Have you ever chucked away? Half used perfume because it reminds you of something unpleasant?

Realise that one of my relatively expensive perfumes actually reminds me of a friend's addiction and that whole era of chaos .
I know I can do what I want, but it just seems so wasteful. I wanted to kind of rebrand it mentally in my head.!
so did you bin, give away carry on using?

No, but they don’t last that long anyway IMO so I often chuck them away because they’re past their best.

Pebblepoppy · 13/10/2025 12:04

Not recently, so the market may have changed, but I've successfully sold partially used perfumes on Ebay in the past.

In your circumstances I wouldn't use it, so I'd get rid one way or another.

EndlessDistraction · 13/10/2025 12:04

Yes, it was a fairly cheap one, but one of my colleagues who I didn't like started wearing it regularly and after that I just didn't want it any more. Can't remember what I did with it though.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 13/10/2025 12:08

Scents are so evocative of memories so I wouldn't wear one that gave me unpleasant ones .
A 10ml spray Liz Earle No15 ( actually I recycled rather than throw out ) . I'd used it years ago and loved it . Then later I don;t know if the scent changed or my sense of smell but it smelled like rubber .

isthismylifenow · 13/10/2025 12:11

I have given perfumes away and also sold some on.

I have only even thrown one away, and that is because it turned so badly and was just unusable.

I would struggle to throw something perfectly good away.

Tralalalama · 13/10/2025 12:17

Recycle at perfume shop or sell on Vinted

mulberrybag · 13/10/2025 12:18

I always wish there was a ‘swap/donate’ site for perfumes/clothing/jewellery that we for one reason or another can’t bear to wear any longer. A few of my favourite perfumes I feel are now unwearable due to my brain associating them with a person/time in my life that I don’t want to be reminded of!

Cornflakegirl7 · 13/10/2025 12:20

I wouldn't throw it away but if it deeply unsettled me smelling it I'd stick it on ebay or give it away to a friend or someone.

romdowa · 13/10/2025 12:21

Yes ! I went for dinner one new years eve and wore a ted Baker perfume that I had gotten for Christmas. The restaurant served me food which contained one of my allergens (which I had notified them of ) and I nearly died. After that I could never wear that perfume again because the smell reminded me of that night.

buymeflowers · 13/10/2025 12:22

I would normally pass on but literally I’ve just thrown one out this morning for this very reason

TheChosenTwo · 13/10/2025 12:26

I had to pass on a perfume to a friend because i was wearing it one night and ended up in bed all the next day with a hangover and all I could smell was the very strong perfume I had put on the night before. I felt rather ill and the smell kept appearing and I couldn’t stand it so the next day I gave it away!
Other than that though, I will pass on anything that I don’t like or want anymore so it’s not wasted. Unless it’s damaged etc.

wildlifeobserver1 · 13/10/2025 12:35

Yes I’ve passed two on as felt so awful when I could smell it! I couldn’t stand wearing it.

minishiteboard · 13/10/2025 12:38

ta everyone I think there's under half left so that no point putting it on Vinted. That's funny I love Liz number 15.

Edited

Which perfume is it?

Even if it is half full, someone may still want to purchase it from you.

unsync · 13/10/2025 12:48

I gave it to a colleague on the condition that she didn't wear it to work.

ThatLadyLady · 13/10/2025 12:50

Yes. I had a perfume I’d been wearing leading up to the death of my nan. Got rid because it reminded me of that.

FancyCatSlave · 13/10/2025 12:51

Yes. I threw out my wedding perfume recently as part of my divorce. I just can’t wear it.
I also threw out a load of fragranced things my ex MIL bought me because I can’t stand have anything from her in the house. I’m not usually wasteful but it was very healing.

Strokethefurrywall · 13/10/2025 12:58

Yep, I haven’t chucked it but I don’t wear Rose by Paul Smith anymore because I wore it when I first got pregnant and it reminds me of throwing up constantly at my office.
Similar for nappy bags that are “scented” 🤢

Chanel will definitely sell.

minishiteboard · 13/10/2025 14:28

Gosh.

I used to love a particular perfume but when I was pregnant the smell made me feel sick. Many years ago, but I can’t smell it now without feeling slightly queasy.

BauhausOfEliott · 13/10/2025 14:37

Not recently - but many years ago I had the women's perfume version of the aftershave my then boyfriend wore, and I chucked it away when he dumped me.

I would definitely sell, give away or bin a perfume that reminded me of unhappy times.

ALittleBitofWensleydale · 13/10/2025 14:37

I had to go a number of post mortems for work ( don’t ask!). I covered a hanky with Diorissimo which was my favourite perfume at the time to mask the scent.
Big mistake…. I had to give the bottle away.
