Is DD right about this dress? (Light-hearted)

https://joanieclothing.com/celia-birtwell-x-joanie-golden-slumbers-flared-sleeve-ruffle-neck-wrap-dress.html

I bought this for various Christmas parties. I love it, having a weakness for hippyish, Stevie Nicks-in-the-1970s getups. My daughter (8, sarcastic, only prepared to wear black leggings) made a horrified face on seeing it. Which of us is right? (In case it helps, I'm slim and pretty flat, so the volumising effect of the ruffle isn't too problematic to my eye).

It's great, and seriously don't let your child speak to you like that. It's sort of cute and funny now but it's teaching really cruel tendencies which shouldn't be encouraged.

DancingNotDrowning · 22/09/2025 10:58

It’s ugly and has the dubious honour of being both simultaneously bizarrely “out there” and hideously drab.

Pulling off such a contradiction is quite the achievement

GMV42 · 22/09/2025 11:20

I love the dress it is gorgeous. I too, like quirky clothes and shoes. They add something a bit different to an ordinary outfit.

Epidote · 22/09/2025 12:01

I'm with your DD, I don't like it. But I'm short so that won't suit my body at all.

Gossipisgood · 22/09/2025 12:18

I really like it, however, it's not really very Christmassy so I'd personally not wear it to Christmas events.

Absentosaur · 22/09/2025 12:21

It’s the sort of dress you need to be young and gorgeous for. If you are - amazing I bet it’ll look fabulous. What’s young and gorgeous? Well that’s your call!

Bunny65 · 22/09/2025 12:56

Your daughter will want to borrow it when she’s older.

tinkerbelldot · 22/09/2025 13:08

I absolutely love it
Wear it with passion and enjoy 😊

Pinkclarko · 22/09/2025 14:59

SyntheticFluff · 22/09/2025 09:53

I think you're confusing Celia Birtwell for Patricia Field, who was the costume designer for SATC.

I like the dress, OP.

I very much did, didn’t I 😣

We aim to please!

There are plenty of neutral, tasteful dresses in the world - this is the sort of thing I would wear to work, since I'm a solicitor rather than owning a crystal and incense shop. But I definitely prefer something non-corporate on my days off. https://www.meandem.com/day-to-evening-textured-maxi-dress-intense-red

Well in that case why not. Sometimes bohemian other times classic. It’s nice to be able to pull through different styles. I would say don’t think too much if you love it.

blueshoes · 22/09/2025 21:14

I am disturbed that the model is slim but even she looks like she has a belly in that dress.

The sleeves will dip in your soup and coffee and sweep things to the floor.

samthepigeon · 22/09/2025 22:26

That is gorgeous! Go for it!

WhereAreMyAirpods · 23/09/2025 08:13

This thread is so funny.

Many posters on here recommend only shapeless sacks in black/grey or the most hideous "high fashion" items costing an arm and a leg which I would not be seen dead wearing. Then have a funny turn when a poster suggests something with a bit of colour and pattern. Posting things like "it's hideous, but you do you" is just nasty.

@ShiningShimmeringSplendid I have no idea how old you are, probably younger than me if you have an 8 year old. As you get older you definitely give less fucks about what other people think. I think your dress choice is perfect for a party. It's fun, colourful, you'll stand out from the crowds of greige. It would not suit me as I am too short and too boob-y, but that doesn't make the dress by default awful.

Shetlands · 23/09/2025 09:45

Celia Birtwell and Ossie Clark - what a blast from the past! I used to drool over Ossie's dresses!

I'm not mad about the dress in question but would probably like it in a different colour palette. I think the model looks great in it!

henlake7 · 23/09/2025 09:53

oh, yes! The sack dresses. They are always from some very expensive company and look like something you made at school in sewing class!
Or people recommend trousers as stylish and comfortable and they are the kind of wide legged jersey jobs that my 80 yr old mum wears coz they are easy to get to the toilet in!😂

Nothing wrong with that, we are all different after all.
Im def on the side of the magpies. The last trousers I bought had dragons embroidered down the sides (coz who doesnt want dragons on their trousers!😄) and the last dress, from Joanie of course, is covered in fried eggs...and looks fabulous on!
But I can already feel the shudders from the 'stylish' set!😁

It's a perfectly wearable dress. I'd wear it for a pub lunch or similar. I don't know why posters are saying it's bonkers/ nowhere to wear it.

As for free advertising Phase 8 is mostly absolutely hideous
"occasion" dresses which would make
me cry if I were forced to leave the house wearing them.Dancing Leopard and Yumi are the same they're constantly being pushed on here. Are they getting free advertising?

Another one is Hush. It looks like supermarket clothes to me.
Phase Eight has the odd nice item but the dresses give me 'mother of the bride' vibes.
Same with Per Una.

Sorry, forgot to clear the quote.

I always think Joanie clothes look cheap and tacky

Emanwenym · 23/09/2025 10:41

catmothertes1 · 21/09/2025 19:27

I was going to say this but I'm glad someone already said it! I don't remember my mother asking me for my opinion when she wanted to buy new clothes.

I just thought my mother wore nice clothes. (I don't think she thinks that about my clothesSmile)

I think of it as a bit of a novelty shop. I have a couple of their slogan jumpers as they are very on-message for my job. The cotton jersey sweatshirts wash very strangely and I have one which is now massive in the body but the sleeves have shrunk so badly that they only reach my elbows. The knitwear is all viscose and feels quite plasticky.

Mildredssecret · 23/09/2025 10:45

Yeah I ordered a dress from there ages ago and the quality was naff. It felt like it would bobble really quickly and hold a sweaty smell under the arms after a few wears!

Emanwenym · 23/09/2025 10:53

@Pinkclarko , some things on here like Toast, I keep looking at the links to see what it is I’m not getting but I’ll never understand the appeal. I think I might appreciate it if styled well on someone who suits it though.

I used to love getting the brochure, but I've not particularly fancied anything from their website for years. Did they have a change of leadership or something?

I think I'd need to see and try on the clothes. The quality is usually excellent but this TOAST Live | Join Our Upcoming Events | TOAST isn't selling it to me.

WhereAreMyAirpods · 23/09/2025 10:56

I have a tunic dress from Toast which is lovely. It was bought second-hand in a charity shop at least 8 years ago and is going strong. The quality is lovely, altyhough it says dry clean only I wash it at 30c and it's fine.

Not as keen on their current stuff but it's a lot better than some of the things that people link to.

Bollocks to that. I can be old and gorgeous in it if I choose to.

I think you’ll find I said what’s young and gorgeous is the call of who’s wearing it. Kind of the point I was making.

I'm with your daughter on this one. If I want an honest opinion on something I'm doubtful on, I ask one of my sons.

Yeah i don’t get the whole how dare an eight year old pass comment, I always commented on my daughters clothes and had no issue with her passing comment on mine, I also commented on her inteligence, kindness, work ethic, and everything else before anyone clutches their pearls. Appearance and how we present to the world, developing our own sense of style, is a key part of who we are and how we are perceived. People make assumptions based on appearance, and we also wish to feel at ease in how we present.

Thay doesn’t mean I took style advice from a child, I also commented on what my husband wears, he is more circumspect and basically tells me I look lovely all the time, where as I’m more, either you look great or you’re not seriously going out in that are you.,😂
