2026 No Buy

Eatingmusselsfromashell · 07/12/2025 00:52

I am planning a strict 2026 clothes no buy. I’ve tried in the past but the maximum I achieved was 3 months or so.
I’m sick of the cycle of seeing/ wanting / buying. I want to couple my No Buy with some other habit changes. I would like to limit screen time to one hour a day (except when listening to podcasts/ books and language learning). This is the year to brush up my Spanish and German for trips later in the year. I am annoyed at the hours of life I have wasted scrolling online sites.
I’ve tidied wardrobe in preparation and am ebaying / charity shopping anything which isn’t currently working for me.
Anyone else want to join me for moral support?

Yes please ! I counted my jumpers this week. Not including sweatshirts or outdoor jackets I've got 60 jumpers. I honestly don't need anything
I'm sick of being manipulated by marketing
So far it feels like a weight lifted off me not having to read the hundreds of marketing emails I receive.

DH is also on board to quit his Amazon and temu habits

Obviouslynotallthere · 26/12/2025 09:56

I’m definitely in. I have too many clothes and always feel overwhelmed with stuff this time of year. I also need to lose some weight, not a lot but maybe a stone. Mostly I just need less and save more.

Mcdhotchoc · 26/12/2025 10:02

I am trying minimal buy. Honestly cutting out the scrolling is my number one thing.

ADifferentKindOfMum · 26/12/2025 10:32

I had 3 things on my wish list before embarking on a hard no-buy and have ordered 2 of them, the final one shall be from January’s pay then that is it. I want to spend any disposable income on travel plans now, or experiences. I’ve been working through stuff in my wardrobe I should be getting the most wear from and it’s been quite enjoyable rather than the same old outfits on repeat.

Cyclingmummy1 · 26/12/2025 13:01

I'm going to use all the candles I have accrued. DB buys either White Company or Espa every Christmas and I've got a bit of a stockpile as I like to use them as decor.

SocksAndTheCity · 26/12/2025 13:06

I cracked and ordered a red coat I had my eye on in M&S when I saw it had gone half price, but it's not 2026 yet and that will definitely be it!

I'll return it right away if I'm even slightly not sure about it too, since I have a big M&S ten minutes away.

LadyClumber · 26/12/2025 13:49

@notnorman - it’s a minefield, isn’t it! I need to pick up a scarf I bought on impulse from Vinted which is identical to a scarf I already own and forgot that I had! At least I know I still like it…

I really need to delete it.
but I also really need to sell all the stuff I’ve impulse bought!!

Sunshineo · 26/12/2025 14:52

For 2025 I vowed to only be able to use money that I made on vinted for spending on fashion and beauty which worked well as I was motivated to clear out what I no longer used and think carefully about what I wanted/needed.

I’m going to continue to do that although found that I wanted/needed much less as the year went on.

Brianthepug · 26/12/2025 15:22

Im in. My wardrobe is actually groaning at the seams.🙉. I have taken over the spare room and now my daughters wardrobe ( she's living abroad currently) because I have so much stuff. I have too many shoes...and make up. I REALLY REALLY don't need another thing. I have a voucher for a shopping centre and will purchase some bras, and that will be me done x
It's so tempting though as I love clothes and handbags. I have to stay out of Zara and Mango , my fave shops. 🤣. Im spending on travel this year.

SocksAndTheCity · 08/12/2025 22:35

That's it - thank you! Now I know what I'm doing on Sunday 😂

Sunday? By time Ive done mine, I'll see you in February....😳🥺🙈🙈🤣🤣

tbf a smart long wool coat would be very useful, I do have a perfectly good Barbour coat but I now work in a much smarter office.

I’m in! I think the last time I did a “no spend” year, it was 2016. From memory, I achieved it. It will be a good way of celebrating that 10 year anniversary! I’m a devotee of going “shopping in my wardrobe”, which sounds the same as what Whering is about, but without the technology. That suits me, I prefer to actually get the clothes off the rail, or out of the drawer & put them together. My posts will probably mainly be about what I’ve matched - if/when I feel particularly chuffed about a new combination & therefore outfit.

I will also be using up skincare products I have in the cupboard rather than buying new ones.

One thing I remember about my no spend 2016 - which was genuinely a year I needed to cut spending - was paying c£7 on a cheese in Waitrose as a reaction to having to tighten my belt on clothes & beauty products 😂.

WhitegreeNcandle · 26/12/2025 17:27

I like the idea of doing a no spend year every decade!

Right - that’s a fab idea, thank you.

ThisIsMyBurnerPhone · 26/12/2025 18:48

I’d love to join you. These are my rules.

I am ok to buy:

  • Food
  • Consumable goods
  • Replacement items
  • Experiences or holidays
  • Gifts for others
  • Meals out
  • One pair of wellies (needed!)

I am not going to buy:

  • Clothes
  • Home decor
  • Books
  • Wine

They are, but unfortunately I already have at least two dozen coats - I buy coats like some people buy shoes or bags 😂

But it's not January yet, I've had my eye on it for a while and for £40 I'll take the risk 👍

It’s great that there are a lot of us to share motivation and progress on no buy and low buys.

notnorman · 27/12/2025 12:25

do you keep a notepad of spending? Or an app?

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 27/12/2025 12:35

As it is still 2025

I bought some hair dye ( I do my own so it was £5 a box and it is maintenance rather than splashing out . I tried Going Grey Gracefully and it wasn't for me )

I'd ordered a dress(M&S sale ) and a top (dress for holidays , top was one I really liked , not on sale but what the heck)

Went out for a quick potter ( had things in town I needed to do) the shops weren't that busy
Many years ago I realised that the sales are rarely bargains unless it is something you've been stalking and you know the full value . The shops do put a load of tat out and the secret is not to fall for it !

I write in a paper diary or notebook what I've bought to keep tabs .

endofthecorridoor · 27/12/2025 14:01

I'm excited to try the app for your clothes . Such great ideas on the thread already. I'm also going to the library on Monday to order a book I nearly paid £6;on my kindle

Darklane · 27/12/2025 14:44

Please can I join.
I have far too much stuff, two double wardrobes ( one I can’t even get into for the stuff in front, another in the spare room & two coat rails in another room, all bulging.
I too can’t resist coats SocksAndTheCity
Last year I limited myself to one item a month…..well that was the plan, didn’t last 🙄
This year I’m determined….I am, I am, I am !!!
Now I just have to resist the urge to binge shop in the sales before the New Year actually starts ( as an excuse). Bit like eating up all the biscuits, chocolate, crisps before actually starting a diet ( guilty of it…me???) Or buying all the books that you’ve been recommending.
At least I’ve never gone on Vinted & the shops I used to love in my nearest town have all turned into Turkish barbers, vape shops & bars.
I have very little will power but far too much won’t power

I use the library app which has saved me a fortune. Books were one of my big spend categories although I argued with myself that reading is important while ignoring my to be read pile Wink

EveryDayisFriday · 28/12/2025 06:29

My rules going forward are 1 good quality very considered spend per month, I need some decent accessories. I do have a wish list, handbag and knee high leather boots. This month I will shop the sales for a decent leather holdall for the gym. My cheap gym bag is looking worse for wear, I'll take a measure of the lockers when I go later today.

Pineapples123 · 28/12/2025 08:26

Hello! I’d like to join please 😊 and also at massively reducing my screen time too! I’m hoping to buy a house this year so hopefully that will be a good motivation to stop buying clothes
