When do you take off your make up?

Do you tend to take it off as soon as your home or do you do it before bed? I do mine before bed but I wonder if my skin would thank me for taking it off sooner?!?

Oh, long before bed, about nine on a work day but later on weekends. My hubby has never seen me without makeup

@Zuve But if you take your makeup off at 9pm, where’s your husband all night if he’s not around to see you? Or are you saying you remove your makeup and then immediately reapply it?

TheWibble · 18/10/2025 23:13

I either do it when I get home from work or before bed. It's 50/50.

My pillow does it for me....

It gets removed when I’m in the shower every morning 😂 I’m 61, have beautiful skin and I’ve never used any fancy lotions!

Taking makeup off before bed isn’t about ‘fancy lotions’. It’s more about washing your face at the end of a day. You know, just basic hygiene stuff.

By Mumsnet standards I’m actually not at all picky about hygiene, but I feel like washing your face is a bare minimum.

In answer to the OP, I usually take my makeup off just before bed. I don’t think it matters when you remove it really - it’s more about how. For me, that’s the hot cloth cleanser method. I don’t like micellar water because my face never feels clean from it somehow, as if it’s left a slight residue behind. Obviously millions of women love it, though, so I assume it just doesn’t suit my particular skin type.

Chinsupmeloves · 18/10/2025 23:36

I only wear a few basics which generally rub off during the day and certainly after a shower so don't do anything.

MO0N · 18/10/2025 23:40

Never, it just sort of wears off.
Mascara is a pain though & I tend to avoid it.

That ^^
plus a hot flannel on my face after I get home feels amazing and I want my products to go on clean skin

egganbacofoil · 19/10/2025 00:57

I just rub it off over the day 🤦‍♀️

I'm like this too, I try so hard to be good and remove it before bed but I'm so exhausted I usually don't. Luckily I do have good skin and always have, I don't overload my skin with make up just a little but if everything. My poor pillow case is stained with mascara, nothing gets it out! Not even Fairy liquid prewash 😕

I take mine off as my son is falling asleep. I then put my skincare on over the next couple of hours or so whilst I watch an episode of something and get ready for bed. I use lots of different skincare products that I prefer to let soak in for 10/15 mins before I apply the next one, and tretinoin which needs to go on dry skin.

What products do you put on and in what order? My skin care routine is ~non existent~ crap and I am trying to find advice on what to do but there is so much conflicting information advice.

Worldgonecrazy · 19/10/2025 06:15

Whenever my next shower is, so usually just before bed. If I’ve had a late night it will be pillow/next morning. I’m also blessed with good mostly wrinkle free skin in my late 50s. I wash it off with whatever soap is in the shower too, so breaking every skin rule! Life is too short for cleanser/toner/whatever skin care trend is in.

I have combination skin and am prone to breakouts which have totally stopped since using tret.

Am - inkey list vitamin c serum, inkey list hyaluronic acid with a bit of 100% glycerin mixed in, anua niacinamide serum, Ole Henrikson peptide moisturiser, cicaplast baume, Istree sun cream

Pm - tret then same as above minus vit c and sun cream.

FieryA · 19/10/2025 08:51

Soon as I get home and then apply night cream.

Baggyeyesbaggy · 19/10/2025 09:05

I have a bath or shower every night so wash my face then. Occasionally I'll use a wipe for my face before then if I'm feeling sticky!

How come you take your make up off about 9pm, long before bed, yet your husband never sees you without make up.

Don’t you live together @Zuve?
I’m not the only one mystified by your answer. 😀

PistachioTiramisu · 19/10/2025 10:41

I take off my make up when I get home, but re-do it for the evening! Always have done!

Greentreesx · 19/10/2025 11:02

I dont wear any i dont own any make-up.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 19/10/2025 11:35

When I get in from work overnight up if WFH - makeup off, maybe another shower, skincare, loungewear on, contact lenses out and specs on.

Everyone is confused by this, do you never spend the night with your husband? If you take it off long before bed, I assume not? You never see him after you take if off or before you put it on?

QueenStevie · 19/10/2025 11:49

In the morning after my shower. Then I moisturise and put the new lot straight on.

Daftypants · 19/10/2025 11:49

I remove mine just before bed .
And try to allow enough time so I’m not heading to bed too late 😆
(I’m one who does all the late night things in the house )

Six o'clock make up comes off, lounge wear on, dinner and Netflix.

That’s my perfect evening 😀

I worked with a lady who had been married for 6 years before it ended, but her DH had never seen her without makeup, she’d never farted or burped in his presence. She seemed really proud of this but I just thought it was a bit sad and her marriage failed regardless of her appearance.
