Really warm coat for cold, football mornings?

I'm looking for recommendations for a really warm coat for watching dd play football in the freezing mornings.

Does anyone recommend Dry Robes?

Thanks in advance

I wanted something less obviously dryrobey for general life than the dryrobe I use for swimming, and the Regatta 'dryrobe' waterproof (was on Amazon), in khaki, has been perfect. Wish I'd had one decades ago for football mornings.

Oodie coat - actually too warm sometimes. Think they are half price at the moment

Another vote for the Oodie coat.

Shorter than dryrobe (perfect for a 5'nothing like myself)
Super soft pockets so I don't always bother with gloves and the pockets do the job!

Didriksons

Happyjoe · 08/12/2025 01:13

I bought a long puffa from fatface in the sale last year, it's the warmest coat I've ever owned but not waterproof. But the best thing I like about it is I can chuck it in the washing machine, plonk on the radiator and it's dry in a couple days and it has looked like new each time.

fiorentina · 08/12/2025 03:12

I have a Rains puffer. Totally waterproof and warm. I wear with Uniqlo heat tech layers including thermal socks

IReallyNeedThisToWork · 08/12/2025 06:43

The Oodie long ‘puffer’ jacket is bliss!

I have no idea why my reply was hidden!
It's from Trespass a DLX brand called Wilma.
@mumsnet care to explain yourselves?!

I’ve had posts hidden randomly in the past when I’ve linked to Trespass! What have they ever done to MN?!

Silverbirchleaf · 08/12/2025 07:12

The trick to keeping warm is haters, so buy done thermals to wear under your clothes.

Also, don’t forget your feet. Wear waterproof walking shoes, or lined boots, and walking socks, preferably wool based.

Must have offended them pretty badly!

Regatta seems to do one extra-warm waterproof jacket each year. I think it's this one this year 250gsm insulation instead of 180gsm in others: https://www.regatta.com/womens-marron-waterproof-insulated-jacket-grey/

I bought the extra-warm version a few years ago and it's my Big Coat that comes out just for the coldest times of year. There is always a lot of Regatta on outlet sites, so you may find different colours and styles in the heavy weight insulation by shopping around. I think at the time I bought mine, they were just callng it 'extra-warm'; the insulation weight is relatively new, so try both key word searches if interested.

morbidcuriosity · 08/12/2025 15:50

Heated gilet. Between £20 - £100 on amazon. I got mine for £37 and I love it.. Nice and toasty.

User28425 · 08/12/2025 19:20

When I did my research on dry robes, I discovered many aren't even waterproof. Dry Robes, Saltrock, and Red were, and Two Bare Feet I think, and some of the Regatta and Mountain Warehouse but not all of them. I got one from Red, it was on the more expensive side, but totally waterproof without being too plasticky feeling like Regatta. It also has a pocket for a hot water bottle. I almost regret it because it is too warm for autumn and spring, but I used it then for wild swimming and now it is useful for standing around at football training/matches.

Fdsew · 08/12/2025 19:50

The longer the better, with high winter wellies with a thick soft insole.
I bought a long down Fenn wright puffa coat 20 years ago with a large hood. It was like being in a sleeping bag, incredibly cosy at the side of a wide open wild pitch.
It transformed the experience.
Definitely go for a dark colour, mud splatters and all that. I foolishly went for a deep beige🙄idiot.

I have a Lands End puffer long coat that I bought 20 years ago, it still looks like new, I get loads of compliments and it withstood a -40 South Dakota winter storm without issue. The newer designs are slimmer fit but excellent quality that last for years. Highly recommend.

sgtmajormum · 08/12/2025 20:27

My son is U16s and been playing since U6s
So i have many years of freezing my backside off on the pitchlines under my belt.
I bought a full length Landsend Squall coat 10 years ago. Its still going strong.
Plus is its waterproof AND warm!
Add on a pair of thermal wellies and a coffee/tea and a wooly hat/gloves from woolovers *lambswool so super warm and golf umbrella you will be nice and toasty and dry.
If it gets bitter then a wrap around hot water bottle (cheap as chips off amazon) will be a good addition.
Happy football mumming 😆

If you don’t want to become a Dry Robe Wanker:

If you go for a Dry Robe I’d recommend not going for the Final Boss edition of Camo and Hot Pink. Do you want Camo or be seen - which one is it?? 🤣🤣🤣 #oxymoron

I have this one in black!! Look on m&m direct, I’m sure they still stock them. Or mountain warehouse.

Toohardtofindaproperusername · 08/12/2025 21:54

Dry robes are amazing. Thoroughly recommend .....

I have it in green from M&M Direct! They have about 6 colours in almost all sizes for £40. It was a total bargain.

TwinklyMoose · 08/12/2025 23:10

Not sure if already recommended as haven’t read whiole thread but Rains do a waterproof puffer which I bought for the exact same reason. Warm, waterproof and I think looks quite stylish, (says me!). It has seen me through dog walks rugby pitches driving rain and freezing cold :). My kids have dry robes for after sports but I find them a bit swishy and cumbersome

Balloonhearts · 08/12/2025 23:35

Be an Equidry wanker instead. They're amazing and have all the pockets. Even the pocket zips are waterproof.

Lasnailinthecoffin · 09/12/2025 00:03

I bought a down coat from Mountain Warehouse online, with exÌŒtra discount. It's stylish, has a great hood and finishes just below the knees. I'm taking it to Norway at Christmas (200 miles inside the arctic circle at Tromso). With ski trousers and waterproof hiking boots, plus lined hat and gloves, I should just about be warm enough. Also, as it's padded, it should protect me if I fall over in the snow and ice!

wibdib · 09/12/2025 01:35

I got DH a Didrikson anorak for watching ds1 play rugby in the cold when his old one finally needed to be replaced. It was after a recommendation on here and I looked into them - they did what he wanted, had plenty of pockets both internal and external plus places to put your hands to warm and put phones, ski passes, little nits of reflector on so headlights will catch them etc and it’s a brand from Sweden or similar, so rated to keep you warm in crazy cold weather and dry in crazy wet rain too. I stalked the brand for a bit to get familiar with that they had and how it fit with what he needed and was lucky enough to spot that one of the coats was being phased out to be replaced with the new model - which was £200 more expensive, in a colour he didn’t want and had rounded pocket flaps rather than squared ones (an inconsequential detail, certainly not worth paying extra £££s for!

The other thing I bought him years ago which he was very sceptical about were some soft lined waterproof winter walking trousers which he thought were a waste of time but actually made a massive difference and got worn at rugby and football matches and training every week from late autumn to Easter. They were from Go Outdoors on the sale so didn’t cost much but were so well loved and dh actually bought some for himself steer a few years that were trousers for the very deepest winter, so that he could use them if he was day driving and didn’t want to overheat in the car but could put them on when needed. Lots of the other parents ended up getting similar things over the y years, which again to show how worthwhile they were as an investment in your thermal comfort.

Tammygirl12 · 09/12/2025 20:37

How much is the budget? I have a finisterre one that’s amazing. Fully waterproof and very very warm

CurlewKate · 09/12/2025 20:39

I had a Landsend Stadium coat. I’m still wearing it 16 years later!
