Why do I do this ?

I've recently bought 2 new pairs of shoes and have some new clothes as well , so why am I not wearing them and still putting on my old and tatty stuff ?
It's not about saving for best , I don't do that .
But I keep wearing the old and never choosing the new .

Is it habit? And forgetting about new when rushing to get ready?

Have you worked out how to style the new items? What other items to wear them with?

Or is there something wrong with the new items? Uncomfortable etc?

These are some of the things that held me back in the past.

I’d force yourself to wear a new item, that will help flush out the reason why you don’t choose to wear it, or hopefully show you why you should wear it!

I do this too! I’ve recently bought myself a few new outfits as I’m sick of wearing old scruffy leggings and sweatshirts I feel rubbish in but I’m still wearing them! I think I just need to get rid of the old clothes so I can’t wear them anymore!

I don't know if they are uncomfortable because I've never worn them , and regard to styling , I just put anything on and hope for the best !

Put your old clothes away and make it easy to wear your new stuff

Yes , it's the familiar and I guess ' safe ' that makes me wear the old .

I do this and I think I it’s mostly a laziness thing for me. The clothes I’ve been wearing are always on top of the pile in my drawers/at the front of my wardrobe after washing and putting away so it’s just easier for me to grab them!

MrsEmmelineLucas · 09/11/2025 13:12

Get a large bag. Wash all those sweatshirts and leggings and give them to a charity shop!
You'll have to wear the new stuff!

ozarina · 09/11/2025 13:13

Move them on - vinted or charity.

shuffleofftobuffalo · 09/11/2025 13:15

I do this and infuriate myself! I find it’s linked to my level of resilience - if im stressed I’ll gravitate towards old favourites as its comforting and one less decision to make .

I think this is definitely what I need to do!

newrubylane · 09/11/2025 20:25

I find I need to take the time to try the new things with other things in my wardrobe to know what works. Otherwise I just go for the ease of the familiar things where I already know what works with what.

AlertCat · 09/11/2025 20:42

Were you brought up with new clothes being something to save for the right moment? I find it’s either hard to wear them and they hang in the wardrobe for ages, or I go the other way and wear them immediately even if there is a risk of mud (dog walks etc). It’s like I never got used to new clothes as a kid so they’re always too special to wear.

TheOGCCL · 09/11/2025 21:00

I’m a bit like the previous poster where I am worried I’ll ‘waste’ something new on an average day and then wish I’d saved it for a day I’ll see more people or am doing something nice. This never actually happens as I have plenty of nice clothes.

I tend to buy things one at a time which makes it easier to fit them in with my existing stuff and I’m not ever wearing an entire new outfit. I don’t put the item away in my wardrobe until it’s been worn and washed, I hang it where I can see it.

I think I've become a clothes hoarder, I had to get rid of a most of my clothes for a big move, and I was really really distraught about it. At the time I was kind of okay with it but as the months went on I got more and more upset and felt like I had lost a bit of myself, now, a year later I seem to buy things and hoard them. Replacing what I lost and buying more. I've gained weight too so the new clothes don't look so good but yet lm I'm buying more and hoarding more. I seem to be stuck in this cycle. I wear probably 60% of it but it's getting a bit silly now. It feels like I'm trying to buy back the old me or something. Or maybe I'm just greedy and want everything?

WinterBerry40 · 10/11/2025 08:31

Thanks for all your thoughts and suggestions . I never really kept things for best , as I don't go anywhere to dress up . But I'm determined to at least wear a new pair of shoes out this week .

BusterGonad · 10/11/2025 08:47

Yes, definitely wear the shoes, and I'll wear the jumper dress that I bought a month ago.

dontlikethings · 10/11/2025 08:50

I do this too! As a PP said, I think it links back to childhood when I didn't have many new clothes, and then later on when I had young children, there was no money for new clothes. Goodness knows what I think I'm keeping my 'good' clothes for now. I should wear the full range of my clothes and shoes before I die, otherwise what were they all for?

CaminoPlanner · 10/11/2025 08:53

Can you lay out an outfit on a hanger by your bed or on the bathroom door - wherever you usually get dressed, complete with underwear and socks, so you just automatically put those new clothes on. Then get the new shoes out and put them in the hallway ready to put on as you leave the house.

LunaTheCat · 10/11/2025 08:55

We have such complex relationships with clothes. I grew up with not enough warm clothes and you should see how many jumpers I have !
Clothes are a hobby, a delight. I feel so much better when dressed well.
Why do women feel such guilt about something that makes them feel better.

When my Grandmother died we found a few boxes of shoes she had never worn and had probably paid up week by week. Wear the shoes and clothes!

henlake7 · 10/11/2025 17:32

If I buy something new and I'm not sure i'll wear it make sure I put it on and wear it the next day! Gets rid of that whole stress about saving things for best....and if I end up wearing a posh frock to Sainsbury's then I'm fine with it!

ozarina · 11/11/2025 21:01

Just put some sweaters on Vinted as I got a couple of new ones.

LBB2020 · 11/11/2025 22:14

I wore one of my new outfits today and felt great for it!
