Royal Horticultural Society in my latest members' magazine and she was wearing the white version of the Roman black jacket I recently bought, and I thought if it's good enough for her..

HurdyGurdy19 · 08/12/2025 18:34

Thank you. I'll give them a miss then 😅

I am struggling to find a brand that I like.

I've lived in Bon Marche for years. Not because I particularly like their clothes, but because they have a shop in our town, and they do a leg length that fits me.

Having started to lose a decent amount of weight (still got a long way to go), I'm only now starting to take a bit more interest in clothes, rather than seeing them as something to hide me from neck to ankles, so I feel like I'm starting from scratch

Try vinted.
]I’m in my fifties, I love Reiss, me and em, max Mara etc, you filter by your size and I’d suggest new with tags, new without tags and very good as condition. For the priv4 you buy new from these cheaper brands you can buy something in excellent quality on vinted.

IHeartKingThistle · 08/12/2025 18:56

If you find something you like, why does it matter what brand it’s from? I’m in my 40s and I have a gorgeous dress from Roman that I look hot in 😂 . My stuff is from all over the place.

IHeartKingThistle · 08/12/2025 18:57

But mostly Vinted!

Creepybookworm · 08/12/2025 19:00

There is a Roman shop near me and the stuff looks better online than in the shop. Some of it is ok though.

Laiste · 08/12/2025 19:06

I had a knitted, mid-thigh length knitted dress from them a couple of years ago - navy blue with stars. It was really nice !

ScoutOfTheSoftHeartsClub · 08/12/2025 19:06

@HurdyGurdy19 why not start a new thread asking for clothing / style suggestions? Give details of your size, height, budget and lifestyle.

(Can’t comment on the brand you ask about as I’ve only ever encountered them as a name on MN.)

Thank you.

I've read a few threads on here where people have complained that Vinted have changed listings' sizings, so it did put me off using it.

As I said, I'm losing weight, so don't want to spend too much as (hopefully) I won't be wearing them long before needing a smaller size

This.

I have never actually bought from Romans but have seen a few things I’d have considered if I’d needed more jumpers / clothes for a specific event. I prefer them to the beige / neutral boringness often suggested on here.

Honestly it’s fine, just filter by your size - 12- 14 or whatever, and sure you need to click on the image but it is no big deal really.

CeliaCanth · 08/12/2025 19:39

I’ve just bought a (subtly) sequinned party dress from there. Wasn’t prepared to pay a lot for something I’m only going to wear once - and it’s nicer than I expected, not old lady-ish at all (although I admit, at 59, my tastes differ from 30 years ago!)

CharlotteCChapel · 08/12/2025 19:45

A lot of te clothes are things you'd wear to a party or as a wedding guest. Saying that they also do hippyish clothes in the summer. Years ago I bought the perfect sun dress from there, they had the same dress in different colours for years. When my old dress died a death I went to buy it and they didn't do them any more.

Sesma · 08/12/2025 19:45

I'm in my 60s and have some Roman cardigans, I would say they are for an older age range. I quite like them as I am fairly tall and they fit quite well as they are a longer style

YYURYYUCICYYUR4ME · 08/12/2025 20:03

Don't discount them, like most retailers they have the odd gem (and I'm fussy), but the website is often better. I have a faux burgundy sheepskin, practically identical to one from a much more expensive brand, for a tenth of the price and everyone comments on it, so they got that right and it fits very well. Just browse and move on if nothing of note, but don't ignore them totally.

Youllnevergetabetterbitofbutteronyourknife · 08/12/2025 20:59

As others have said, don't discount it based on a pre-conceived notion of the age range it's for. I am 46 and have a lovely dress from Roman and a couple of tops. There are some things I definitely wouldn't wear, but that's true of most places. I tend to go down a size with Roman, a bit like Next, so it's win win really! 😁

FancyCatSlave · 08/12/2025 21:04

I buy their tailored trousers for work, they are the only ones that fit me (I’m short). I buy via Next and I am nearly 48.
I have the wide leg and taper black trousers, they are synthetic but they fit perfectly, loads of stretch and don’t need ironing.

I haven’t been wowed by anything else though but for me the trousers are a find. I’m 5ft 4 and too tall for petite so places are limited. M&S don’t fit me in the waist (too small on the waist and too big on the hips if I go bigger). Whatever shape Roman are cutting for its me 😂

Timeforanewgame · 08/12/2025 21:28

I'm early 40s and have some lovely dresses from Roman.

RuthW · 08/12/2025 21:52

My daughter is 30 and Has a Roman dress. I’m 57 and would wear it. I think generally it’s for 35+

MrsLizzieDarcy · 08/12/2025 21:55

I've got loads of nice summer tops from there, but find their winter stuff awful - goes bobbly, colour fades after 2 washes so I don't tend to be a regular customer.

I get most of my stuff from White Stuff - it washes better.

Don’t dismiss them, why not try them. I’ve got quite a few clothes from them. They’re well made and have a good choice of styles for all ages and sizes. Certainly better than Bon Marché
