Hairdressers over charging

Hi Ladies
I went to the hairdressers yesterday and had a full head of highlights, wash cut and blow dry with the same stylist I had previously. Last time I was charged £234 and this time she said that will be £262. I just paid and left. I decided to go back and out later to query the price as I felt ripped off. I was told the price increase was due to added time it took her. I then stated that I had the exact same last time and on the website it's £234 for what I had done so it doesn't make any sense. After going back and forth they spoke to the manager and refunded me £40. Its put me off going back now. Just wanted to see if anyone else has had these sneaky added charges? I just hate going to the hairdressers as its expensive enough now and they don't seem to be transparent with the prices.

Everything now seems to be becoming unaffordable. Food, hairdressers, utility etc.
I dont know if its because of all the pressures on small businesses ( you wouldnnt believe it especially if they have to pay wages).
But i actually cant cut my own hair, im rubbish.
Im assuming the south is much deerer.
I pay roughly between 110 and 150 for was cut, highlights and blow dry

I always get this. They usually say they’ve put on a treatment or something to justify it and to be fair I do have thick hair and I am someone who will spend at the salon but it’s annoying never to know how much you will be charged when you arrive. Once they start bumping it up too much I start going somewhere else for a while and then when I return it’s usually at the lower price again for a while..

theressomanytinafeysicouldbe · 08/12/2025 08:18

My last was full head with highlights @ £145, took her nearly 5 hours, will not be going back.

I am going to grow old gracefully I think and embrace the grey, just go in for a trim every now and again, although I never like the way they cut it any more. I always ask for layers and they cut it deadly straight across then a few layers but really long one - I want a Rachel cut from the 90s lol

ZenNudist · 08/12/2025 08:40

I pay £70 for a cut and 3 colours full head foils plus blow.

Mobile hairdresser was costing me £100 ish in salon 10 years ago. £234 is outrageous. I hate the way they abandon you at the backwash and tell you to relax. I havebad neck so can't lie back with wethair for ages.

Mariammaom · 08/12/2025 08:46

I pay £60 for a wash & cut in a London salon. It takes her about 40 mins.

Twinkletwinkly · 08/12/2025 08:55

This thread has been an eye opener for me. I had no idea of the cost of colouring etc. It’s mind boggling. I’ve never had my hair coloured and haven’t had a perm since my mullet in the early 1980’s. That was a sight to behold 😂

I pay £20 for a dry cut every 6 weeks to keep my pixie cut in shape.

uhtredofbattenberg · 08/12/2025 08:57

Find another hairdressers, that's a lot of money.

DriveVerySlowlyPastNumber23IWantThemToSeeMyHat · 08/12/2025 09:02

I once paid £20 in cash and was stood waiting for my £5 change after having my hair curled. The hairdresser thanked me for my tip and said goodbye!

I didn't have the balls to explain I was waiting for my change. And the worst bit? I hated it 😂

BeaLola · 08/12/2025 09:03

I'm staggered at these prices.

I used to have a wash cut and blow dry near to where I work but could only go on a non workday due to hours hairdresser worked - I paid £40, tbh I went for the cut and not the blow dry but they don't offer wet or dry cut , didn't like the blow dry as it was too flat/not how I like it . After tip and parking I was paying nearly £60 . I then decided to try the little 1 woman salon in next village - have a wet cut £20 and it's a god cut

LemonLeaves · 08/12/2025 09:08

I used to go to a really good colouring place. They did a great job, very skilled staff who took their time so I know why it was expensive as it took forever. But when the cost started getting close to £300 I couldn't justify spending this much, especially as my hair grows quite quickly. A toner refresh was £50 on its own.

I go twice a year now to a local place - which is a traditional hairdresser still doing perms, rinses, blow drys. It costs me £39 for a cut and blow dry, and I can be in and out in 40 minutes. I box dye my own hair now. The colouring place did a better job as it was all different tones and shades worked in, but the box dye is less than a tenner.

OneAmberHedgehog · 08/12/2025 09:19

Yes think most of automatically expect a tip regardless. Im actually thinking of going back today as doesn't look as good as she did it last time. Over £200 down and not as blonde as I like it.

I've never been that happy with a salon visit it's so hit and miss. I see a independent hairdresser. She was mobile but now is in a salon just her so it's a lovely private atmosphere too. It's around £80 to £100 depending on what I'm having done. I'm having grey blending highlights/ lowlights and toning. She follows my natural hair pattern so more work than normal highlights.
Cut,Blow-dry and style afterwards so I'm happy to pay more for a good reliable result and I can happily go longer between appointments.

Shambles123 · 08/12/2025 09:39

God, this thread is making me so grateful for my hairdressers! SE but not London, £165 for half head, root tap, cut and blow dry. I go 3-4 times a year.

GlitzAndGigglesx · 08/12/2025 09:46

I'd cry paying that for my hair. My hairdresser is mobile and charged £50 for for low lights, a root colour plus a cut and blow dry with curls at the beginning of the year. I absolutely loved it. NE England

honeylulu · 08/12/2025 10:06

Some of the prices are crazy.
I use a box dye on mine as its one colour. I've had it done at the hairdressers and it didn't look any different so went back to doing it myself.

The 2 hairdressers closest to me both take cash only and dont advertise a price list. Prices I've been charged for the same sort of trim have varied wildly up and down so now I check when I book and re-check on the day.

I always hate the blow dry so tell them to leave it wet or just give it a quick blast. Last time I forgot to remind her and was daydreaming before I realised she was half way through the blow dry and then I got charged an extra 30. I've got a wide squarish face and she dried it with all the layers flicked inwards in a box shape. I looked like Evil Edna the television set from Willo the Wisp.

The thing that annoys me most is when you want a simple trim of the ends of very straight hair you can't get a basic "barber" service for £15. (My son who has long straight hair gets exactly that. ) Its all ladies salon prices, long hair surcharge etc etc. Pink tax penalty!

Summerishere123 · 08/12/2025 10:15

Im looking for a new hairdresser at the moment. Mine was charging me £300+ For colour moving from red to blond. She said it was because it was colour correction but the last time I went it was just blonde she still charged me £300. Im now looking elsewhere!

winterblueshitting · 08/12/2025 10:17

I paid £72 to go from blonde to brunette. £140 every two months for extension move ups.

AlpineMuesli · 08/12/2025 07:43

Colour always requires a cut or blow dry here. T-section plus cut from a junior is always over £200 now. They’re booked months in advance.

Oh toner is £60 extra.

That’s outrageously expensive…!

I have curly hair and after they've spent ages with a fine tooth comb cutting it there's no way it'll clump back into curls to dry nicely so I don't want a blow dry but the fuss they make over it is too embarrassing so I just let them dry it straight then wash it the next day. I don't know whether they genuinely need to dry it to check lengths, don't want me walking out of the salon looking undone, or just want the additional price.

When I used to wear it straightened and all one length I wanted 6 inch cutting off - from lower back to bra strap and she said if I wanted that it'd be extra £40 for a 'restyle'. I did argue but then said just trim it and never went back.

theriseandfallofFranklinSaint · 08/12/2025 12:34

I cannot believe some of these prices! 😲

It would be cheaper for you lot in London to travel up North and use our hairdressers! I pay £56 for highlights and my roots - I'm in there for nearly 3 hours as I have A LOT of hair!

ChristmasHug · 08/12/2025 12:36

Also I'm looking for a new hairdresser because a cut and blow dry from mine is now over £100.

HOWEVER she has recently qualified for ridiculously complicated colour work so I do understand she's charging for her time.

I am sad, I like the way she cuts it.

Summerhillsquare · 08/12/2025 12:38

I used Treatwell last time and got a cut and blow dry same day in Manchester for £33, he did a great job and got a £7 tip!

ReignOfError · 08/12/2025 12:50

After some shopping around following a move a couple of years back, I’ve finally found an excellent hairdresser. I’ve honestly never had so many compliments about my hair. I tested her with a couple of trims (£20) and then had a full restyle/blowdry this time (£24). Little backstreet salon that is nothing to look at, and a bit tatty inside, but clean, friendly and they understand curly hair.

I think a lot of hairdressers struggle with cutting curls. I went through loads, who would just cut straight across or try and put layers in, or who would mess up the front making the curls grow sideways.

I moved to my current hairdresser after asking a colleague with curly hair where she went. Sabrina cuts dry, and cuts into the curl structure rather than viewing my hair as a single unit. She makes sure certain curls keep the weight they need to not spring up and go wild. There‘s a real art to it.
