Hi All
would anyone like to help me find a dress (or similar) for an event?
Must cover knees and shoulders - says this on the invite
Black tie
Size 16 hourglass, don't love my legs but good boobs
5 ft 5
I am in my 50's
I like colour
Brown hair and olive skin
Have a dread of looking "matronly" or "frumpy"
Have dodgy feet so will have to wear reasonably comfy shoes
Willing to pay up to £200
I like the below but think it might be for someone thinner
Petite Joanna Gold Open Back Sparkle Dress – Ro&Zo

Thank you in advance

My dress is from monsoon, about 4 inches above floor (I’m 5’6) I had to go up a size from what I usually buy

Lovely dress but if the invitation specifies knees and shoulders to be covered wouldn’t the bare back on that dress render it unsuitable?

I’m in exactly the same situation and need a dress and looked at this one. But I’ve got a bit of a tummy on me and am concerned about it being too clingy across my lumps.

I’m 49 and also worried about looking frumpy!

Shapewear?
I got some recently to smooth out my bumpy bits and feel more confident in an outfit.
Wouldn't make a habit of it but for a special event it's worth it.

I’m sorry - I haven’t read any more posts after this. You’ve said other suggestions are frumpy - but this is even more so!

Do you really know what you want?

No I do not, that is why I am here

I like that
Its unlikley I would wear it again though so ££££
In fact I will probably not wear whatever I get again, my last formal dress is 5 years old and was worn once
Maybe I need to get on Vinted or similar

But if you’re not going to wear the dress again why not rent?

Hoppinggreen · 10/11/2025 08:32

I am going to look into renting but my concern is if I can't try on and it arrives a day or so before and I hate it/doesn't fit I will be scrambling to try and find something.
I think I will see if there is somewhere not too far away I can hire from and go and try on

I think renting may be the way to go actually, we will be renting DH and DS Tux
I will need to sort DD as well, I doubt she has anything that covers the appropriate bits
Thank you to everyone who posted so far and apolgies if I am being reaally fussy

While we are here would the below be suitable for DD?

Op I have military family, your first dress is fine and the nicest so far. Your shoulders are covered enough, it just means you can’t wear anything strapless.

and agree with you the dresses you stated as frumpy are absolutely frumpy.

Frenchfrychic · 10/11/2025 08:50

Also the first dress will be fine for a size 16, just wear some great underwear.

I did think it just meant not strapless but then wasn't so sure
I actually have a lovely dark Aubergine Ralph Lauren dress I have worn once before but it does not fully cover shoulders, I could wear that and a lace shrug I can take off later (if allowed). I don't think it will look as nice with a shrug or similar but if that was just a temp thing I could put up with it I suppose.

I see you've pretty well made a decision, but since I'd already found it ... rent or buy: https://johnlewisfashionrental.com/items/sequin-ruched-midi-dress

The dress you linked for DD is a different choice! My brain labelled it a 'flower fairy' dress. Does DD like frily?

I do really like that, thank you
I was hoping to avoid black but I am not totally opposed to it

@GarlicHound
DD loves that designer so I think she would really like it, her style is a bit 70s flower child
Very very unlike me
