Leave in conditioner

My hair is so dry and knotty at the moment. I think possibly due to being peri menopausal. I've also noticed quite a lot of breakage along my hairline as I usually wear my hair up daily. I've stopped doing that now but think a leave in conditioner might help too?
Does anyone have any recommendations. My hair despite being dry does get greasy quite quickly and I hate the feeling of products in my hair. Previous things I've used are - ColorWow Dream Coat ( I liked how it made my hair look but hated the feeling) Umberto Giannini Blonde Spray Leave in conditioner (hated the feeling of my hair) and Philip Kingsley Elasticizer (didn't notice any difference ) I also used to use a kids detangling spray which I actually really liked but the smell was awful!

Aveda Botanical Repair was the best thing I’ve ever used. I got it in the M&S summer beauty bag and loved it. It is very expensive though but so worth it!

TeaRoseTallulah · 23/10/2025 09:01

Johnson's leave on conditioner in the white bottle. Someone mentioned on here and it's fantastic, especially when you wake up with wild hair but it doesn't need washing just a refresh.

Happyjoe · 23/10/2025 09:08

Aveda is really good but very expensive, wait til black Friday offers! I use Sol de Janeiro Brazilian Joia leave in - I have menopausal, fine and thin curly hair which breaks a lot, esp if I try to grow it past a certain length. I also use Paul Mitchell lavender mint leave in (I buy whichever is on offer!). Both are fab, no heavy residue, apart from silky-soft hair, neither of them create any sticky or greasy feeling as long as don't use too much. I love the smell of the Sol de Janeiro.

Edited to add, also try a satin pillow cover. Theory to stop dragging of the hair when sleep and breakages. Dunno if it works but I like using mine, so soft!

I've been using this for years, it's brilliant. Apply to the bottom 2/3 not the roots, before blowing dry.
I finish with a tiny squirt of serum on the ends.

Plump82 · 23/10/2025 09:23

I've actually just bought a satin bonnet. Considered a pillow case but my cat likes to sleep up on my pillow so would most likely claw it to bits!
I'll have a look at all those suggestions and keep an eye on any good offers. My MIL always asks for suggestions for Christmas so could get the Johnsons one for now and ask for the more expensive one as a gift. I love the smell of Sol De Janeiro too and didn't realise they did hair care

L'Oréal Paris Elvive Extraordinary Oil Midnight Renourishing Hair Treatment Serum for Dry Hair - I'm loving this at the moment. I apply it through my dry hair everyday, sometimes more. It doesn't weigh it down. Its a dupe for a keratese expensive ones.

FartSock5000 · 23/10/2025 09:36

Garnier Hair Food - the banana and coconut ones are magical. I have very curly hair and this product leaves soft, shiny hair with no residue or itchy scalp. Im also peri and rate it highly.

ranoutofquinoaandprosecco · 23/10/2025 10:34

I’m using the Garnier Banana hair food at the moment, I’ve just started swimming quite a bit so I leave it in after I’ve showered and then wash it out the next day and repeat!

OkyDoke · 23/10/2025 10:36

I am really liking the Ouai leave in conditioner at the moment!

Plump82 · 23/10/2025 11:19

I used to use the Garnier banana one and wasn't keen. My hairs quite straight so not sure if that has anything to do with it. I saw someone recommend the Ouai one on Instagram so good to have another recommendation for it.
I'll have a look at the L'Oréal one as hadn't really considered something for when my hair is dry.

Silk has more benefits than satin for your hair if you’re using a bonnet or pillowcase, but obviously satin is much cheaper.

At the lower budget end, the Aussie leave-in conditioner is good. For more £, look at Mon Platin Professional Black Caviar hair cream (it’s actually a spray) as it lasts ages and makes a real difference. Even more ££ is Kerastase Genesis serum (use overnight) which is fantastic for minimising hair breakage and strengthening hair.

I hate Ouai, or rather my hair does. All their products make my hair feel like straw for some reason. I ended up binning them all. Such a waste.

henlake7 · 23/10/2025 12:13

Ive just used the Garnier leave in conditioner, heat protecting spray when blow drying and a leave in conditioner after and my hair still looks like Ive washed it in sand and rubbed a balloon on it after!

Seriously.....f**k perimenopause!😡
My armpit hair is thicker and in better condition!

NeitherStylishnorBeautiful · 23/10/2025 12:49

I agree with the recommendation of Aveda, sometimes you can pick it up on Vinted. For more budget friendly I use Garnier Ultimate Blends, in either Honey Treaures or Delicate Oat. Massive tube, lasts for ages as you only need a tiny squidge. Not easily found in shops so I get mine from Amazon https://amzn.eu/d/d6vPMFd

FionnulaTheCooler · 23/10/2025 12:52

I get the Palmers coconut oil formula one for DD's long hair, it seems good and smells really nice.

Thundertoast · 23/10/2025 13:16

I also hate the feeling of product in my hair! What's worked for me is to actually read the suggested number of pumps/squirts and go from there, and if there arent any, for leave in conditioner sprays I start with 4 and go from there, trying 1 more each time I blow dry.

I have fine, straight/wavy hair that tangles easily and am growing out some bleach damage from two years ago under my current colour. So ive tried a lot!

I currently have on rotation:

Hair mask after washing: (leave it on for 20 minutes once a week then rinse) Garner Hair Food Papaya (I also hated the banana one, none of the others compare to the Papaya.
Note: I have tried basically every deep conditioner on the higher street and this is by far the best.

Leave in conditioner:

Currently trying out the Milk Shake Leave in Conditioner and its nice enough, works best if I put 4 pumps into my hand, rub hands together, run through hair, then repeat. Im pleased so far, been using it a few weeks.

others:

Shwarzkopf Professional Bonacure Moisture Kick spray conditoner (or any of the professional spray conditioners, you can get them on amazon. Need to shake them up then spray in. Very good - they have changed the formula on the Bonacure and it isnt as good as it used to be though, annoyingly.

Ouai Leave in conditioner:
Also very nice, but pricey

Kerastase Genesis Defense Thermique:
Technically a heat protectant but definitely doubles as a leave in. Its unfortunately, bloody excellent. Unfortunately, because its also expensive.

L'Oréal Paris Elvive Extraordinary Oil - use this every day, one pump and then run it through mid lengths to ends gently (dont tug, your hair will gently untangle as more oil gets worked through) love this stuff and its the only hair oil that rivals the Kerastase Elixir Ultime for me (which is unfortunately also bloody excellent and pricey, but I think the L'Oréal does a great job at challenging it, and I've tried a lot of oils)

Cornflowers35 · 23/10/2025 13:23

Place marking so I can come back later

Blarn · 23/10/2025 13:27

I like John frieda leave in conditioner on the purple bottle, been using it for years. Not greasy or heavy, just looks and feels better.

MorningFresh · 23/10/2025 13:32

Plump82 · 23/10/2025 09:26

Yes.
I have very thick hair and wash with Aussie shampoo. Dont use conditioner but spray this on and blow dry. I use Aussie serum on the ends.

I agree. This stuff is great. Put it on at night and when you brush your hair in the morning it is glossy but not greasy. If my hair is looking a bit dry I just put some on my fingers and run it through the tips of my hair, avoiding the roots, and it makes my hair shiny without getting lank. Smells quite strongly botanical.

Chiefangel · 23/10/2025 14:29

My hair was straw like, snapping off and thinning at crown due to illness and stress. I bought some Cantu Shea butter leave in conditioner and honestly it’s like magic. Really recommend this.

rockysnout · 23/10/2025 15:54

also consider getting some blood tests done! i was complaining to my hairdresser that my hair was so dry and crispy and she said to get my thyroid and vitamin b12 checked - she was right and i needed to take strong supplements.

This is interesting as I'm vegetarian and just looked up vitamin B12 deficiency which apparently vegetarians can suffer from.
