Thank you Lunde, I don’t have Aftonbladet premium so couldn’t see. All opinions are subjective aren’t they? I think Victoria’s is more interesting but I also think it’s not quite interesting enough to compensate for it being a pain to wear 😂 god imagine how easy it is to drop something down that open top!

Should we post the menu?

DH got a subscription that gives us access to the premium content of multiple newspapers which is why I get Aftonbladet

I love that Victoria takes risks sometimes and wears unusual outfits - even though I think it is a technically a breach of protocol to wear an honour sash against bare skin

I love Madeleine's silver gown with the aquamarine tiara - she really works the "fairy tale princess" look

I'm not sure that a yellow shade really suits Queen Silvia - the beading is impressive though

banivani · 10/12/2025 21:49

That’s why I have Expressen 😂

I think at her age Silvia can get away with any colour. Like QE2! I loved the yellow dress. Madeleine’s is nicer in movement, I caught a bit on the telly and the whole think comes alive then. It doesn’t look as impressive in the photos. I enjoy Victoria’s daring sense of fashion, she’s so clearly using her position to say something and stand out. I think Madeleine’s dress is a reflection of her in a way safer style but also deliberately chosen to not be too extravagant and steal the show. Smart, all of it.

I'm actually glad they pass on the dresses, even if it's not my favourite.

I'd love to see the British royals recycle some of the old evening gowns - the Queen had some wonderful evening gowns in the 1940s/50s.

Yes, the only one I've seen reworn was by Beatrice on her wedding day.

I felt a bit sorry for Beatrice in that dress. It was horrid.

Maireas · 10/12/2025 23:03

Why feel sorry for Beatrice? It was a vintage Norman Hartnell dress, owned and previously worn by the late Queen. Beatrice also had the loan of Queen Mary's Fringe Tiara, worn by Queen Elizabeth on her wedding day.

RuncibleSpoons · 10/12/2025 23:30

I think because she got married during the pandemic and maybe didn’t have the wedding (nor) dress she might otherwise have chosen. There was definitely an air of ‘make do and mend’ about it.

I thought it was a horrible dress.

I doubt the PoW could wear anything that was worn by QE2 - the height difference is too great. I suspect Bea is the only one of the younger generation tiny enough to fit something made for Elizabeth ii.

Chesticles · 10/12/2025 23:35

I really love CPVs dress above. And the 80s were an awful era fashion wise. Just shows how subjective thing are.

I also liked Beatrice’s wedding dress though the added 4 inch hem wasn’t great. Maybe I like recycled things. I wore my grandmothers cape at my wedding!

But if she had wanted a big wedding she could have waited until restrictions were lifted. And there was nothing to stop her having a new dress even at the height of covid she could have had something made. She made the choice to wear what she wore so she obviously loved it.

Pallisers · 10/12/2025 23:48

I love seeing the dresses recycled. I sometimes worry about all those lovely clothes carefully preserved but unworn. What do you think has happened to Queen Mary's fantastic evening dresses? But I worry more about the unworn jewels so if they start on this they need to start on the jewels first :)

But I really didn't like Bea's choice for her wedding - or the alterations she made. She looked lovely but there were better vintage QE2 dresses she could have chosen imo.

Maireas · 11/12/2025 05:49

Well, it was obviously her choice. She certainly had the money and the means to have the dress she wanted, it's not as if there was rationing! I wouldn't feel sorry for her.

Beatrice's wedding dress is one of my favourites. Romantic, yet not a frothy cliche. I also think it was in keeping with the more boho side to her style that we sometimes see.

I'm in two minds about CP Victoria's Nobel dress. From the right angle it's great, but I don't think I can really get on board with these very stiff, sculptural bodices - as banivani says, a nuisance to wear and unless the fit is perfect they too easily look like the clumsy, stiff constructions they are as soon as the wearer moves or sits or stands in not quite the right pose...
Silvia's/Victoria's definitely makes the case for dumping the sashes though.

Cassiope · 11/12/2025 07:52

As for the politician in the pink dress - she looks like a gift-wrapped present wearing Marigolds. I won't be sorry when the concept of evening gloves disappears altogether.

eggandonion · 11/12/2025 08:24

Queen Elizabeth was very small in terms of height and very slim when she was young. Her Angela Kelly clothes were a very specific style. But it is sad that they are all mothballed...but I don't know who else could wear them.
There must be masses of Queen Mary jewels waiting for an outing. I wonder what happened her fabulous clothes. And the Queen Mother's frothy chiffon. Fashion students could play around with some old outfits.

deeahgwitch · 11/12/2025 09:25

In that photo of Silvia that@Lunde posted wearing the dress CPV wore at the Nobel Prize event, you can see just how like her mother Madeleine is.

bluegreygreen · 11/12/2025 09:47

I like the drama of CPV's dress but I think if you're going to wear a sash it should be worn properly, not half hidden - so accept it will spoil the look or change the dress,

Funnily enough, I've always thought that Sofia looks more like a young Silvia than either of her daughters!

Princess Caroline inaugurating a library, with her daughter, Charlotte Casiraghi.
She's wearing a grey Dries Van Noten trouser suit, the trousers a bit too baggy for my liking. Oh yes, and the jacket is double breasted 😊.
I like Charlotte's outfit.

Charlotte looks fab. She's a very stylish woman imho.
Caroline very nearly looks fab, but as you say @Maireas, it's all just a touch too baggy.

Maireas · 11/12/2025 14:39

Both women are usually both very chic. I like the way that Caroline is ageing gracefully, and letting her hair go grey.

OP posts:
KiIIingMeDeftly · 11/12/2025 14:58

Caroline is the epitome of ageing gracefully but it probably helps that she was very beautiful to begin with! I like their suits and presume Charlotte's is Chanel.
