Cheap raincoat for walking the dog that doesn’t look shit?

Koulibiak · 05/09/2025 22:00

I need a new raincoat. It must have pockets and a hood, and cover my bum, but doesn’t need to go knee length.

Everything I see gives off a vibe of “I’m hiking the Adirondacks trail then making it to Everest base camp”. I’m not going on an expedition. I just need something simple and not overly trek-ish. Please help. 🙏

They aren’t cheap but I got one a couple of years ago after a recommendation on this site and it lasts and lasts. Great for dog walking and town. https://www.protected-species.com/

Protected Species: Smart waterproof jacket

Protected Species make some of the finest raincoats. Waterproof, windproof and completely breathable, smart waterproof jackets.

I'd be really careful with some of these links and suggestions op. There's a huge difference between waterproof and 'showerproof' or 'water resistant' and the like.

A couple of the coats linked on here wouldn't protect you from a dripping tap let alone a great British downpour 😂

I always go regatta for waterproof options, with a high waterproof and high breathability rating.

This is good - 100% waterproof & nice on. V good value at £36 - tuclothing.sainsburys.co.uk/product/tuc146030608?clickSR=slp:term:rubberised%20raincoat:1:14:1

In the questions, it says it’s showerproof, not waterproof.

CoubousAndTourmaIet · 10/09/2025 09:13

I'd recommend Seasalt Plant Hunter. At full price it isn't cheap, but they often crop up on Ebay, new but half price. Likewise Seasalt Janelle.
I also have a Lighthouse waterproof coat, it was cheaper but is not breathable. It's okay for a quick 5 minutes around the block, but for longer walks the Seasalt coats are far superior.

My word of advice is if buying secondhand, make sure that it’s a rubbery sort of waterproof (like a traditional raincoat, reputable brand so you know the seams are properly done) or that it’s in excellent/like new condition. Some people don’t care for their waterproof stuff, or don’t know about the types of fabric, and end up washing/damaging the coating that stops the rain soaking through technical fabrics. You can buy stuff to help re-proof the clothing but I’m not sure how well it works myself.

I was just about to say the same thing. I bought a Seasalt coat on Vinted that must have been washed a few times and so wasn't waterproof at all! I tried to use the wash in stuff but it definitely isn't as waterproof as it should be. I had another one id bought brand new years ago and that was excellent.

I've recently lost my wonderful dog, but found the autumn/winter walks a problem.

I bought many hooded raincoats but and the best one turned out to tincloth from Seasalt. Light padding in the body and the hood, double zip and poppers, adjustable cuffs. I got it in the sale at £80 ten years ago, it still looks new, I recommend it highly.

Salome61 · 10/09/2025 15:04

I can't edit my post - it is called Plant Hunter 2, comes in various colours.

Bloozie · 10/09/2025 19:00

I just got this from TK Maxx, though they don't have many sizes left online:

My criteria were the same as yours - a dog walking coat to cover my bum. This isn't very thick though as I have a padded Seasalt coat for colder winter days. I just wanted something for Autumn.

I got a cheap Barbour wax jacket from Vinted. Resealed it and it looks great. I bought it last autumn, wore it all winter and it's ready to go again this year..

How did you reseal it??

Lorrymum · 10/09/2025 19:32

Another vote for Seasalt. I bought a longer length coat which protects my legs. I found some shorter jackets produced a continuous stream of rain water which totally soaked my jeans.

Moonlightfrog · 11/09/2025 09:45

I have a Regatta rain coat that I have had for years, it’s kept me pretty dry. I layer up under it. I also have a North face rain coat which is pretty much the same but more expensive.

henlake7 · 11/09/2025 10:25

I caved and bought a Regatta dryrobe BNWT off Vinted.
I know the OP specified 'doesnt look like shit' but when its peeing down the last thing I care about is how I look, I just want to be dry!😄

Trespass Audrey. The fur is removable and then it's just a coat, rather than a full on Oasis parka. £40, loads of colours. Mine is green.

I like this. However, , my dh says I haven’t many winter coats already, and I already have a padded chat in similar to this.

dagoo · 11/09/2025 15:47

You need the Sainsbury's Tu rip off of a Rains coat. Navy, rubber. It's brilliant.

TokyoSushi · 11/09/2025 15:50

Rina66 · 07/09/2025 20:03

Saw this in Tescos today, I think I’m going to go back for it https://www.tesco.com/groceries/en-GB/products/321311337

@Rina66 Just in case you haven't gone back, go back and GET THIS!!!! I got the leopard print one on sale and it's the warmest, driest thing ever!

Admittedly mine is quite garish (probably why it was reduced) but I've actually had loads of compliments on it (I use it for the kids football)

TokyoSushi · 11/09/2025 15:51

I also have a Seasalt Janelle, definitely worth seeing if there are any on Vinted.

Picoloangel · 11/09/2025 20:37

Cocoaone · 07/09/2025 20:12

I love my seasalt Janelle. Very expensive at £180 brand new, but I just managed to get another one second hand one from Vinted for £30 and it’s near perfect - just the older style.

I second this. I love mine. I bought it in a sale and it was still expensive but it’s like being hugged in the rain!

ladygindiva · 11/09/2025 21:09

MimiSunshine · 09/09/2025 19:47

Is the hood a generous size? I find that hoods don’t cover enough if my head to keep me dry on women’s coats.
they seem to stop just slightly before my hair line and I get a wet face.

My Orla Kiley regatta raincoat has a very sufficient hood. I've experienced what you're saying with previous coats so it's one of the first things I check 🤣

Lauralou19 · 11/09/2025 21:25

Sorry might have already been suggested buy Regatta Otilie - paid £30 brand new online from Regatta not long ago and had so many compliments. Had loads of people asking where its from.

Also own a few Regatta Bayletta jackets in various colours. They have sales all the time so just buy them when on offer!

Also love Joules but not very often on sale so i’d try vinted or smaller independent suppliers who might have them on offer?

This, keep your eye out and you can find a bargain. The mens styles can be a bit cheaper for some reason.

Or, the Seafaring jacket in the khaki from Seasalt is quite nice and currently discounted, I'm not a fan of Seasalt at all usually but I don't mind this jacket and apparently is actually waterproof. Possibly the holy grail.

GimmieABreakOr3 · 11/09/2025 21:46

I’d recommend Colombia, Rains, Rab, Patagonia, Varley

tothelefttotheleft · 11/09/2025 22:37

@Reginaphalangeeeee

Nancy Birtwhistle showed how to do this on instagram this week.
