Do men still wear ties anywhere ?

Watching a 1980s video and men are wearing ties as normal every day wear

DH wore one to a wedding a few years ago , and funerals

I worked in tech so ties were kept in desk drawers for the one day a year they would be needed. Do younger men even have them?

Yes, to work.

RandomGeocache · 18/10/2025 13:08

DH is a senior manager and will only wear a tie when they have someone important visiting - like a MP or similar. Or for a funeral or wedding.

I am a charity shop volunteer and ties are almost impossible to sell.

I actually did a double take the other day when I saw a man wearing a suit and tie walking down the road!! I do miss seeing men dressed smartly - I used to love seeing my husband in suit and tie. These days it's scruffy t-shirts and jeans - sigh!!

Matildahoney · 18/10/2025 13:14

DH (41) is the only one in his dept (at a university) who wears a tie.

yeesh · 18/10/2025 13:16

Funerals and weddings mostly these days. My grandfathers however were always in suits even if just sitting around the house. My gramp would take his tie off and roll up his shirt selves to cut the grass and I once saw him wear a polo shirt in a heatwave.

Same - my grandad always wore a suit and tie, although in the beach he would remove the tie and jacket and roll his sleeves up Grin

I work in healthcare, so people mainly in uniform, but pre-covid if going for a job interview men would have worn a tie - when we were interviewing recently, no one did and one woman turned up in jeans which I found a bit over casual!

Not just my imagination then

Secondary school teachers - unless in PE kit etc

GentlemanJay · 18/10/2025 13:28

In the colder months yes.

MajorMerrick · 18/10/2025 13:30

My 24yo ds loves wearing a suit and tie and wishes the fashion would come back for nights out. He wears one whenever he can, mostly job interviews, weddings etc. Otherwuse he’s in cargoes and sweatshirt.

MaggieBsBoat · 18/10/2025 13:30

My DH loves to wear a tie. He wears a suit every day and loves it when he has an important meeting so he can wear a tie. I think he looks like a gorgeous Wall Street throwback! Adorable. Which he doesn’t appreciate

This. I wore a tie everyday for my 34 year career. I was an unwritten rule.

However as I used machinery with neck breaking/strangulation potential mine was tucked inside my shirt and all but invisible.

Since retirement a tie only comes out of its own retirement for the odd wedding and more formal funerals.

I loathed wearing them. I'd have been more happy in a PE type uniform but with a not to DT ie pockets!

UtterlyOtterly · 18/10/2025 13:34

Virtually nobody I know except one man in his mid 70s. He is retired but always wears a tie, even gardening and taking his dogs for a walk. Tweed jacket, flannel shirt and a rustic type of tie. It's quite sweet really. He says he feels scruffy without a tie.

Parky04 · 18/10/2025 13:37

My DH hasn't worn a tie in over 20 years. We have been to numerous weddings and funerals in that time.

Sagaciously · 18/10/2025 13:38

My husband used to wear a tie to work but that was probably 20 years ago. No-one wears one now in his company. It seems faintly ridiculous.

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 18/10/2025 13:39

My DS had to wear one to work when he first started (suit not necessary but a shirt and tie). This was pre-Covid and he works in a different department now, don’t know if those in his original department still wear them.

My dad used to wear one even after he retired. For DH it’s funerals only (not been to a wedding in years).

SomeHorse · 18/10/2025 13:41

DH wears one quite often — for more formal/official work situations.

Crwysmam · 18/10/2025 13:44

Yes DS21 always wears a shirt and tie post rugby match and often when supporting at rugby matches. At sixth form dress was formal, business suit and tie, so is quite comfortable dressing up. Although it’s often teamed with jeans or shorts. He is much more likely to wear a tie with a shirt than my DH. DS is very tall and athletic so a suit looks really good on him which may be a factor. He has always been a bit of a head turner.

milveycrohn · 18/10/2025 13:48

My adult DSs wear them to work 3 or 4 days a week

mamagogo1 · 18/10/2025 14:01

Weddings, funerals or cruise ships (and compulsory on those except formal night!)

VimesandhisCardboardBoots · 18/10/2025 14:50

Ties are about a once a year event for me. Weddings, funerals etc. Got an awards evening in December which will probably be its only outing this year

TheChosenTwo · 18/10/2025 17:02

No men that I know - I’ve seen men come for interviews where I work and I don’t remember seeing any of them wearing a tie.
Dh owns several but I’ve seen him wear them a handful of times in the decades we’ve been together.

Almost2026 · 18/10/2025 17:04

DH & DS both bought ties in the summer for the formal nights on our cruise. Only had a black funeral one in the house before that.

Oh yes I forgot DS used to have to wear one every week after his rugby union match. League was just at presentation nights.

mynameiscalypso · 18/10/2025 17:07

My DH works in tech so wearing a jumper rather than a hoodie is dressed up for him but I’d say about half the men I interact with wear them - finance, legal, politics.
