Hairdressers over charging

Hi Ladies
I went to the hairdressers yesterday and had a full head of highlights, wash cut and blow dry with the same stylist I had previously. Last time I was charged £234 and this time she said that will be £262. I just paid and left. I decided to go back and out later to query the price as I felt ripped off. I was told the price increase was due to added time it took her. I then stated that I had the exact same last time and on the website it's £234 for what I had done so it doesn't make any sense. After going back and forth they spoke to the manager and refunded me £40. Its put me off going back now. Just wanted to see if anyone else has had these sneaky added charges? I just hate going to the hairdressers as its expensive enough now and they don't seem to be transparent with the prices.

Last week:

£140 for t-section with lowest level stylist (£65 of which is toner).
£76 for cut.

The card machine is set to default to add 5% tip which you have to press several buttons to opt out of. No colour without either cut or blowdry (£57) added.

Surely card machines are never ‘set’ to automatically add a tip? Shock

Well, they give you the terminal and on the touch screen there are 2 buttons pre-set for tip percentages and one which says Custom amount. At the bottom of all of these is a toggle which is set to on and it says 5% service charge. So even if you choose the custom button and then zero, they still charge 5% service charge. To turn it all off you need to toggle off the 5% and then choose custom and then zero.

I am in Yorkshire, and pay about £75 for full head highlights, toner, cut and blow dry. I go to an amazing hairdresser who works from home. She is amazingly good. I’ve had loads of different styles and colours, and she always can deliver on what I ask for, or offer solutions for how something else might work better with my hair type and face shape. I accept she’s at the cheaper end of the scale, but some of the prices people on this thread are paying are absolutely ridiculous. Over the years I’ve been to much more expensive salons, who were frankly shite in comparison and I can’t help but have the feeling you’re paying for the fancy salon rather than the skill of the stylist.

I had this. Came to pay and she said same as last time, great I thought paid and then added a tip. Remembered last time total amount included tip as paid by bank transfer so yes I do think they make up the prices! So I double tipped essentially. Didn’t go back, it felt too casual for me.

If you paid by bank transfer maybe they’re avoiding tax too?

£12 per trim every 8 weeks . Thin simple hair

JoBrandsCleaner · 15/03/2026 10:09

I have had this years ago. I’d gone to a place for the first time for a straightening treatment. It was all alright but I hadn’t wanted it cut, she just kept going on and in the end said she’ll just give it a tiny trim. It cost more then I’d thought it was going to and then I realised, she’d added the cost of a cut and blow dry onto it!

I honestly don’t know how they get away with charging rip off prices, I know they have overheads but literally charging more than £100 an hour to cut or colour people’s hair is shocking, it’s hardly heart surgery which is a real skill!
