Really warm coat for cold, football mornings?

footiemamm · 06/12/2025 11:26

I'm looking for recommendations for a really warm coat for watching dd play football in the freezing mornings.

Does anyone recommend Dry Robes?

Thanks in advance

I had to return mine as it came to the floor on me! So I would advise anyone to check the measurements first.

Fair point - I am 5'7!

Another vote for Didriksons. I have really lousy blood circulation, it slows right down in low temperatures. My Didriksons actually keeps me really warm, even my hands stay warm instead of shrivelled up, icy and pale. I have to put it on as I'm going out the door as I get too hot in the hall wearing it!

outofofficeagain · 07/12/2025 08:27

I also have a Didrikson which is great for every day - but standing on a touchline is a particular type of cold and dry robe is justified.

Simonjt · 07/12/2025 08:32

Didriksons are very good, however if you’re stood outside your feet are as important, if you’re wearing unsuitable footwear it doesn’t matter how good your coat is. You either need properly insulated footwear, or take a foam matt to stand on to keep you off the ground.

BastardtheCat · 07/12/2025 08:41

I have the £125 Lands End Dry Robe. Its incredible.

The exact one is on Vinted right now for £50 brand new!! A Navy one.

Sickoffamilydrama · 07/12/2025 09:59

I have Beaufort Green Changing Robe | Green Robe Coat | D Robe – Delta Roam https://deltaroam.com/products/beaufort-robe-drgreenBeaufort this bought for dog walking after lots of researching, has loads of pockets and a good hood and properly waterproof.
Only negative is wide arms but the wrists are adjustable.

It's the best coat I've owned DD has got into Rugby this year and I've been warm and dry in the lashing sideways rain, a lot of pitches are really exposed aren't they.

In fact about to get ready to take her and it's going to be raining all day but I know I'll be fine.

Sickoffamilydrama · 07/12/2025 10:01

Not sure why my link is weird but still working so 🤷‍♀️

Matildahoney · 07/12/2025 10:05

I have no idea why my reply was hidden!
It's from Trespass a DLX brand called Wilma.
@mumsnet care to explain yourselves?!

TheChosenTwo · 07/12/2025 10:09

Oh this is a handy thread, dh has asked
if I might come to one of ds winter matches and I’m permanently cold even indoors so was wondering pondering what to wear.
i do have a dry robe (because I swim outdoor all year round, it’s very handy) so I thought it might do. I also have neoprene lined wellies which are actually too hot to wear usually which is a shame as they were revoltingly expensive, but think they’d be perfect for this.
But I never considered things that were heated underneath or even a hot water bottle so great ideas, thanks everyone for sharing your tips.

North face arctic parka, very pricey but lasts years, almost too warm for long walks but toasty if you're sitting around

This was always my football watching coat, with salopettes if I was really desperate 😂, I struggle with the cold. It is totally waterproof too.

CatherineCawoodsbestie · 07/12/2025 10:19

It depends how much you feel the cold.
I am a freezer, and I don’t find the Seasalt Janelle or dry robe warm enough. They work for mild, wet days, but for not if they are cold. I have tried them with a Uniqlo padded jacket underneath but nope.

Agree with North Face Artic Parker but they are heavy, (so are the dry robes).

My best bet for very cold and wet is not attractive….. soft shell trousers (mine come from a Canadian brand and are super), if very wet then waterproof trousers too as the trousers are only water resistant) and then a decent outdoor brand jacket and waterproof jacket on top.

verybighouseinthecountry · 06/12/2025 19:58

Seasalt Janelle.

I agree.

Warm, windproof, waterproof, mud seems to just fall off it when it's dried, plenty of pockets, sturdy zips - what's not to like?

seasalt janelle coat

Mine's at least 7 years old now, and still as good as new. And although the long one is described as "knee length", I'm 5'6" and it comes to halfway down my shins.

I invested in the Superdry longline - about £120 and I will wear it for life. It’s unbelievable.

I have a suprdry padded coat too. Not long, just a waist length one. Last time i walked the dog in it i got too warm and had to take it off! Definitely does the job. Hood stays up too but unlike other coats I have, doesn't flop over my eyes.

I'd have never bought what I see as a trendy sports brand but my relative washed it and it shrank so I were given it. Very glad!

herbalteabag · 07/12/2025 16:16

My football spectating days are over now, but I found that having cold feet was the worst thing of all. If my feet were warm, I was fine.

YRGAM · 07/12/2025 17:41

sansou · 06/12/2025 17:51

I would reccommend Didricksons - mine is about a decade old but is similar to this or this

Wait another 2 weeks and I suspect that you have much more choice at Jan sale prices.

Another vote for Didriksons, I wear it in Finland every winter and it does the job down to minus 10 and below

Keepoffmyartichokes · 07/12/2025 17:57

Not a jacket but fur lined Dr Martens have been a life saver. My feet stay super warm in them, worth every penny.

JungAtHeart · 07/12/2025 18:10

I have a dryrobe but it is literally for after my morning sea swim … I couldn’t imagine wearing it as a coat 😂 For cold days - I live near the beach so take a walk in pretty much all weathers - I think you’d go a long way to beat a Helly Hansen ski jacket. I just bought a ‘new to me’ one for £20 including p&p

Hankunamatata · 07/12/2025 18:22

Regatta dry robe. Long, warm and not heavy or bulky

Ange59 · 07/12/2025 18:41

I have a GILL Robe - it's fab

I wear this one for my son's ice hockey which is FREEZING. I have the navy one and, as well as being incredibly warm, it is also surprisingly flattering.

Skating mum here too. Nothing is warm enough if you sit in an ice rink for hours. The only thing that works is heated clothing. The ones with power banks. You can get heated coats, trousers and gloves.

Being outdoor for football, you need to worry about wind and rain too.

heaveho · 07/12/2025 19:48

Didriksons Stella
It’s the warmest coat I’ve ever owned. Fab investment 🔥

I have this jacket and its very warm.

TestingTestingWonTooFree · 07/12/2025 22:32

I have a few Landsend coats including the stadium squall and they’re all good. Layering up on the bottom is good too, I like fleece lined leggings with waterproof trousers on top.

ChiliFiend · 07/12/2025 22:43

I have this - it's the warmest coat I've ever owned; like wearing a warm blanket (and it's got a proper hood that stays up as it should):

https://www.uniqlo.com/uk/en/products/E469898-000/00?colorDisplayCode=09&sizeDisplayCode=003

I've also just bought some electric hand warmers for watching football after someone recommended them (not tried them yet).
