Hairdressers over charging

Hi Ladies
I went to the hairdressers yesterday and had a full head of highlights, wash cut and blow dry with the same stylist I had previously. Last time I was charged £234 and this time she said that will be £262. I just paid and left. I decided to go back and out later to query the price as I felt ripped off. I was told the price increase was due to added time it took her. I then stated that I had the exact same last time and on the website it's £234 for what I had done so it doesn't make any sense. After going back and forth they spoke to the manager and refunded me £40. Its put me off going back now. Just wanted to see if anyone else has had these sneaky added charges? I just hate going to the hairdressers as its expensive enough now and they don't seem to be transparent with the prices.

over 200 pounds for hair is ridiculous.go somewhere else. I pay 20 pounds for cut and blow dry and think that's expensive.

Why do you think this is expensive? You’re paying for someone’s skill, training, time, rent/bills(unless they’re mobile), fuel if they’re mobile, products etc. £20 is a bargain! Most of these hairdressers charging prices like that will not be making minimum wage which is just crazy🤯

Djsmith23 · 07/12/2025 21:51

Im a hairdresser and a millennial and think the ridiculous amount some charge is ruining our industry. I totally understand coving overheads, eg rent, products, colour, bleach, specialist treatments & your time but £234 for a full head of foils including cut & finish is ridiculous. Where abouts are you?
i charge a maximum £90 and still cover everything.

beadystar · 07/12/2025 21:55

Hard agree. I’m not going back to mine because it’s another 20 quid every time. She’s good but charged me €230 for colour, a tiny trim and a basic blow dry. Who can justify that? I know my colour/brand and planning to do it myself and go to the local girl for a trim if needed. She’s lost a solid customer through greed.

Alice786 · 07/12/2025 21:57

This is exactly what I’ve been saying. People should know the costs upfront it's a significant amount, and it’s completely reasonable to expect transparency. They often add extras without telling you beforehand, which is really frustrating. We need to be more firm and ask beforehand to make sure they tell us about any extras so they can’t later act ignorant.

Hey everyone , this is really interesting reading all your experiences. Im in SE London so it's generally quite pricey although the salon I go to is one of the most expensive in the area but I've always had a good experience and a good result. Im not usually confrontational but feel like they were taking the piss and it doesn't state extra time on the website and she wasn't any longer than last time as she did the exact same thing. She also did a lot better job last time so I will definitely be finding another salon.

I paid £300 in a home salon in Kent - was gobsmacked tbh

Drachuughtty · 07/12/2025 22:16

Crikey, my cut is barely above £20, you lot are all being overcharged!

wow! Im also a home salon & wouldn’t dream of it!

Aussiegold · 07/12/2025 22:21

£260 8 weeks ago for half head highlights, tint, trim, olaplex and blow dry, expensive but I liked what I had done......this week £316! Queried it and got told it will be cheaper in the new year and cheaper at the beginning of the week not the end.

I'm still in shock.

ALittleDropOfRain · 07/12/2025 22:22

I pay €48 for my son and I to go to a home salon. I have thick curly hair, he has a fascinating parting that throws hair in all directions and hair that would be curly if long. She cuts his hair to last 8 weeks so we don’t have to travel out so often. Last time, she gave me free advice on low maintenance ways to hide the increasing grey (I was prepared to pay her to put a product on and had texted to say so).

She‘s been cutting my son‘s hair since he was 4 and is just amazing.

Netcam · 07/12/2025 22:24

That's so expensive. DH and I do each other's. I don't think either of us look any worse for it.

mondaytosunday · 07/12/2025 22:33

Only once. I tried a new stylist and she convinced me to get my hair coloured there as it was ‘too much a block of colour’ me dying it at home. So I splurged and made an appointment. When got there it wasn’t her but someone else snd she said ‘so just an all over colour then’ and I was like, no, the whole idea was to add highlights and low lights to break it up. She said she didn’t really have time for that. So I got the all over colour, for £200, no different than the £10 box dye. Never returned, but I wish I had spoken up and said that wasn’t what had been discussed so I would reschedule when she did have time.

YYURYYUCICYYUR4ME · 07/12/2025 23:36

I gave up with 'fancy salon' hair cutters, when I paid £60 a few year's back for a 5 minute trim, a bit of fluffing up and the hair washer then being tasked with drying my hair and making a hamfisted job of it! Now I pay £22, for a great hairdresser, local salon, for a dry cut and she gets on and does this in 15 minutes. She trained decades ago, knows her trade and miles better than anything locally, all of which I tried! Hairdressing costs are off the scale now like so much lately. I know costs have risen, but I now work out prices on how many hours minimum wage it takes to earn the price and can't equate someone having to work 10 hours for a haircut!

OneAmberHedgehog · 07/12/2025 23:57

I can't believe some of these posts, seems good honest hairdressers are so hard to find. I remember once years back I decided to try the one right opposite where I lived as they had an offer on their website that first time clients receive 20% off. I didn't get the 20% off and went back to which she replied that excludes the whole of December and this was not displayed anywhere on the website. Its terrible what some of them get away with.

My hairdresser is always increasing her prices due to cost of living but honestly I don’t think she’s good enough for her current prices. I quite often have to get my hair corrected cause she hasn’t listened to me properly, at high prices I’m only going to expect perfection as opposed to tolerances for her usual faffing.

It’s annoying because I am busy with work & a fairly high earner, I’ll keep going to her as it’s easy. I just don’t have the headspace to find a new salon, get colour tests and consultations, just to end up with hair that may not come out any better.

KmcK87 · 08/12/2025 05:08

The last 3 times I’ve been to the hairdresser I’ve been charged more than the original quote and met with blank stares when I’ve pointed it out and told I was simply quoted wrong. And I’ve not been overly impressed with the service either, it’s as if they do what they feel like doing on your hair, not what you ask for.
Feel like too many of them have been watching TikTok’s telling them to up their prices and “charge their worth” without actually having the skill behind them to justify their prices.

I’ve now gone back to using box dye.

ive had this too yes. At my hairdressers down a little street in Oxford

I think you might go to the same hairdressers as me. They get annoyed because I can only go once per year, but it’s now over £300 for cut and balayage. I need to find somewhere cheaper.

pilates · 08/12/2025 05:35

Op, that is disgraceful - hope you didn’t tip.

Find another salon.

I don’t tip anymore because of their exorbitant prices.

Riversidegirl · 08/12/2025 05:39

£120 for three colour full head highlights and a wet trim. Charged £80 as she was new to salon and was building up clients. Gave a £10 tip as it was a great job. Will go back in new year.

Nopenousername · 08/12/2025 07:15

Yes, me. Made appt at my regular salon and was quoted a price incl toner. Didn’t have the toner done but when it came to paying the receptionist insisted that I had to pay what I had been quoted! So I did and needless to say I have not been back

OneAmberHedgehog · 08/12/2025 07:39

I used to have a toner and then found out one day the toner was actually an extra £40 but they never mentioned that. That's terrible they should have definitely took that off the price if you didn't even get the toner. I used to always give a tip but the prices are constantly increasing so I dont bother anymore.

Colour always requires a cut or blow dry here. T-section plus cut from a junior is always over £200 now. They’re booked months in advance.

AngelinaFibres · 08/12/2025 07:53

My hairdresser charges 25. 00 for a trim and 75 for half a head of foils and a cut and blowdry. That appointment takes 1.5 hours. The prices on here are crazy

Nothingbutstress · 08/12/2025 08:03

Yes hairdressers can be a total rip off! I remember going to a posh one last year, I had already pre paid. Then after they added on an extra charge for long hair (my hair is not super long!) and extra £35 for the toner. By the end I must’ve paid at least £230. And the worst part is that my hair looked bang average like they’d hardly changed the colour 😂Since then I’ve been somewhere else and it’s cost £120 and looked better. Some hairdressers absolutely take the piss!
