Anyone wear their hair up most of the time?

Or tied back, etc, And prefer it?
Mine is mid length, own colour and a bit unmanageable. It always takes some work whatever I do to wear it loose. But I have probably been taken in over the years by the idea that nice healthy hair is worn loose. I know, it's daft. My hair has a nice thickness and is a good colour and looks decent in various updo's but I am not used to it and tend to keep fighting to wear it down,.

I am outdoors a lot and I do like to wear hats in winter when it gets very windy so this is probably why I tend to wear it loose. DH suggested whimsical earmuffs so no help there! I am asking the more sensible members of mumsnet to see what you think!

I used to constantly wear mine up in a scruffy bun as it looked awful down. It just looked...meh?

Got a wolfcut and now i hate it up and love it down 😃

I had my long layered very thick hair cut to my shoulders recently and it was a big mistake. Really hard to make it look good 😒
Wish I had a wolf cut.

You can get hats with holes for ponytails!

Haha I can't see me in one of those, I am not that adventurous! I once had one of those hiker bands made of wool, covered my ears but left my hair free, but it was so so itchy.

Just looked up double Dutch braiding. How do people do this on themselves
it’s gorgeous

That one's when you cross over hair from the other side of the head into the Dutch braid going down one side. You need plenty of styling cream for that.

My usual double dutch is one going down each side divided by a center part.

I always wear my hair up. My mother always insisted it was to be tied back when I was younger as she hated the look of long hair worn loose, so now I can’t stand it being in my face and I have sensory issues with the feeling of it on my neck. I’d like to do nicer updos rather than just a ponytail or claw clip though.

Exactly like me, I can't stand hair on my neck. Wore it up for years and years and finally got it chopped into a pixie cut with it completely shaved back and sides.

ME! 👋Grin

I am - late 50s - and have thick, wavy, mousy, blonde hair, that is around 2-3" below my shoulders. I wear it up almost always. I have seen pictures of me with it down, and to be quite honest it looks shite. 😆 It used to look good down/long, pre when I was in my 50s, but it just looks a bit meh now.

Some people wonder what the point is in having long hair when you have it up 90% of the time, but as a pp said, long-ish hair in a messy bun/up/in a plait or ponytail on the top or back of your head, looks completely different to short hair. Hell will freeze over before I have short hair.

I made a mess of my hair several years ago, by bleaching it too much, and I had to have about 6" cut off before it started to recover. The hairdresser said, every one of the 4 times I went - over 1 year - that I should have it cut short, in an inverted bob, LOL, no thanks 😂 I despise that hairstyle with a passion!

It's only this past half a year that I've been able to grow it a bit and have the big messy bun again!

Longer hair is way more versatile than short, and much easier to manage, When the hairdresser cut my hair - to about 1" below my earlobes - I couldn't do anything with it, and it went all curly... I looked like Harpo friggin' Marx! 😬I think she either wants me too look like a twat, or she just wants to make money from me, by making me go there every 6-7 weeks to keep the inverted bob look.

I wear these looks often. (The up-do blonde looks.) The Subo pic is how my hair looked when the hairdresser had finished with it each time! Hence I've not been back since about March, as I wanted it to get a bit longer.

Either way I can’t even manage a single plait.

Subo looks to have taken solid ownership of her 'do' in that pic Grin

Your description sounds exactly like mine. Same hair, although early 50's, it being pretty much meh when shorter. I do like how having more texture makes it easier to mould though, and it is so easy to straighten if i want that, too. I also feel odd with it worn loose, it looks fab from the front but a bit dull from the back. I can get a good swish from heatless curls for special occasions but prefer it up day to day.

I love a messy updo.

I have very long thick hair and it's either worn in a high pony tail or in a bun. I cannot work with my hair done at all it gets in the way and irritates my neck. I also wear it up loose in a scrunchy in bed. my hair is only down when am going out or had it coloured and cut

outerspacepotato · 28/09/2025 21:45

Can you do a center part and braid each side with the hair a little more to your front?

If you can, you can do space buns or cross the braids over the front of your head and pin in place and voila, Heidi.

Or one ponytail on top of your head, braid down, then wrap it into a bun and pin.

I’ve never seen this before! I can do two Dutch braids but it has a regular straight parting whereas this seems to be crossed over on the parting somehow. I’ll have to find a video tutorial for this!

For those of you who wear it up, what do you do if out walking in the cold weather, do you wear a hat?

I never ever wear a hat. I never need one. I don't get cold that easily, and having a hat on makes me so hot! Even in the proper cold weather!

Yep, we do sound pretty similar. Smile Having more hair leaves you with so many more options! Grin

ThatOneStupidPheasant · 28/09/2025 22:15

I wish mine was properly thick though, it's just poofy so looks bigger.

Interesting about not wearing hats.
I had not thought of that, and to tell the truth I actually don't much like them, even a lovely clean one can make freshly washed hair small stale after a few hours (especially hiking).

I do get insanely painful earlobes when there's a cold wind, always have, so do need a solution. Maybe I could wear a scarf and hoik it up to my earholes??? Mmm..

Any ideas how to keep ears warm without a hat? And don't say muffs Grin

you can get large like wooly hair bands. primark do them. so your ears are covered. I not a lover if hats as it with my hair hard to get one that fits with making me look like marge Simpson

I do get cold ears actually @ThatOneStupidPheasant but only when it's like, below 5C outside! To be fair, I do sometimes wear a waterproof coat in the cold and the rain, and put the hood up, so I guess that kind of counts as a hat, sort of. Grin

ThatOneStupidPheasant · 28/09/2025 22:24

Thanks! I hate headbands though and don't suit them either. A hat sticks up just enough to make my face look ok. Can't properly explain that!

I think maybe just pushing a big scarf up to my ears might suffice, I do love a big scarf or snood.

I don't really suit them either but with walking dogs abd feeding horses in middle of winter needs must. override what looks OK. I detest the cold and my ears get really sore when cold.
I am sure that look fab on you

I wear mine up all the time now but wear it down if going out as for some reason as well, I see hair down as the "healthy" option for going out. How can I change this mindset? Do many people wear it up for going out out now? For dinner or drinks for example.

whattheysay · 28/09/2025 22:39

A bit of both. I love my hair down but in my day to day life it annoys me so I’ll put it up. If I go out somewhere it’s usually down

Theresabatinmykitchen · 28/09/2025 22:39

I wear my hair loose with a hat in winter like this picture, I thought this is what most people did as it’s quite a ubiquitous look, keeps my hair out of my face and my ears warm as well.

Not so much healthy as just a societal standard probably, we just associate loose hair with glamour and partying. Whilst 'fine' dining might require a recklessly chic updo, to show off your lovely neck Grin

Yes exactly this. The associating it with what hair should be like for partying! My hair looks a mess down and I end up applying more heat on it trying to style it for going out then hating how it looks
