Heavy rain today, and reminded me I still need to sort out footwear!

Hi all, I just wondered as day to day shoes, what people are wearing. Because unless you wear some sort of wellie, or a casual boot or trainer that says it is waterproof.
I assume others are like myself, in that the rain goes through the top or sole of my shoes.

But ankle wellies for example, which I have owned before would not be wearable all day.
So I’m considering buying some trainers that say they are waterproof.
Though they were always not very nice looking to me, usually relate them to hiking etc 😃 or they now seem to do some but aimed at those who run.

So just wondering what others have got or do when they are out for the day and it’s wet.
Thanks!

I wear my new balance 740s. They’re mesh but a thicker sole so unless im stepping in the middle of puddles my feet tend to stay dry

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 20/10/2025 10:50

I’ve got leather Nike hi tops and dm boots.

Thanks, yes I have read a few other comments on here where NB trainers were mentioned.

I guess with leather it helps a bit. DM sound good, I do see some women with patent boots on, or that kind of shine, so does make me think of DM’s, never owned any I have to say.

Leather hi tops worked well for me. I had an allsaints pair and they were grand. Generally leather trainers hi tops or not tend to keep feet warm and dry in all but the most torrential weather.

I wear Merry Boots on the school run. They could be worn all day in cold weather but too warm for autumn all day imo. I love mine!

FastFood · 20/10/2025 11:06

I'm soon going to transition to my Merry People chunky chelsea boots. Wearing them now, since it's raining, but I could have gotten away with my high top converse.

AltitudeCheck · 20/10/2025 11:18

Urban puddles then DM boots, classic and waterproof. Hiking/ countryside Regular trainers or walking shoes and waterproof socks.

Branleuse · 20/10/2025 11:32

dr marten classic boots are pretty good in the rain, especially if reproofed here and there.
my favourite winter boots though are my Vans MTE goretex boots. I bloody love them so much. So warm and comfortable, and dont have that weird raised front that so many walking boots do . Amazing grip. Warm, comfortable, waterproof and snowproof

Cyclistmumgrandma · 20/10/2025 11:39

Allbirds have just released fully waterproof sneakers. They don't look like hiking boots or running shoes and I find Allbirds very comfortable. It's an added bonus that they're pretty sustainable

Converse platform high tops and switch to crocs to walk the dog tbh.

DancingFerret · 20/10/2025 12:01

I have these. Can't recommend them highly enough for comfort and very dry feet - although, of course, everyone is different.

PigletJohn · 20/10/2025 12:26

Trainers have lots of holes for the laces that rain gets in.

Serious walking boots have what I think is called a bellows tongue to keep water out. Leather boots and shoes will always get wet in serious rain, especially leather soles.

A short boot will withstand walking to the car.

Handmethegunandaskmeagain · 20/10/2025 12:37

DM boots. Previously I have had other Chelsea boots. That’s my winter footwear.

Both sound great especially the Vans! I shall have to google that name and see what I find, thankyou!

These look good hoping there are black ones, very like something I have but just in an ordinary trainer, thankyou.

Any leather shoe/boot stitched (as opposed to glued) to a rubber sole should be fine, unless you're walking through puddles or wet grass. You can wax/treat them periodically to care for them and ensure water repellency.

Yes, they do quite a few colours, including black.

Cyclistmumgrandma · 21/10/2025 10:05

Oh, and they do more than one style in their waterproof section…

Wiennetta · 21/10/2025 11:57

I live in Scotland and I have a couple of decent options for a rainy day where I want to stay dry but also look somewhat stylish.

Boots:
I have Ganni city boots - they are basically wellies, made of rubber. But look more like chunky Chelsea boots and are v comfy.

These ones:

Similar styles from Tretorn and others available too.

Trainers:

I have Adidas Goretex trainers and Converse weatherised.

Adidas have loads: https://www.adidas.co.uk/terrex-free-hiker-2.0-low-gore-tex-hiking-shoes/IH3540.html

Converse if you want something less sporty:

Whilst I wear walking boots a lot, I wanted some new waterproof trainers.
Today I have ordered some Sketchers w/p trainers with bellows tongue from QVC Available in black, white or slate. I have ordered slate.

Iheartmysmart · 21/10/2025 12:14

I’ve got Scarpa walking boots which I used to wear for walking the dog in the rain. Sadly I no longer have him so they don’t get a lot of use any more. Then some waterproof leather converse for everyday rainy wear which are really comfortable plus a pair of waterproof trainers.

Aww okay, I think I have seen upon searching online that Skechers do a waterproof, not sure if it’s the same ones.
Perhaps you could give some feedback if you don’t mind, on how they turn out to be, thanks.

Properly outdoors or very bad weather in winter I have some nice hiking boots. Everyday wear I have Goretex Converse and MTE Vans. Also have some chunky leather lace up boots.
