London trip

Off to London soon. I have lots of clothes and lots of ideas for what to wear. I’m also absolutely not here for anybody wanting to tell me that nobody gives a shit and only foreign tourists and provincial idiots care about what they wear.

What I am here for is wanting to know what YOU would wear for the following:

  • A day that includes travelling, some sight seeing and shopping and a casual Michelin star lunch
  • a theatre trip
  • a casual dinner and pubs

I love talking clothes, so this is just an excuse to be nosy!

My only real contemplation points are shoes and coats, as ideally I only want one coat and one pair of shoes for the whole trip. Bags will be a Longchamp le Pliage and then a tiny cross body Longchamp plus a Westwood for the theatre, I think.

Can you say where the lunch is?

Wide leg trousers/jeans, t shirt, blazer, smart trainers, waterproof in your bag - would see you through most things. Make sure your shoes are comfortable.

IndiaAutumn · 19/10/2025 08:25

Hmm initially read your question as “one outfit that works for all this” but having read it again I think maybe you are thinking of multiple
outfits.

Wadadli · 19/10/2025 08:40

I will be going to see Level 42 at the Royal Albert Hall on Weds and plan to wear wide leg trousers, vintage shirt, a belted leather jacket, with chunky boots with a scarf I can shove in a cross body bag

MissFritton65 · 19/10/2025 08:42

@RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie great question as I'm going to London next weekend going very similar things! I'm currently thinking-
Train down- jeans, short boots maybe a fair isle and cross body bag.
Dinner and theatre - tuxedo dress with heels ( theatre, hotel and restaurant all within 5 mins walk)
Sunday -( Race Across World Experience and lunch) leather trousers, fair isle, boots and bag as before. I've a great lightweight coat if it's going to be wet.

Yes - 3 different ones, maybe.

The lunch is Trishna in Marylebone.

I won’t be bothering with heels, so will likely be in Docs or smart trainers (Fitflop Ralley).

Wide legged trousers a possibility for the lunch but tbh they feel a bit workwear to me.

Theatre - will depend on shoes and coats, but I have lots of nice dresses. Maybe a Whistles silk mini (loose and slouchy so not too trussed up and dressy) or I could do a satin midi with a nice top of some sort.

I’ve got an excellent shower proof trench coat if it’s going to be rainy. Otherwise I tend to go for a leather jacket.

@MissFritton65 What are you seeing at the theatre?

Does the Michelin star restaurant have a dress code? That will dictate that day.

wear comfortable shoes whatever you do.

What sort of clothes do you usually wear? There’s no point anyone suggesting things that you might not already own, assuming you don’t want to go out and buy a whole load of clothes just for that weekend.

Jade3450 · 19/10/2025 09:13

Ooh, what will you wear on your feet with the silk mini dress OP? Tights? And what jacket?

Can you share a photo of it? I’m excited by that outfit!

I think she’s asking what YOU would wear.

@RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie Oliver! We are eating in Somerset House and staying at The Waldorf so all very close together.

goldtrap · 19/10/2025 09:26

I would say, if forecast is rainy, a small umbrella is probably more useful than trying to decide which coat to wear for all occasions. It's always slightly warmer in London and tubes are hot, so I would take a lighter coat or jacket (trench sounds good if not too heavy) and possibly a light/cashmere wide scarf you can pull out or fold in a bag as needs dictate.

EllaPaella · 19/10/2025 09:40

I’d wear my barrel leg jeans with Adidas trainers, charcoal grey merino wool jumper for the sightseeing with a leopard print crossbody bag and if cold enough my long black wool coat.
For the evening meals/drinks - I’ve just ordered this dress which I think is perfect for dressing down with chunky black DM style boots and my Allsaints leather jacket for dressing down and heeled clack suede knee high boots for dressing it up.

EllaPaella · 19/10/2025 09:41

Really should have edited that! Knee high black suede boots is what I was trying to say!

Wiennetta · 19/10/2025 09:44

If your boots are Docs, I’d be thinking of the following outfits (I have Docs too and wear them loads in winter).

Casual (dinner and pub trip): Docs, boyfriend jeans and nice jumper.

Sightseeing and fancy lunch: Docs, midi dress or skirt and cashmere jumper. I’d make it feel dressier by picking a midi with a dressy texture - lace or silky etc.

Could wear the fancy lunch outfit for the theatre or go for your silk mini which sounds perfect.

I’m not actually asking for suggestions though - just wondering what others would choose.

No dress code at the restaurant.

Great thread, I think I'd go for:
Sightseeing/shopping/lunch - baggy, tweedy trousers, fitted 1940s/50s jacket, sturdy flat shoes.

Theatre - same jacket with midi skirt and new cowboy boots

Dinner and pub - same trousers with 70s shirt with a big, pointy dagger collar and, if extra layer needed, a tank top.

I'd like to say a tweed overcoat but it's probably not cold enough yet so, reluctantly, my M&S trenchcoat which has a hood. (I don't hate it but it's not my favourite).

Have a lovely time.

Editing cos just seen you only want one pair of shoes. Sorry but I think I'll have to break that rule!

teacupzs · 19/10/2025 09:52

A day that includes travelling, some sight seeing and shopping and a casual Michelin star lunch

Jeans, sweat and trainers, padded jacket, cross body bag

a theatre trip

top, wide leg trousers, mary janes and my velvet opera coat, clutch

a casual dinner and pubs

similar to my sightseeing but might swap the trainers for mary Janes and the sweat for a knit

This is a mistake imo.
Coats are underrated and most don't have enough but you really need different ones for different looks and particularly if they hide the rest of your outfit.

I could not sight see in anything other than trainers or some sandals.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 19/10/2025 09:55

I’m excited for your new cowboy boots @Floisme

If it’s dry, I might wear flared black jeans for the casual pub and a second day of sightseeing.

Who wants to lug a spare coat on the train though?

I’ve also realised that I lied and it isn’t silk. It’s silky though and I like it!
