Anyone wear their hair up most of the time?

Or tied back, etc, And prefer it?
Mine is mid length, own colour and a bit unmanageable. It always takes some work whatever I do to wear it loose. But I have probably been taken in over the years by the idea that nice healthy hair is worn loose. I know, it's daft. My hair has a nice thickness and is a good colour and looks decent in various updo's but I am not used to it and tend to keep fighting to wear it down,.

I am outdoors a lot and I do like to wear hats in winter when it gets very windy so this is probably why I tend to wear it loose. DH suggested whimsical earmuffs so no help there! I am asking the more sensible members of mumsnet to see what you think!

I look frightful with my hair up, so it’s always down unless I’m at the gym or in bed.

TheChosenTwo · 28/09/2025 17:52

It’s usually up, it’s really quite long and much easier to deal with it when it’s long as it’s easy to clip up.
Every time I go shorter I curse myself that the up hairstyles look less tidy!!

ThatOneStupidPheasant · 28/09/2025 17:54

For those of you who wear it up, what do you do if out walking in the cold weather, do you wear a hat?

Yep all the time. Only wear it down if I am going out.

I have to for work (hospitality that often involves food service) for a start. I had it cut very short after a bleaching disaster during covid but have grown it back out because I found that short hair was much more work than long. It has to be "done" to look ok, but with long hair its so easy to bung it in a bun or pony tail.

PyongyangKipperbang · 28/09/2025 17:54

The hat issue is annoying! I find that a low bun helps or a plait.

DriveVerySlowlyPastNumber23IWantThemToSeeMyHat · 28/09/2025 17:55

I used to constantly wear mine up in a scruffy bun as it looked awful down. It just looked...meh?

Got a wolfcut and now i hate it up and love it down 😃

OhDear111 · 28/09/2025 17:57

Tied back hair often looks great with hats. My beanies ride up and perch on top when my hair is down. Mine is long enough to be tied back or clipped up and I hate it blowing in my face when it’s down. I just like it being neat. Hairdresser tomorrow so it will be down for a few days! They finish it better than me.

DrPrunesqualer · 28/09/2025 17:58

Always wear hats
wooly or a fedora.

I rarely leave the house without one whatever the weather.

NegroniMacaroni · 28/09/2025 17:59

Ive given up wearing my down, it takes too much work and I hate when it gets blown in my face.
I save lots by cutting my own hair - doesn't matter what it looks like as it's always up! (I did invest in proper hairdressing scissors as it makes a difference to split ends)

outerspacepotato · 28/09/2025 18:09

I wear mine up or pulled back because I worked critical care for so long I don't like it falling in my face.

I do multiple types of braids, knot my hair, updos. One of my favorites is double dutch braiding or doing two strands rolling from the top front and slowly incorporating all my hair. It leaves me with Restoration style hair when I take it out.

I knit my own hats and they're fairly stretchy so updo is underneath.

ThatOneStupidPheasant · 28/09/2025 18:21

I hike a lot in winter, and for some reason always wear it loose under a hat.

I discovred earlier this year that any moisture in the air or wind was just wrapping it around my face and making it puff up. It now makes me understand why a lot of hikers wear it braided. Not sure why that took me so long.

Oh that sounds lovely!
I can't do a decent fancy braid to save my life, I would love two french plaits but I can never get them right. I can't get a perfect parting. Haven't even attempted Dutch!

I do all the time for work for practical reasons and I also don't like the feel of hair on my face.

I prefer it down though

flippyflopss · 28/09/2025 18:35

i use a claw clip for mine.
I look rough with it down it gets in the way.

vinylvibes · 28/09/2025 18:39

50:50. Depends on my mood lol

LemondrizzleShark · 28/09/2025 18:42

I have thick curly hair just below my shoulders, and it is tied up in a low bun (with a hair elastic) about 90% of the time. Keeps it out of the way at work, stops it getting frizzy overnight, generally easier than loose hair.

This photo isn’t me, but she had hair almost exactly the same as mine, in a style almost exactly the same as I wear.

DrPrunesqualer · 28/09/2025 18:55

Just looked up double Dutch braiding. How do people do this on themselves
it’s gorgeous

I’ve got long and thick hair, but I never wear it down. It’s been up every day, at least since I started secondary school. I’m 38 now. I hate the look and feeling of having my hair down, though it always looks lovely on other people!

Me too word for word (but I’m a bit older than 38!)

Hatty65 · 28/09/2025 20:08

Plait with a hat. (If out in the wind)

Weirdly I can french plait my hair in one plait down the back - but I can't do anyone else's. I'm used to plaiting backwards, I think.

I could not manage two - and those Dutch braids look fab but utterly impossible for me.

Hatty65 · 28/09/2025 20:11

I wear mine like this a lot.

You can do two strands and roll one over the other, it's really easy.

Check out Heatless wavy hair rope braid tutorial.

Could you recommend one please? Just had a search and there are a lot!!

I just grab, twist and claw it up every day - my hair that is 😊
