Leave in conditioner

My hair is so dry and knotty at the moment. I think possibly due to being peri menopausal. I've also noticed quite a lot of breakage along my hairline as I usually wear my hair up daily. I've stopped doing that now but think a leave in conditioner might help too?
Does anyone have any recommendations. My hair despite being dry does get greasy quite quickly and I hate the feeling of products in my hair. Previous things I've used are - ColorWow Dream Coat ( I liked how it made my hair look but hated the feeling) Umberto Giannini Blonde Spray Leave in conditioner (hated the feeling of my hair) and Philip Kingsley Elasticizer (didn't notice any difference ) I also used to use a kids detangling spray which I actually really liked but the smell was awful!

Colour wow kale leave in conditioner! I also diidn’t like how dream coat made my hair feel, but the leave in conditioners are much better imo

Onethreefiveseven · 23/10/2025 20:24

Ooh I'm also looking for something like this.

Are any of the products people have recommended fragrance free? I generally find aveda and kerastase products to be very effective but the perfumes are often really strong!

I also find that anything with dimethicone causes bad build up.

I've been trying just using argan oil but it's not quite enough. I'd love for my hair to feel properly silky

Portakalkedi · 23/10/2025 20:32

Following with interest! My post menopausal hair is impervious to many of the above conditioners, they seem to work then it vanishes within 10 minutes and back to strawlike.

MyFastEagle · 23/10/2025 20:34

I follow a hairdresser on you tube called the blow dry professor (I think) and he recommends a leave in conditioner called colour fanatic by pureology. It’s not just for coloured hair and I’ve been using it for a while now and my hair is so shiny and in amazing condition. He’s an American, but a lot of the stuff he recommends is available here in the UK and he’s well worth a watch as he gives some great tips about hair care.

DisenchantedDewberry · 23/10/2025 21:57

Fanola restructuring leave in conditioner.
I had my hair dyed quite a bit to get it from red to blonde (at the hairdressers) and it was so knotty and unmanageable and Fanola literally worked the first time I used it, my hair doesn't tangle at all now and the brush just glides through. Only need a small amount of it, its lasted me ages, use it maybe once or twice a week 🤞

mamagogo1 · 23/10/2025 22:03

i use the cantu leave in conditioner for curly hair

OSTMusTisNT · 23/10/2025 22:08

Neale and Wolf miracle mist is fantastic for my thick, coarse, straw like hair. (And, smells amazing).

A tad pricey but lasts for ages, you can buy a travel size bottle first to try it out before taking the plunge to by the huge £25 bottle.

TeaRoseTallulah · 23/10/2025 22:34

The best one I have ever found is Lush hair milk ,my hair looks incredible when I use it which is never as the smell is SO strong! I love perfumes but this stuff keeps me awake at night if I use it. I've tried watering it down and leaving the top off to see if that helps but makes no difference sadly. The smell is burnt vanilla, really rank.

TheGeordieKettlewitch · 23/10/2025 23:11

My hair is also very dry and I've found that I get the best result by combining a good hair treatment with a heated bonnet. My go to is Philip Kingsley elasticiser and I use the bonnet for around an hour after applying and then shower, and rinse but don't shampoo. My hair is amazing afterwards compared to what it would be just washing and conditioning normally. It is a faff though and is more of a once a week exercise than so.ething you could do more frequently?

Zodiacrobat · 23/10/2025 23:44

I have thick wavy long hair. I use Espa Pink Hair and Scalp Mud as an overnight treatment the night before I wash my hair. It really works to reduce frizz and make my hair more glossy and easier to manage and style. It also helps my scalp which can get dry now I’m menopausal.

Rina66 · 24/10/2025 01:05

This is brilliant, I can only ever find it in Tescos - I also use Kerastase products, but I think this conditioner is as good

I have super-fine hair and am also post-meno. I use a couple of different leave-ins on mine. They’re Korean and have noticeably improved my hair quality and strength - plus it’s now longer than I have ever managed to grow it since I was a teenager. I “squish” some Hair+ Bonding Ampoule (it’s like a lotion) or Kundal No Wash Bond Treatment into the ends and mid lengths. I pop my hair into a microfiber towel or bonnet for 20-30mins and then a light mist of either Hair+ Prontein Bond Water Essence or Kundal equivalent. They are much cheaper than Olaplex or K18, and seem to suit my hair better.
I also recommend a Japanese Shampoo, Conditioner and Mask called Tsubaki. (Link below, and you can see the rest of the range.)

I’m not an influencer and that code has nothing to do with me, but any discount is good, right? You can also get this from many other online stores and probably Japanese beauty shops.

Cantu Leave in conditioner from Boots. Small amount seems to do the trick.

IrisPallida · 24/10/2025 10:17

Which Kerastase product exactly are people recommending?

TheJessops · 24/10/2025 10:33

Good, cheap in shower rinse out conditioners that I find great for detangling in the first place are L'Oreal Elvive colour protect (the red one) but it's getting more expensive every time I go to Tesco now! Cheap as chips (actually cheaper than chips) conditioner is Alberto Balsam green apple - fantastic detangler and it's only £1 and smells delicious.

And then, the advice you actually asked for - Olaplex Bond Maintainance (no.6) it's a cream and just melts in to your hair when damp, so you are unaware of it, seems to work for me, detangles and seems to protect, I have fine hair but lots of it, and I've been colouring it since I was 15.

I find if you detangle it as much as possible throughout all the stages of washing and styling then, obviously, breakage and nots are way way less.

Rina66 · 24/10/2025 11:30

My Kerastase faves are

8h Magic Night serum - use on dry hair at night, wake up with a lovely smooth barnet 😂
Masquintense Hair Mask - use after shampooing once a week, leave on for 10 mins - always towel dry before applying though
L’Huile Originale hair oil - use on wet or dry hair daily, smooths without looking oily

The shampoos are good too but that’s a real treat, I’d rather spend my money on those three products! I do try to get them duty free at the airport although Kerastase usually have a 20% off offer.

Fiftyandme · 24/10/2025 11:33

Silk bonnet, not satin - satin doesn’t work half as well.

Then you need to figure out what’s causing the issues before you treat. Too little moisture - breakage. Too much protein - breakage. Too little protein - breakage. Surfactants that are too harsh for your hair - breakage. To many silicones - prevents moisture from penetrating into the hair shaft - breakage. Hard water area? Drying - breakage.

Plump82 · 24/10/2025 11:39

Thank you for all these suggestions!! I'll need to go through them all and see what I think would be best for my hair!! Going to get the ends tidied and then start from there when it's freshly cut.

Paul Mitchell The Conditioner. Only need a tiny pea sized amount.

Squirrelsnut · 24/10/2025 13:49

You can dilute any conditioner in a good amount of water in a spray bottle and use it as a leave- in. I use a non-silicone one as I have fine hair. You need to experiment a little to get the right water ratio but they work brilliantly.

Teathecolourofcreosote · 24/10/2025 15:32

I bought this cheap little sachet on Amazon after a recommendation on here and it's better than any of the more expensive options. Think Home Bargains etc sell them too. I can get about three uses out of the packet (guess that's a plus side of thin crap hair!)
