It’s a jeans one - again

I have no idea what kind of jeans to go for now the weather has changed and i can’t get away with my much loved denim shorts anymore.

I was still wearing my skinny’s this time last year but will only be slinging them on with long boots now.

I hate boot cut and wide leg. Look ridiculous in mom and barrel style.

I'm 5’6, just smaller than a 14 but a 12 is usually too tight. I’m hour glass shape with a fairly small waist and slim legs but i have x 2 babies c section overhang and wide hips.

I would in the main be wearing them day to day, taking kids to clubs, shopping, out for coffee or an informal lunch etc but not for work or going out out.

Maybe jeans just might not be for me anymore. In which case what do I wear?

Thoughts and ideas greatly appreciated.

Having lost quite a bit of weight. I’ve just been looking for me jeans myself thinking all of the above. I went to next and tried on a million pairs. The slim fit style seemed to work well and look really nice (no idea if they are fashionable, just what looked nice and worked!).

However following to see what others wear other than jeans.

Gervhill · 17/09/2025 06:36

I second the Levi’s 94 Baggy. Perfect for casual wear.

saltykisses · 17/09/2025 06:37

Ive lost loads of weight this year, I have wide leg, mom, carrot and straight leg jeans.

Britpopbaby · 17/09/2025 07:57

Girlfriend? My Boden ones narrow at the ankle so could be a good compromise. I have relegated them to my walking jeans as they are perfect for my walking boots for that reason.

TootlingTia · 17/09/2025 08:16

@Gervhill, @morellamalessdrama … could they be worn with a low heeled ankle boot? Want to put my trainers away for winter and am also struggling with what to buy!

Gervhill · 17/09/2025 08:21

Possibly, I haven’t tried that personally but you would probably want the 32inch length at least. I’m a 31.5 inside leg and when I sit down in the 32s there is a bit of leg on show.

Diggetydawg · 17/09/2025 08:25

Straight Jeans ? I have those Levis and they're a nice shape. Levis are also good as you can get in between sizes, so a 31 waist would be in between a 12 and 14.

TizerorFizz · 17/09/2025 08:30

M&S do every shape possible. I like wide leg or straight. Various types of denim and cut. Just order some and try them on at home. At the moment I mostly wear dark wash wide legs (Autograph) but wore light blue and off white in the summer. As they aren’t expensive, various pairs are possible!

lifetheuniverseandeverything42 · 17/09/2025 08:38

Abercrombie do a curve fit in most their jeans which are suitable for smaller waist larger hips. Curve isn’t plus size it’s just cut for different proportions. I would probably go with girlfriend style or just straight.

ItsFineReally · 17/09/2025 08:49

Set aside some time and just try on as many styles and shapes as you can. Take the shoes you'll wear most often with them; don't just rely on how you look in them in the changing rooms with bare feet. Take photos.

You might have to try a few shops. As PP mentioned, you could start in Next or M&S where they have lots of different shapes. Department stores like Selfridges or John Lewis. Or even specialist jean shops.

OldieButBaddie · 17/09/2025 10:56

I cannot get on with high waisted jeans at all, as long as they are low to mid rise they are fine as they conceal the c-section overhang thing rather than exacerbating it. I had a revelation with denim shorts this year from Hollister which were wide legged and lower waist, now I have tried their jeans and they are also great, I look like Tweedledum in high waisted ones.

I would suggest if you are short with an overhang try different rises and you will be surprised what a difference it makes. I also have so lovely skinny flares from 7 for all mankind which are a lower waist and look great, tried the high waisted and looked awful

ETA I have tried all M&S ones and they are all high waisted and look dreadful

babyboy520 · 17/09/2025 11:59

Maybe a loose skirt would be more suitable for you, and it would be more comfortable to wear.

TizerorFizz · 17/09/2025 12:24

I’m definitely one with a tum and high rise keeps it in check. Otherwise it’s a beer gut!

supergraphicultramoderngirllikeme · 17/09/2025 12:39

I can’t bear high rise! They make me look so much fatter round the middle. Too many jeans are high rise now, it drives me mad (& I’m tall with a long body, god only knows how short people find it) - bring back more low rise options.

Clarinet1 · 17/09/2025 13:04

Also, it depends what you’re going to wear on your top half - if you go for hip-skimming shirts and smock tops you may suit a different style of jeans to what might work with a cropped length T shirt or a tucked-in shirt so maybe take a couple of your favourite tops with you when shopping.

BernardButlersBra · 17/09/2025 13:11

I am a similar body shape (including the c-section overhang thanks to my twins!). I am a convert to Next these days, the mid-rise works well and keeps things in check but is not too high. Last pair l got was mid rise crop which is a good fit and is straight in style so a compromise between skinny and wider ones? I tried with M&S but the fit isn't that great for me

UpMyself · 17/09/2025 13:35

Wear your skinnies with long boots. That's what I'll be doing.
the baggy/mom/barrel/wide styles look silly on me.
I'll wear straight ones with ankle boots (and bootcuts with heels occasionally).

CherryogDog · 17/09/2025 13:39

I'm a convert to Next jeans, mid rise fit lovely. I'm small waisted but plenty of belly rolls.
I used to wear M&S jeans, but couldn't find any that weren't mega high rise, I could ditch my bra and tuck my tits in them.

lifetheuniverseandeverything42 · 17/09/2025 13:43

@supergraphicultramoderngirllikeme @OldieButBaddie I can’t get on with high rise either. I just look all belly and no torso in them. And they dig in to me when I sit down. Give me a mid-rise any day.

TattooStan · 17/09/2025 14:02

My jeans collection includes some classic Levis 501s (bought new last year) and they are perfect. They're not slim fit or wide fit, they're somewhere in the middle. They fit a curvier bum. They are made of proper demin, so have structural integrity and dont go saggy. You can dress them up or down. They aren't in or out of fashion and will never date.
I buy them in a 26inch leg as I'm 5ft4, which means they sit perfectly just above my ankle bone and look slightly cropped.

YouCouldFallOutWithYourselfInAnEmptyRoom · 17/09/2025 15:55

@morellamalessdrama @Gervhill where do you measure on your body for the waist measurement to be the correct size? Those jeans Look nice but where my actual waist is, and where they look like they sit, are totally different so I don’t know how to pick a size.
thank you

Gervhill · 17/09/2025 16:47

All I can say is that my waist is 27.5 but the jeans size for these ones is 25 for me. I’ve no idea how they work it out.

SuburbanCrofter · 17/09/2025 16:54

501s here too. I wear them with flat ankle boots in winter. I got these www.levi.com/GB/en_GB/clothing/women/jeans/501-crop-jeans/p/362000224

lindyloo57 · 17/09/2025 17:05

I struggle with jeans, the only new shape that suit me is wide leg but not too wide, my skinnies all feel to tight and look and feel uncomfortable, today received a online order with marks, I ordered the slim high waist cropped £32.50 , now on me they are not high waisted great, as I prefer mid rise, and not as slim as skinnies I have skinnie legs, I do quite like them on me they are a new shape but, I ordered the short as I am only 5ft2 but they come 3 inches above my ankle bone and feel to short, I will go in store and try the medium length have a feeling they could be to long.
