Anyone wear their hair up most of the time?

Or tied back, etc, And prefer it?
Mine is mid length, own colour and a bit unmanageable. It always takes some work whatever I do to wear it loose. But I have probably been taken in over the years by the idea that nice healthy hair is worn loose. I know, it's daft. My hair has a nice thickness and is a good colour and looks decent in various updo's but I am not used to it and tend to keep fighting to wear it down,.

I am outdoors a lot and I do like to wear hats in winter when it gets very windy so this is probably why I tend to wear it loose. DH suggested whimsical earmuffs so no help there! I am asking the more sensible members of mumsnet to see what you think!

I wear mine up most of the time because it's long, and actually it's not good for your hair to be worn down if it is quite long. I protect it from breakage and getting snagged on things. (Also, it's very irritating to have it floating about)

I like Lainey Ostrom on Youtube for very quick (1 minute) updos! I can't be bothered with a lot of faffing

Betsylee · 28/09/2025 15:38

I've started wearing mine up with a scrunchie with hair on! It's so much easier and after over forty years my husband says he prefers it. I think, like you, I used to always wear mine down and it used to get everywhere! If I'm going out I'll wear it down but I have worn it up and received good comments. I don't know why I felt conditioned to always wear it down.

ThatOneStupidPheasant · 28/09/2025 15:39

Thank you I will look her up!
I look terrible in hats when my hair is back off my face or maybe I should employ hoods on those days..

I hadn't thought of damage when worn loose but I actually do find it can snap sometimes in winter when tucked under scarves and heavier coats. Food for thought.

I wear mine up pretty much 24/7 (not white because I take it out when I go to bed). I hate the feeling of it falling in my face etc.

Yes! Mine is forever in my eyes and mouth, it is very fine but sort of big.
I see other people out and about with loose hair and it never seems to be all over their face in the wind.

I always wear my hair up. My mother always insisted it was to be tied back when I was younger as she hated the look of long hair worn loose, so now I can’t stand it being in my face and I have sensory issues with the feeling of it on my neck. I’d like to do nicer updos rather than just a ponytail or claw clip though.

Hallywally · 28/09/2025 16:06

Yes it just gets on my nerves if I can feel it on my face. Recently had it cut shortish as it was in poor condition and I really miss being able to sweep it all back 😢

SliceofTosst · 28/09/2025 16:10

Probably 50:50.

Alltheburpees · 28/09/2025 16:22

I do. It’s really tricky hair but if I keep it longer it’s much easier to manage. It’s always up in a claw or a pony tail.

ThatOneStupidPheasant · 28/09/2025 16:36

Thanks everyone.
Just used pinterest and got some decent results for a change Grin

Typed in winter updo, and mature messy updo, it helps to put mature as you actually get people over 25! Some great ideas.

I do think I will keep it longer since it is easier to keep it out of my face. Any encouragement to get in my eyes and it's there!

Maybe I would have to wear it loose on very windy days? My ears really hurt in cold winds.

I do. Just can't deal with anything else at the moment.

tunainatin · 28/09/2025 16:40

Yes I do, I think it suits me better up. People sometimes question why you would have long hair only to wear it up, but in my opinion long hair up is a very different look to short hair!

Livpool · 28/09/2025 16:42

I wear mine down most of the time - unless I am very hot. If up, I can only wear it with a claw clips as bobbles pull on my hair

RightOnTheEdge · 28/09/2025 16:43

I have my hair up virtually all the time.
As I've got older I hate it touching me, it's annoying, I just want it out of my way. I can't stand it down when I'm too hot and sweaty which is most of the time.

ThatOneStupidPheasant · 28/09/2025 17:03

I quite like these styles

I’m constantly scragging it back with a scrunchie and feel like I need to make more effort. I pay a bomb for cut and colour but then once I’m busy with normal life I just don’t have time to do much. Like others, I hate the feeling of it on my face and neck and there’s a lot of it. My peri-menopausal hair seems to be a bit fluffy and not sleek so I’m definitely not making the most of myself. A bit of wax to flatten it then leaves it feeling a bit greasy for the next day. Following for a few tips…

Letmehaveabloodyusernameplease · 28/09/2025 17:18

Mine's always up, either in a ponytail or a clawclip.

Cantseetreesforthewood · 28/09/2025 17:26

Mines always up.
It has to be for work - tho the style depends on the ppe I need to wear that day. Hard hats require a low bobble or clip. My current jacket seems to require a highbobble only.

I'm so used to it now, I wear it back at the weekend too. Tried it short for a bit, but couldn't keep ontop of the appointments, so grew it long again.

CalzoneOnLegs · 28/09/2025 17:28

@ThatOneStupidPheasant the first (largest) photo she has incredibly thick hair ❤️

Upupdo · 28/09/2025 17:31

I’ve got long and thick hair, but I never wear it down. It’s been up every day, at least since I started secondary school. I’m 38 now. I hate the look and feeling of having my hair down, though it always looks lovely on other people!

ThatOneStupidPheasant · 28/09/2025 17:32

I think it helps to have a bit of texture to the hair so the styles don't just want to tumble down. A bugger in harsh winds though, I've had a heavy clip pulled out more than once.
Yes, perhaps harder to do if hair is very fine. Mine isn't thick but it is fairly fluffy and plump, lol.

I too don't like the feel of hair all over my face or neck. It never used to bother me but I am much more sensitive to things like that as I have grown older.

I did until I got a Shark hairdryer. X

DrPrunesqualer · 28/09/2025 17:36

Always had short back and sides type cut till Covid. Now enjoying not paying £60 for a cut that no hairdresser has ever done the way I want
So I now keep it up
If I had it down I’d look like Professor Trelawny ( whose actually on tv at this very moment 🤣)

ThatOneStupidPheasant · 28/09/2025 17:48

I often think the 'Shark/Dyson fixed my life posts' are ads in disguise Grin

I have tried both and no different to my old Parlux.
I did have more joy with a heated ceramic brush though.
