Wedding guest dress issues

I will be attending a wedding in a few weeks.

I am having difficulty with dresses. I bought a dress that was like a blush pink and I like the dress but apparently it doesn't suit me because I have pale skin and it washes me out and I look naked in it. I still didn't get time to return it.

I bought another dress. A navy dress. I tried it on yesterday. I tried it on over my clothes that I was wearing for the day which was a cotton dress. Nothing too bulky. The dress has a zip at the back and found the area with the zip and the band tight. The dress fits me perfectly in the neck and arms and skirt part. It's a great size. I found the zip was tight. It definitely won't be comfortable for a long wedding day. Should I try it on with a slip instead of my ordinary clothes. Would that be better?

Or should I return it for something else?

I am really having a hard time trying to find something.

Why on earth would you try it on over clothes?

PlanterPot · 21/09/2025 08:49

This is the navy dress that I bought. Do you see the band under the bust there? It is that area that feels tight.

I was wearing clothes and I was lazy and tired to remove them.

Well obviously you need to try it on without clothes before deciding Confused

Do it now, before getting dressed for the day?

CosmopolitanCocktail · 21/09/2025 09:19

Weird. Too lazy to take clothes off but not to post on an internet forum and ask for help.

GiantMoa · 21/09/2025 09:20

I don't think anyone can possibly comment on the fit when you were trying it on over another dress.

MiniCoopers · 21/09/2025 09:33

I am struggling to understand your logic. Of course it doesn’t bloody fit properly with other clothes underneath

I'm not at home right now or for the rest of the day.

My clothes were not bulky.

I will try it on properly later over a slip dress.

I wonder would that be better or should I start looking for another dress

But you need to be in the same room as the dress in order to return it so try it on first. Then return it if it is too tight.

PlanterPot · 21/09/2025 09:37

Just in case I need to find another dress

I am knitting a navy bolero which I was going to wear with my pink dress. In case I need to get another dress - what will look good with a navy bolero? Would an emerald green be good?

You could order it in the next size up in the meantime if you are concerned about time.

GiantMoa · 21/09/2025 09:37

Even a lightweight dress is going to add enough bulk to make it potentially not fit properly, especially with the fitted waistband. Also, do you really need a slip under it, is it very see through?

MiniCoopers · 21/09/2025 09:37

the only thing you should wear to try on another outfit is underwear … it’s just not possible otherwise and makes no sense .. of course it won’t fit you!

I am apprehensive ordering it in next size up because I think the bust and arms might be too big then.

Do I have some hope of this navy dress being less tight around the band without wearing a layer of clothes?

It's not see through. I like wearing slips under dresses. I think the slip clings to all the curves and then the dress fits properly.

Well yes, obviously!

but it depends how tight it was as to whether it makes enough difference

It depends. I don't have the boobs so I felt more comfortable pulling the bodice down where the band was stitting a few inches above my belly button. That's where it was tight.

When I left it under the boobs, it was more comfortable.

Why on earth are you asking people if you should try the dress on without clothes underneath? Just try the dress on properly like every single person does

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 21/09/2025 09:56

Is this for real? You’re being absolutely ridiculous.

Try both dresses on when you get home - wear nothing but knickers and a good bra underneath. Post headless photos on here, if you want, so people can comment on fit.

Every unlined dress is better with a slip. A sliphowever won't make the slightest difference to the size needed.

I think if this dress didn't have a zip it would be perfect for me. It's the zip and that band under the bust that makes it feel tight just right there.

I won't be at home today to try it on.

I wonder how will I plan going forward for this wedding. Will I get another dress? Return this one. I have no idea.

I have this dress at home and I love it. I wore it a few times already. Would I be able to wear it again for another event. I have gold shoes. I wonder would a gold pashmina work or a black pashmina?

I wasn't suggesting that the slip would add a lot of bulk, that was a separate question.
