Morning!
A new thread. Autumn beckons, lets hope we get some interesting looks to discuss!

There's some lovely insect brooches Camilla if you're about.

Some ugly 70s style pieces as well. Some lovely art deco rings

Cassiope · 22/10/2025 08:14

I reckon Camilla might enjoy wearing the spider charm (the spiders are small enough to be cute rather than gothic).

I would happily offer the citrine bees a home, but for me the standout is the limpet brooch (186). It is wonderful - very detailed and naturalistic, yet so beautiful. I wanted to like the dragonfly, because of the intricacy, but the eyes are much too small and part of the appeal is the naturalistic design and detail and so the eyes being so wrong would irritate me every time I saw it.

Maireas · 22/10/2025 08:36

Yes, I like the citrine bees, and the ruby and diamond double headed snake ring.
Also, the coral pieces are usual, and would certainly add colour.

I wonder if DH would be up for bidding on one of the fabulous amethyst rings for my up coming birthday? 🟣

I think they might be a smidge out of his budget.

Hasn't he got a kidney to sell? Come on, mate.

I doubt anyone would pay for his kidneys they have been 'well used'.
The kids on the other hand......

I want the amethyst and diamond square ring and the citrine bees.

We should clearly put in a group bid for the bees!

Does anyone have a nice flower brooch to complement them (a thistle, maybe - good for pollinators, ornamental enough for a brooch...)?

justasking111 · 22/10/2025 10:14

I've followed jewellery auctions for years. Any sales in the run up to Christmas go crazy. I suspect a lot of husbands throw money at the item just to solve the what to get her problem 😂😂

Well my DH has never cottoned on to this. Where are these mythical husbands and how does one ensnare them? 😆

Eaumyword · 22/10/2025 11:07

I think I prefer the approach of a long marriage where I just buy exactly what present I'd love on my own chosen budget and DH just says oh jolly good! 😆😆

Maireas · 22/10/2025 11:10

My DH goes to these local auctions and buys antique jewellery - often not expensive, but he's found some really lovely and unusual pieces.

I've got one of these mythical husbands 😂

Now if I wanted a drill, chainsaw, tractor he'd be inspired. He struggles otherwise. He does it, but it takes him hours, of walking around shops. So occasionally I send him wishlist links to stuff

Chesticles · 22/10/2025 11:13

The auctionhouse's decision to photograph the jewellery with various fruit and veg is is a bit weird. Maybe I'm just not creative enough to apprecitate it!

Maireas · 22/10/2025 11:18

Yes, an interesting artistic touch!

Apparently something similar happens with books - I seem to remember reading that 50% of book sales (ordinary books, not antiquarian stuff) are made in December.

Books haha I've just bought seven. Five for grandchildren, one for DH and one for middle son 😂

justasking111 · 22/10/2025 14:47

My last good jewellery find was my local hospice online eBay. I was obviously the only one who clocked it.

TiarasAndKittenHeels · 22/10/2025 15:06

Hello @Maireas and all! Had a bit of a break from MN (have missed you/this thread!) and was prompted to jump back on by the recent unfortunate event at the Louvre.

What a loss of those beautiful pieces and all that priceless history and heritage. And they weren't insured either!

Hope everyone is well.

Maireas · 22/10/2025 15:08

Afternoon, @TiarasAndKittenHeels ! 👋
I suppose you were nowhere near the Louvre at the time?.😎

OP posts:
WarrenTofficier · 22/10/2025 15:12

I'm sure DH would be happy to buy me a lot from from an auction if I pointed him in the right direction but I didn't notice anything in the catalogue that would fall within our (modest) budget.

bluegreygreen · 22/10/2025 16:12

Our local auction house has regular jewellery sales. We have bought a few things at not very high prices - recently a lovely Art Nouveau pendant by Charles Horner (not in the same league as the Louvre items, but still beautiful).
