After many years together DP and I are getting married.
It’s literally just us and our two older teenagers in the registry office. No guests and no party or anything afterwards ( we don’t think. May decide to go out for celebratory drinks when we’ve finished). I’m mid 40’s. I’m neutral/ warmed toned with blonde hair and blue eyes. I’m not a massive fan of dressing up.

I’d like to wear a dress but ..

I’m very fat (24/26)
I’m a horrible shape. I have lipodema and really big cankles. This means anything other than a maxi dress is out of the question. I also can’t wear heels due to an ankle injury.

I’m fairly feminine I like nice hair/make-up/nails. I like pastels and flowers etc etc
Im going round in circles trying to find a dress or outfit to wear.
It needs to be very budget friendly. I’ll literally wear this dress or outfit for those few hours.
Can anyone please help? I’d prefer online shopping and trying on at home.
Many thanks if you can find this holy grail!
Ohh to add I’d like my arms covered as well and no slits up the side of the dress either)

What about having something made?
Perhaps a lovely jumpsuit with a long-length cardigan-like over garment (I haven't described this well at all) in gauze or lace?

ItsaMOBone · 19/11/2025 14:22

DDs have been bridesmaids and worn the Ever Pretty dresses.

i think they are made in china so they take a while to arrive and you will probably need to size up from your normal size. My normally size 12 daughter was a 14 in her ever pretty dress.

They are very thin but the material looks fine if you give it a good steam.

My daughter used some smoothing underwear/shape wear because the thin material shows every detail of what’s underneath including tummy button and pants! So you might want to factor that in. However, probably not a problem in the green lace dress you linked to.

And lastly congratulations!

CollsR · 19/11/2025 15:02

Congratulation! Even if you only wear it once and money is tight, you deserve to spend at least up to £150 on a wedding dress. Your DP could hire a suit to keep costs down.

Also, I think you should treat yourself and get your hair and make-up professionally done on the day, or at least your hair Maybe get some flowers put in your hair. Professional make-up looks good in photos. I'd also consider getting a photographer for a couple hours. You may feel self-conscience but in a few years I think you'll be very happy to have some lovely photos of your family on this day.

Also, the dresses being shared would be lovely for a wedding and okay for a nice restaurant. So maybe you will wear the dress again. You could wear it on your wedding anniversary if you go out to dinner.

Congrats again & I hope you enjoy the planning of this celebration. I'm planning a similar small wedding and I bought a cake topper on etsy. I'm going to buy a cake for £25 from a local bakery and have it at home with some prosecco at the end of the day. Going for lunch in the pub we had our first date after the wedding with just a couple friends.

That’s gorgeous! It’ll be an April wedding. Do you think it’s too wintery? I love the blush pink
option. I’m just worried all everyone will see is my horrid lumpy legs and wonder if I'm too
old to marry!
Thank you.

Nobody is ever, ever, too old to marry.

Eeekkk I know- but people will be looking at me. I honestly hate the thought of it. I know it sounds silly. I’m not a wallflower at all. I’m just SO self conscious of my horrible legs and arms. It’ll be fine and I’m feeling a lot more confident. The thought of standing on the stairs and passers-by seeing me makes me want to stay home and not go!

You have been nothing but gracious in this thread, OP, so you will be lovely on the day; in a state of grace. More beautiful than any dress. (Though I love a beautiful dress!)

PippiLongStockingsPigtails · 19/11/2025 21:45

Thank you all! Such a lovely lot of comments and positivity.
I imagine I’ll go for one of the ever pretty dresses. I love the one linked with the lace sleeves.
Maybe I’ll be brave enough to post a picture as well!
I would love my hair and makeup done professionally but budget wise it’s not feasible. Same with a photographer. My best friend has said she’ll happen to be in town at the time of the wedding and snap some pics! She’ll also happen to have some confetti on her as well. What are the chances eh?!
Truly thank you. I can’t believe how lovely this thread has been and how helpful!

That's because you're lovely, @PippiLongStockingsPigtails .

Doone22 · 20/11/2025 07:13

My first wedding I just bought a cocktail dress I saw in a charity shop. Electric blue velvet.
Second I ordered beautiful waterfall dress from Shein which was duck egg blue.
Loved both of them.

YouknowIknowbest · 20/11/2025 08:32

I’m a plus girl and some of the options in SHEIN are fantastic. They do a whole curve wedding range and the prices are often under £50

Sounds fabUlous as Craig would say. I love the idea of getting wed in an electric blue cocktail dress. Don’t think I’d be able to walk though tbh! I bet you looked wonderful 💙

Yes! There’s one I have my eye on. It’s out of stock in the 5xl at the moment. But I do keep looking. I love a bit of Shien. I really like Yours but it’s SO expensive and the quality isn’t too good anymore. Shein is where it’s at I think. Thank you. Xx

I’ve chosen this dress. It needs an iron. I need better undies 😆 but I’m kind of liking it!
