Do men still wear ties anywhere ?

childofthe607080s · 18/10/2025 13:06

Watching a 1980s video and men are wearing ties as normal every day wear

DH wore one to a wedding a few years ago , and funerals

I worked in tech so ties were kept in desk drawers for the one day a year they would be needed. Do younger men even have them?

The day after the late Queen died I wore a black tie and white shirt. People looked at me as if I'd come down from a cave in the mountains.

My young adult son has what I think is known as a “portfolio career” aka 5 part time jobs. He wears a tie for two of them.

ThatGlimmeringSea · 18/10/2025 21:54

I noticed a new neighbour wearing a suit and tie and carrying a briefcase and (correctly) guessed he must be an estate agent.

When I started work all the men had to wear ties but they had to be clip-on due to strangulation risk by our clients.

Jewelledslice · 18/10/2025 22:00

To weddings, funerals and christenings. And if they work in a law firm, accountancy firm or junior politics.

It's a shame IMO

Horsie · 18/10/2025 22:03

Nope. Standards are very low these days in all areas of life, imo - lower than they've ever been.

In terms of clothing, I think the pandemic turned many of us into lounge lizards. I see many more people wearing tracksuit bottoms or leggings in general instead of jeans, which I think wasn't so much the case before Covid.

sakura06 · 18/10/2025 22:22

I’m a teacher. Our male sixth formers and male teachers all have to wear a suit and tie. Quite anachronistic considering business dress these days.

My DH hasn't worn a tie in over 20 years. We have been to numerous weddings and funerals in that time.

Goodness my husband would be horrified at the idea of not wearing a tie at weddings and funerals and so would I.

UnderstoodBetsy · 18/10/2025 22:32

I'm an academic. None of my male colleagues wear ties.

It does seem odd that schoolchildren wear a version of adult attire that is disappearing rapidly in the adult work world.

Tbh I think the scruff trend is starting to reverse. I'm seeing new trainees wearing ties.

What "standard" is being upheld when a man ties a floppy piece of cloth around his neck?

Hotel staff, estate agents, secondary school teachers, politicians, the royal family, funeral directors, con men...

Anyone trying to create an aura of respectability.

Yeah.

I work in the City and it’s rare for anyone to wear a tie these days.

Yes, me too and agree it’s very rare.

BauhausOfEliott · 18/10/2025 23:45

Nobody wears them where I work. Even our CEO only ever wears one if he has a formal meeting in Whitehall or something. He takes it off when he gets back to the office.

DP doesn’t even wear them for weddings. I don’t think I’ve seen him in one since the last time he had a job interview, and that was in 2015.

“Lounge lizard” doesn't mean what you seem to think it means. In fact, a lounge lizard would probably have worn a tie!

Secondary school teachers - unless in PE kit etc

They didn’t at the school l taught in. Smart cas. No one worse a tie. Senior management would sometimes. But the rest wore shirts and jeans, with trainers. Or t shirts.

TrousersOfTime · 19/10/2025 01:07

Not all necessarily "real" ties (many will be clip on for safety) but:

  • secondary school teachers (already mentioned)
  • bus/coach drivers (depending on company)
  • councillors, MPs etc
  • quite a lot of men in local government on office days
  • security officers (depending on company)
  • funeral directors
  • brass band players (depending on band)
  • C suite (in many companies, at least for board meetings etc)
Sandyshandy · 19/10/2025 05:55

I’m really surprised people don’t wear them for weddings, rude imo. I’d be a bit miffed if was the bride, ties are a bit weird but still a sign of respect. I’ve never seen a tieless man at a wedding (apart from the vicar).

Zanatdy · 19/10/2025 07:47

Yes, my son wears one when seeing clients, otherwise his office wear (finance, London) is smart casual. But suits and ties still expected for meeting clients. No-one wears a suit anymore in my office but you’ll always see people wearing suits / ties for weddings, funerals, cruises, formal events.

Cyclingmummy1 · 19/10/2025 08:02

A suit every day for DS's sixth form. Black tie for their leaving events and shirt and tie for musical events.

He's taken it all to uni. We had to buy extra casual clothes before he left 😆

Ties are a component of smart dressing in our society, as you know. As to why, who knows. But they are. I suppose you could ask the same question about blazers, dresses, etc. In fact, you could ask that question about all items of clothing and wonder why we don't all go round in onesies, which would keep us warm and decent! Why do we need our clothes to be anything other than functional?

BilingualDoggo · 19/10/2025 08:24

Some older men seem to still wear them at weddings and funerals, but not many under 60. My children’s lecturers/teachers don’t wear them, and so many jobs require smart casual clothing now that it seems odd that ties are still part of school uniform.

I do like when my partner wears a suit with a shirt and no tie, and I like a shirt with a jumper on top, with no tie. I’m not a tie fan so hope they don’t come back.

Newmum738 · 19/10/2025 08:25

Interviews! Or if they don’t, they should. Always dress up for an interview.

FlatWhiteExtraHot · 19/10/2025 08:31

PistachioTiramisu · 18/10/2025 13:10

I actually did a double take the other day when I saw a man wearing a suit and tie walking down the road!! I do miss seeing men dressed smartly - I used to love seeing my husband in suit and tie. These days it's scruffy t-shirts and jeans - sigh!!

Men probably feel the same about women in trackies and fleeces. Luckily the age of dressing to please others is long gone.

PassOnThat · 19/10/2025 08:32

No, it's mostly school kids round here. Including 4yos. It's funny because my DC was told to stop waving a scarf about because it was a strangulation risk while round his neck, he had an ... even greater strangulation risk 🙄.

By the time most of these kids have learnt to tie their ties properly, they won't have to wear them anymore.

No, what I know is that ties have previously been a component of male smart dressing in our society but, in the last 10-20 years, as notions of status and formality have changed, they have been increasingly less so, such that wearing a tie can be a sign of low status e.g. the waiter serving the business leader wears a tie but the businessman doesn't.
