Help! My face is collapsing…

…what should I do?

lighthearted, but whilst have always taken a keen interest in my appearance I’ve been lucky enough to never really need make up (not a stunner by any means, but have reasonably good genes meaning a bit of vaseline for lip gloss and eyeliner rendered me passable). However, recent photos of me at parties have been horrifying!

i’m late forties, combination skin (but now leaning towards dry) and a runner (which I have read is terrible for making you jowl-y). Also still love a good dance and drink into the wee small hours, which doesn’t help either my skin, or my paranoia that I am starting to stand out as an old hag! Have watched a load of tik toks and you tube vids on contouring for the more mature woman and have had a bash with some sticks and powders, but it seems to makes all my lines worse.

Final point I suppose is that I am pretty time poor so don’t have hours every morning to put on a full face of slap…I really need a slick 10-15 minutes routine tops if possible!

Not averse to a spot of chemical enhancement, but would prefer not to if possibly. What can I do to help my look as young as I still feel? All advice and product recommendations welcomed please 🙏

Stop looking in mirrors. Leave the house only between dusk and dawn.

InsectsMatter · 08/10/2025 16:34

Eva Fraser’s facial exercises.
And stop running!

Foreo bear?

You will notice that all these contour to get rid of a double chin, sagging etc people do not have double chins or sagging before the contour goes on!

I don't know either. I'm only 40 but I was on some medication that made me gain weight and my face go all puffy for a couple of years. Now I've lost some of the weight and de-puffed my face also seems to have collapsed!

A tight ponytail might work! Grin

What is your current skincare regime?

Summerhillsquare · 08/10/2025 19:58

Retinol, SPF, vitamin c face creams.

Please ignore the stop running "advice". Running doesn't cause skin to sag.

I just need a fat face. Not a fat body, just the face. Anyone I know that has such a face looks half their age and is relatively wrinkly and line free. Mine is long and skinny following an illness, and honestly I just cannot do anything about it now. The fat will not go back to my cheeks. So I've accepted it now.

YYYDlilah · 08/10/2025 20:33

Same here @inamo . I look like a bloodhound.

It's a bit of a trial to look at myself now, but hey I'm alive so that's good! Anyway, my late father used to call anyone with a long thin face "Lantern Jaws", we used to kill ourselves laughing at this when we were young, but I fit the bill now!

Onwards and upwards.

I am 42, time poor, never really wearmake up either, a bit of mascara and some eyeliner once in a blue moon but that’s as sophisticated as my make up routine gets, and I have lost 135lb over the last couple of years so my neck/chin area has been through through it, plus I have a job that involves being annoyed a lot so spend a considerable amount of time scowling.

I really did try to get into a skin care routine and develop a make up look, but it turns out I can’t be bothered. So I go and get a very small amount of Botox every 3-4 months just the reduce the 11 lines. I can still move my eyebrows and show expressions but it just lightly smoothies things out and leaves me looking less angry and tired. I get my eyebrows threaded at a brow bar for £6 every 6 weeks at the local retail park, having neat and tidy eyebrows does make a surprising difference I’ve found.

I also put tubs of this moisturiser in my car, the downstairs toilet, the bathroom, my bedroom, on my office desk and in the kitchen. That way when I remember I was supposed to moisturise I can just do it there and then https://www.amazon.co.uk/Simple-Brightening-Moisturiser-Antioxidant-Vitamins/dp/B0D1VGTSGH/ref=asc_df_B0D1VGTSGH?mcid=95fae93cefe23499b5f71828d5535089&th=1&hvocijid=1936276256662052780-B0D1VGTSGH-&hvexpln=74&tag=googshopuk-21&linkCode=df0&hvadid=696285193871&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=1936276256662052780&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=1006886&hvtargid=pla-2281435177378&gad_source=1

Ive tried loads of different moisturisers and really haven’t noticed one being any better than the other, but I have discovered I prefer gel based ones as they feel refreshing and soak in quick without leaving a residue.

I read that Rooibos tea helps maintain facial fat. Don't know if that is true but I drink a cup at least once a day and still have a plump face at 48.

mdinbc · 08/10/2025 21:10

I'm early 60's and definitely have the sagging sort of skin. Haven't had any injectables at all, but do my best with facial exercise in the morning (15 each of three different ones, it takes no time at all).

Good skin care doesn't need to be very expensive. Cleanse, moisturize that includes sunscreen, and a good serum for night. I've been using Vichy Liftactive Vitamin C.

Very simple makeup routine including tinted moisturizer (with sunscreen), smudgeable liner, mascara and tinted lip balm. Love Clinique Black Cherry Almost Lipstick.

If you can find a tinted moisturizer with a 'glow' it is beneficial. I use a Canadian brand Marcelle, but try Nars Pure Radiant Tinted Moisturizer or Charlotte Tilbury Healthy Glow.

It's in the genes.
The only thing that will help is a face-lift.

Make-up takes me about 3 minutes: foundation, under eye concesler' highlighter on cheekbones, chubby stick on cheeks, dusting of translucent powder, slick of Mascara, bit of lippy.

Clinique take off the day to take it off, wash off with warm water and a face flannel.
Estee under eye cream, estee night cream. Wash face in the morning. Estee day cream.

I've gone from pretty to potato 😅i have a facelift booked for next year.

lifeonmars100 · 08/10/2025 21:32

I could weep when I look in the mirror but that would only make me look even worse! I have taken great care of my skin and tbh I think it was all a total waste of time and money or maybe I would look even more horrific if I hadn't bothered. I was a looker when young, it was the thing that everyone always commented on but I never enjoyed being good looking as I aways knew it was a temporary thing and an accident of birth. I was never one for make up but I remember a girl at college asking me to do her make up and when I said I couldn't because I did not wear any she said "you mean you just look like that?"

No way could I afford botox let alone a face lift so I just check the mirror a couple of times a day to make sure I am presentable and not going to scare animals and small children. Clean and decent are my watchwords these days

Imagine a men’s forum… would this thread exist in that world??!! 😆

IsItBeesThoughLooshkin · 08/10/2025 21:42

It’s so individual. Some people will look better with their eyebrows done, others have no eyebrows to speak of. Going blonder and using some tanning drops in my moisturiser worked for me recently, but that’s because it suits my colouring. I don’t bother with expensive creams that may or may not result in any visible changes and instead I get Botox which makes me look less tired and worn out. I think that’s probably the only thing that works for everyone, or at least for most people.

IsItBeesThoughLooshkin · 08/10/2025 21:44

Oh and I also wear SPF50 every day. But I still have sun spots. 🫩

No, but the pounding on the ground can't be good for your face (or knees) and as for runner's face......

Frogs88 · 08/10/2025 21:58

Retinol (prescription tretinion) and sunscreen.

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 08/10/2025 22:03

Skincare - cleanse (double cleanse at night), vitamin c in the morning, retinol/retinal at night, moisturise, spf in the day time (every day, even in winter). A gentle acid toner 2 or 3 times a week.

Avoid heavy make up that sits in your lines. And magic contouring fixes. Try a bb or cc cream (I like erborian), a decent concealer, get your brows done if they need a bit of shape. Light simple make up.

Drink lots of water. Always cleanse at night.

Try that for a few months and see if it makes a difference. If not, decide to grow old gracefully and not give a fuck, or avoid mirrors, or wear a bag over your head, or try Botox, or fancy facials, or save up for a facelift.

Keep running. Add in some strength exercise if you don’t already. (Won’t make you happier with your face, but it’s good for). Dance into the wee small hours as long as you can! (But alternate boozy drinks with water, alcohol is not a friend of your face, they properly fall out the older you get).
