Do men still wear ties anywhere ?

childofthe607080s · 18/10/2025 13:06

Watching a 1980s video and men are wearing ties as normal every day wear

DH wore one to a wedding a few years ago , and funerals

I worked in tech so ties were kept in desk drawers for the one day a year they would be needed. Do younger men even have them?

Dh only wears his for funerals and weddings.

BrightSpark10 · 18/10/2025 17:15

Husband wears one to work every time he’s in the office, so about 3/4 times a week. He keeps a collection in his work drawer tho 😆

PigletJohn · 18/10/2025 17:25

Yes, and I shall be wearing one with a white shirt and grey suit this evening, as I am taking a formal role at a local event.

I shall probably wearing a floral Liberty tie with a complementary (not matching) pocket square. For business purposes I would choose something more sober.

And cufflinks and stick pin.

And a non-flamboyant watch,

CrushingOnRubies · 18/10/2025 17:45

Most of the teachers at the school I work in do.

dp and df wear ties to weddings and funerals and black tie events. Dad was having a chat with me about a Christmas party he’s going to and he’s worried about black tie is too smart but his lounge suit and tie is a bit tight and not sure what to wear

Ties were a real fashion statement for men in the 80's. There was even Tie Rack, a shop dedicated to just ties. There were some really lovely (and some humorous) ones around then. I still see the odd office worker type wearing them occasionally, but nothing like it used to be.

anamo · 18/10/2025 17:55

Certain business meetings, seeing a solicitor or other professional maybe, weddings (removed after the first drink lol), and funerals if immediate family.

Chittychittychocchoc · 18/10/2025 17:59

Some roles still seem to like estate agents and teachers. In my office men do about once a week for certain types of meetings.

Was at the horse racing recently and almost everyone (including all the uni students) was wearing a tie

Squirrelsnut · 18/10/2025 18:21

DH is a teacher and wears one everyday.

Tiebiter · 18/10/2025 18:23

My boss does but he's 60+ and very traditional. I think they'll come back though. Neck adornments have been THE men's fashion item for centuries.

opencecilgee · 18/10/2025 18:25

No. The only people who wear ties are school kids so they can prepare for the workplace . Where they wont need a tie

Wow. Our school teachers dont. The head and deputy head wear jeans and trainers. The kids are smarter than the school management

Funerals and weddings mostly these days. My grandfathers however were always in suits even if just sitting around the house. My gramp would take his tie off and roll up his shirt selves to cut the grass and I once saw him wear a polo shirt in a heatwave.

Our first baby was born overseas in '77, we brought her to the UK when she was about 5 weeks old. On the morning we were due to arrive my late mother insisted that Dad wore a clean, good shirt and tie to meet her!
If you see film from further back than the '80s you will see that the vast majority of men and women were dressed quite formally, I have photos of family on holiday in which the men are wearing a shirt and tie, usually teamed with 'slacks' and a tweed jacket, they dressed like that even at a football match and my family were manual workers, not wearers of ties to work. 'Slacks' were the equivalent of, say, chinos today. I wonder what your children will say about your dress in forty years time??

Livingthebestlife · 18/10/2025 18:35

My DH wears one every day, his work uniform is suit, shirt and tie, our schools have ties from junior infants for most, not all schools, this is boys and girls. My ds is a retail manager and must wear a shirt and tie. One of our friends is a solicitor and when I go in to his office all men wear ties there. There's many jobs that require a tie here, tbh I have found weddings and funerals recently people not wearing ties.

ASuitableName · 18/10/2025 18:51

DS1 always wears a suit and tie every day for work (finance), DS2 wears one just for formal occasions.

When I was a child in the late 60s I remember my grandfather wearing a suit and tie even on the beach! It had to be extremely hot before he would take off his jacket and loosen his tie 😮

LancashireButterPie · 18/10/2025 18:56

Saw a group of older men in town the other day all in shirts, ties and jackets and thought how smart they looked. Then they tried to recruit me to the Jehovah's Witnesses.

Ah, this brings back the memory that my Mum and Dad came to meet my first baby in hospital, they brought my brother with them as he was living at home at that point. My Dad and my brother wore ties as is was an “important meeting” - I remember DH saying afterwards how lovely it was , and how my DB had gone along with my Mum and Dad’s expectation that they be dressed well for that first meeting. This was 2008 so not so long ago really.

Hotel staff, estate agents, secondary school teachers, politicians, the royal family, funeral directors, con men...

Anyone trying to create an aura of respectability.

Sandyshandy · 18/10/2025 19:36

Teachers, estate agents, used car salesmen…

MagnaICe · 18/10/2025 19:36

Actually old fashioned evangelical church preachers do

😂yes, it is an effort to look respectable and respecting the ones they meet, in this case deceivers

PotatoesAreLife · 18/10/2025 19:43

My husband is a senior manager in social care and wears a tie for meetings, about once or twice a week, but they are cartoon and silly ties! He loves to collect them. He says all the men tend to wear a tie to meetings at his level in the local authority.

ChiefCakeTestertoMaryBerry · 18/10/2025 20:52

No, but three-year-olds in nursery do!

The male teachers at my children’s school all wear ties. When it was 37C a few years ago the HT let the children wear their PE kit and the teachers casual clothes, but he still wore his tie! Why he didn’t just put a smart short-sleeved shirt on and ditch the tie I don’t know.

Some of the male senior leadership team in the council where I work wear suits and ties, but not all of them and not everyday. Councillors seem to wear suits and ties.

I used to work for a small charity and a couple of the elderly trustees (who have since died) wore shirts and ties every day.

wheresmymojo · 18/10/2025 21:30

I work in the City and it’s rare for anyone to wear a tie these days.

BigFatBully · 18/10/2025 21:36

RandomGeocache · 18/10/2025 13:08

DH is a senior manager and will only wear a tie when they have someone important visiting - like a MP or similar. Or for a funeral or wedding.

I am a charity shop volunteer and ties are almost impossible to sell.

Do you wear a shirt, blazer and cravat for your charity shop duties?😉

Growlybear83 · 18/10/2025 21:37

Most men I work with wear a tie. My husband wore one every day for work until he retired a couple of years ago.
